Peter Dinklage frequently stole the show in Game of Thrones, and it feels like it's been far too long since we last saw him in a leading role. The actor has a lot of big projects on the horizon, though, including taking on the title role in Macon Blair's upcoming reboot of The Toxic Avenger.
Jacob Tremblay, Taylour Paige, Kevin Bacon, Julia Davis, and Elijah Wood have also been cast in the movie which tells the story of a struggling everyman who is pushed into a vat of toxic waste and transformed into a mutant freak. From there, he must go from shunned outcast to underdog hero as he races to save his son, his friends and his community from the forces of corruption and greed.
Talking to Empire Online, Dinklage promised that this remake of the 1984 cult classic has been "a lot of fun" to make. "I just wanted to do something that I’ve never done before. So why not be a monster in an over-the-top, crazy movie, and why not sing in another one?" he said, referring to his role in Joe Wright's upcoming musical Cyrano.
Asked if this take will be just as bonkers as the original, Dinklage responded with, "Yes. It’s not a remake. I just like guerrilla filmmaking. Those movies – they just made them, no matter what. They just did it because they love doing it. Some of them are not the best, but some are so much fun. When you make movies too clean, it can distance the audience. They want to feel the dirt under their fingernails. I think those Troma films definitely dipped the audience in toxic waste."
This feels like one of those movies that could go one of two ways, but we're definitely excited to see what Dinklage brings to the table in The Toxic Avenger.
Production wrapped a while ago, but we don't have a specific release date beyond sometime in 2022.
