Robert Eggers fans have been anxiously awaiting a first look at the acclaimed director's next project ever since the release of The Lighthouse, and Focus Features finally unveiled a first look at The Northman late last year. Now, Total Film has shared the covers for this month's issue, featuring stars Alexander Skarsgård and Anya-Taylor Joy.

Set in Iceland at the turn of the 10th century, Skarsgård plays the Viking prince Amleth, who witnesses his father's (Ethan Hawke) murder at the hands of his own brother (Claes Bang) as a child and vows vengeance. He returns as an adult alongside a fellow warrior (Taylor-Joy), and begins his bloody campaign to rescue his mother Queen Gudrun (Nicole Kidman) and claim his birthright.

We've seen very similar stories play out countless times over the years, but in the hands of a filmmaker like Eggers, The Northman promises to subvert expectations and should prove to be a unique viewing experience at the very least.

Check out the covers below along with the trailer, and let us know if you're looking forward to this one in the comments.

The Northman also stars Willem Dafoe, Björk, Murray McArthur, Ian Gerard Whyte, Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson, and Kate Dickie. The movie is set to hit theatres on April 22, 2022.

For me personally; 'The Witch' quickly became one of my Top-10 favorite horror flicks.

'The Lighthouse' was appropriately bizarre (like a dark, twisted fever-dream) but, I have zero interest to ever re-visit it.

I'm even less enthused about 'The Northman' but, if this FINALLY makes the much rumored 'Nosferatu' remake as Egger's next project, then, I'm all for it's premiere and to get it the hell out of the way so that Count Orlok/Dracula can creep on the big-screen once more!

Looks interesting. This reminds a bit of that Berserk movie Mel Gibson was developing before his scandals.

@regularmovieguy - For sure. Still think this guy is underrated, and Taylor Joy has been crushing it lately.

I'm most excited to see Bjork acting again. I hope its not a tiny sequence.

@RegularPoochie - I hear you, but it would be short sighted to think Russia as a whole is the problem. It's their incompetent and insane leader. I genuinely think he's worse than Hitler. In 2022 with the advances we've had as a human race, he's still stuck. We need some good assassins. If only John wick was real!

@UnderBelly - we have too. I'm from Finland and this situation is crazy, the mofos comes here next.

@RegularPoochie - Fair enough, and I understand Finland has quite the history with Russia. But the general Russian population seems to be against what's going on. The same ones who are protesting, getting arrested and muzzled in the their streets. The whole regime is f'ed up.

Like I said to Finnish dude though, if Putin goes there next he'll start WW3. Finland being part of EU and a NATO partner will be defended by the rest of the west.

It will be expensive but the principle will remain.

Praying for you though. I love Finland. Pori is a nice place.

@UnderBelly - well in Russia everyone is againts this war. From public to ministers etc.

Edit: yes, because we have agreement with NATO. Still we are not in NATO, but that might change soon

@RegularPoochie - Yeah, that was my point, Russia as a whole isn't the problem. It's corruption and insanity that Putin surrounds himself with.

I been checking some of the videos out online. the young guys throwing their lives away are scared. Imagine what pressure they must be under to follow through on an unwarranted invasion. The government has got to be holding a gun to their families heads or something.

@RegularPoochie - Yeah, they have a partnership, but also their stance within the EU is good.

I don't think a Finnish invasion will happen, but yeah, we're living in uncertain times. Hope it doesn't reach your side and I hope Ukraine survives this.

Their president is already a legend. I pray they don't capture him.

@Stinkor1 - Haha fair enough, but with with some posters like badoptics and Tyrant with their logic it's sometimes hard to tell when someone is actually ignorant or joking. My bad.

Really excited for this, I’m all about Vikings at the moment after watching the Valhalla spinoff on Netflix. Really [frick]ing good.

But what I really wanna see is this guy’s take on Nosferatu. Perfect director for it.
