FATE OF THE FURIOUS Director F. Gary Gray To Launch A Big Screen M.A.S.K. Franchise For Hasbro

It's been revealed today that the director of the upcoming Men in Black reboot F. Gary Gray is now looking to bring Hasbro's M.A.S.K. to the big screen. Hit the jump for everything we know so far...

With the Transformers Universe off to a rocky start, Paramount Pictures is now looking at other Hasbro franchises to bring to the big screen. According to Deadline, the latest is M.A.S.K., a movie based on the 1980s action figures and animated series. The Fate of the Furious director F. Gary Gray has been tasked with adapting the project presumably once he's finished working on the Men in Black reboot.

As the trade notes, "M.A.S.K. is an acronym for Mobile Armored Strike Kommand, a task force led by Matt Trakker whose goal is to take out the criminal organization VENOM." Apparently, Gray, Paramount, and Hasbro are now looking for a writer who will deliver a "contemporary subculture movie with a youth empowerment angle." Well, that all sounds rather topical, don't you think?

What led to Gray deciding to take on the project? Apparently, he's interested in taking a vintage property and revamping it for a contemporary audience. With that in mind, we should probably expect to see a young, diverse cast and that's no bad thing in today's Hollywood landscape. What do you guys think of this news? Are you interested in

Interesting project to take on. I’m surprised but anything can be great and he’s definitely someone capable of making something great.

Don't know much about M.A.S.K. but remember watching Friday in Secondary School, at the end of the school year when Teachers let you watch films in the last week. This was before the films had to be educational. I'm also sure some random kid bought it in, but Teachers were pretty chilled out then.

I don't remember anyone watching that one as a kid.

M.A.S.K. was so dope. I remember playing at my cousin’s house with all his vehicles. I had a few, but he’d get all the new ones almost immediately. I think my favorite was Raven. Rhino was was cool too. My kids play with my old toys now, though some are incomplete or broken.
ChangAlang
ChangAlang - 4/19/2018, 4:28 AM
@AgeofApocalypse - I bet even though incomplete theyre still better than some of the crapfest toys they mass produce these days.

I kind of wish I hadn’t given away my gen1 Soundwave with Laserbeak, Rumble, Ravage and Ratbag.

"contemporary subculture movie with a youth empowerment angle." Hmmmmm, not sure how i feel about this... stick to the source material dude. And his Furious movie is the weakest link since #4....i'm not really excited for this at all

HELL YEAH FOR A MASK MOVIE! Then read the part that said they are going for a "Youth empowerment angle", which roughly translated in todays terms means "Adult has-beens get replaced with annoying teenagers" to appeal to a younger audience instead of us 30/40 something adults that are still clinging desperately on to the 80's and would actually WANT and CARE for this movie. I'm already out!

As long as they don't muck it up like they did with GI Joe...

"With the Transformers Universe off to a rocky start..." Yeah, they suck but I wouldn't necessarily call a string of 5 movies "a rocky start."
GarthRanzz
GarthRanzz - 4/19/2018, 5:48 AM
@tylerzero - I know. That statement is so crazy. What's next? With Star Wars on shaky ground, with the Fast and Furious series running on fumes? Last legs marvel?

MASK - man I use to watch that cartoon when I was younger. I highly doubt anyone under the age of 25 even remembers are no anything about this cartoon. If done correctly, a movie version of this would look pretty cool on the big screen.
superbigguy32
superbigguy32 - 4/19/2018, 5:35 AM
I know they’ll try to make it like Fast and the Furious, because of the cars.
Capfan82
Capfan82 - 4/19/2018, 7:27 AM
@superbigguy32 - this would be the only time i would be ok with that. those vehicles can do crazy things. just like the unbelieveable things in the fast and the furious. mix fast and the furious with a marvel movie and there you go.
BIGBMH
BIGBMH - 4/19/2018, 5:55 AM
Not familiar with this franchise. I was born in 91 and I don't think this was one of those series whose popularity carried forward into my era (unlike TMNT for example).

I don't want to be too judgmental of source material I've never watched, but my gut is telling me that this will be a flop. I don't see this as the type of franchise someone greenlit out of real belief in its story potential. It seems like a meeting of "Hmm. What else can we give the Transformers treatment?"
Thanoswasright
Thanoswasright - 4/19/2018, 6:20 AM
@BIGBMH - Overall the cartoon was crap anyway and didn't make it pass a second season. So you're not missing anything.

MASK? Seriously? ........I mean come on!

Have people not seen Paramount's overall track record the last 2 and half years??? Even their prize pony (bayformers) flopped last year.

Between Bayformers, Turtles, GI Joe and Battleship how many more childhood memories do moviegoers need shattered.....?

I'll pass!

Had all the Toys... even Boulder Dash Mountain...

Aaron Eckhart would be the perfect Matt Tracker !! :)
Thanoswasright
Thanoswasright - 4/19/2018, 10:16 AM
@FCSnakeEye - The crap IDW comic crossover they forced into Transformers has made Matt Tracker black.

But don't be surprised if Hollywood makes Matt an Asian woman.

Not watching it regardless.
