Reports are coming in that Sir Roger Moore has passed away at age 89. The star's children announced the sad news over Twitter, confirming that their father died in Switzerland "after a short but brave battle with cancer”.

The legendary actor was best known for playing the third and longest running incarnation of 007 in the James Bond franchise, and will remain the most popular version of that iconic character for an entire generation.

Before taking over as Bond from Sean Connery, Moore made his name starring in TV shows The Saint and The Persuaders. He also devoted a lot of his time to humanitarian work, becoming a Unicef goodwill ambassador in 1991.

Moore is survived by his wife, Kristina Tholstrup, and three children.
