Juan Carlos Fresnadillo Front Runner To Helm Highlander Reboot

The director attached to the new version of The Crow is also Summit Entertainment's first choice for another reboot; the classic sci-fi/fantasy Highlander..

Deadline report that Spanish director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, in Toronto to promote his latest movie Intruders starring Clive Owen, is Summit's pick to direct their relaunch of the popular Highlander series.

Fresnadillo is now in discussions to direct a film that Summit will co-finance with RCR Media Group. Fresnadillo is also attached to direct a reboot of The Crow, which has Bradley Cooper attached.

The original Highlander starred Christopher Lambert and Sean Connery and was an exciting mix of sci-fi and medieval fantasy. Although flawed, it remains something of a cult favorite. It's numerous sequels were pretty awful although the tv series starring Adrian Paul wasn't half bad. Deadline also report that this new script by Iron Man writers Art Marcum and Matt Holloway takes the story back to the original film's mythology and is by all accounts impressing all that have read it. The coveted directing spot apparently opened up when Justin Lin left the project to focus on the new Fast And Furious flick.

Personally I'm kind of sick of all things Highlander. The tale of immortals competing for the ultimate prize has been done to death at this stage. I'll keep an eye on casting etc but I'm not particularly looking forward to this one. What do you guys think?

I love this series; the first movie was good, 2nd was terrible, 3rd was entertaining at least, and I won't mention any after the 3rd with the hopes the rest of the world is also pretending they don't exist. The TV series totally trashed the movie's storyline while trying to force a tie-in, but it did bring some pretty neat things into the lore too (like The Watchers). Either way, I'm down for this, but I'd rather have it explain a second Gathering with new immortals popping up around the world instead of trying to reboot it as a whole. You can't reboot greatness!

@ComicBookGoth - I agree, it is completely, 100% insane the uncanny similarities between Christopher Lambert and Thomas Jane. I remember the first time I saw Jane when The Punisher stuff was coming out and the first thing I thought was that he looked like Connor MacLeod.

this could be really good. if they make it more modern day and dig more in the folklore of it all.

James Purefoy, Michael Fassbender or Thomas Jane as Connor
Kevin Durand, Ray Stevenson, Luke Goss or Mads Mikkelsen as The Kurgan
Antonio Banderas as Ramirez

I would like to see Connor have a apprentice, someone he can train....then dies....not like they killed him in those bad sequels.

Everything past the first film was crap. Conner won the prize and that's why the new story revolves around him. Duncan, while interesting, did not live up to the majesty or history of the first film.

Thomas Jane and Christopher Lambert could be brothers from another mother!!! I agree, let this dog die.

Loved the first movie and the TV show.

Duncan McLeod had great swordfight scenes and the episodes set in Scotland and France were the best.

No more HIGHLANDER is needed.

KNIGHT3000: same here, i had a passing interest of Highlander due to the QUEEN music. But then "Endgame" reached teathers and I decided to watch the entire series over the years.

"The Source" could´ve been better with another director, but it´s cheap budget would be more suited to the 1980´s.
But to it´s credit, Thekla Reuten was beautiful under the moonlight.

New music, new themes, new actors, new revelations of the past, ...maybe Highlander will appeal to the new audience. That 'never knew what you had after it's gone' theme was very prominent in the 1985 movie and ran throughtout the tv series. I like to know what the writers and the movie would do with that theme.

Loved the series. Saw all the tv shows and movies. It had it's ups and downs. I'll wait and see if new, fresh ideas and creative minds can make new magic with this franchise.

The first one is one of my favorite movies. Conner is the true one the Director's Cut is best. You can't say it was Duncan in the end because each movie and including the show is almost like alternate universes. Hell when the tv show first aired and through out the entire series I saw it as a prequel to the first film.
