According to The Hollywood Reporter, Amazon MGM Studios is moving forward with a sequel to Samaritan. The 2022 superhero movie was released on Prime Video last August and starred action legend Sylvester Stallone (The Expendables) as a superhero who vanished from the public eye 20 years earlier after battling his nemesis.
The movie hit a lot of familiar beats and wasn't particularly well-received by critics (it has a 38% score on Rotten Tomatoes), but there was a last-minute twist which, while a tad predictable, makes Samaritan worth a watch.
The trade goes on to confirm the streamer has tapped Bragi F. Schut to pen the sequel after he previously penned the first instalment.
Stallone will produce the project and is set to reprise the title role (in a deal that was finalised before the SAG-AFTRA strike). Back to Schut, though, and he previously penned Escape Room, The Last Voyage of the Demeter, and a Dungeons & Dragons TV pilot for eOne and Hasbro.
Samaritan must have found an audience on Prime Video and, given its grounded tone, we're guessing the sequel can probably be made for an amount which makes it a good fit for a streaming debut. We doubt it will be released in theaters, though there's a chance the studio is considering a limited run in multiplexes.
As you might expect, Samaritan 2 doesn't currently have a confirmed production start date or release date.
In Samaritan, thirteen-year-old Sam Cleary (Javon "Wanna" Walton) suspects that his mysterious and reclusive neighbour Mr. Smith (Sylvester Stallone) is actually a legend hiding in plain sight.
Twenty years ago, Granite City's super-powered vigilante, Samaritan, was reported dead after a fiery warehouse battle with his rival, Nemesis. Most believe Samaritan perished in the fire, but some in the city, like Sam, have hope that he is still alive. With crime on the rise and the city on the brink of chaos, Sam makes it his mission to coax his neighbour out of hiding to save the city from ruin.
Directed by Julius Avery from a script by Bragi F. Schut, Samaritan also stars Pilou Asbæk, Dascha Polanco, and Moises Arias. The movie is currently available to watch on Prime Video.
