Focus Features has finally unveiled a first look at Robert Eggers' The Northman, which features Alexander Skarsgård in the lead along with an all-star supporting cast which includes Anya-Taylor Joy, Nicole Kidman, Willem Dafoe, and Ethan Hawke.

Set in Iceland at the turn of the 10th century, Skarsgård plays the Viking prince Amleth, who witnesses his father's (Hawke) murder at the hands of his own brother (Claes Bang) as a child and vows vengeance. He returns as an adult alongside a fellow warrior played by Anya-Taylor Joy, and begins his bloody campaign to rescue his mother Queen Gudrun (Kidman) and claim his birthright.

Truth be told, we've seen very similar stories play out countless times over the years, but in the hands of a filmmaker like Eggers (The Witch, The Lighthouse), The Northman promises to subvert expectations and should prove to be a unique viewing experience at the very least!

Check out the trailer below along with a poster, and let us know what you think.

The Northman also stars Björk, Murray McArthur, Ian Gerard Whyte, Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson, and Kate Dickie. The movie is set to hit theaters on April 22, 2022.

This looks so [frick]ing rad. You could also just do actual Hamlet with this same cast. But whatever, let's do whatever this thing is.

Dear God please just drive a truck load of money up to Robert Eggers' house and have him do Conan The Barbarian.

@BobGarlen - That's a great idea.
I'm a little apprehensive about Netflix making a Conan series...could be good, but could be terrible too. The Conan IP might not survive in film medium if it suffers another bomb.

@mdwilliamson24 - if you have a filmmaker like Eggers attached you would get enough interest to really make an audience want to see it. Conan is on thin ice and it needs some kind of resurrection, Seeing the trailer alone for this gives me a lot of faith that Eggers could get the tone of REH's stories and bring that brutality and a feeling of realism so that those mystical or supernatural elements stick out in a much more frightening way.

@Waddles - No thanks, not unless he's doing the mythology and not the Marvel version. If I were to give him something outside of Conan, it would be God of War. That would be another property he would be absolutely perfect for.

He's the one that should be playing Adam Warlock.

Didn’t see the VVitch (I don’t really do horror) but I saw the lighthouse. If Eggers can translate his keen and thoughtful eye to what looks like a slick action-y film, this’ll really be special

@oldnoname - I think i'm one of the few that just didn't like Witch.

Acting was GREAT but the movie as a whole did nothing for me. I really want to watch The Lighthouse though, but my procrastinating ass keeps pushing it back.

@Menks123 - I started Lighthouse on a plane and had to restart when i got home. I don't think my eyebrows unfurrowed once

@oldnoname - It just looks absolutely weird and crazy, which I love lmao. I am going to try and watch it after I finish Witcher.

After History's Vikings, The Last Kingdom, and AC: Valhalla (terrible game), I really should be all viking'd out, but I'm more than likely gonna watch this.

They need to get Claes Bang for Dr. Doom before he gets older. Get with it Marvel!

Looks pretty cool. Although I wish studios would hire actors who can speak the native language for this kind of movies if possible.

After the higher exposure of international cinema in the last couple of years, hearing English in a non-English setting makes it feel a little less authentic.

With the Last Duel for example, hearing the pronounciation of some French names took me out of the movie for a few seconds on multiple occasions.
