TRAP: First Trailer For M. Night Shyamalan's New Movie Gives The Big Twist Away... Or Does It?

Warner Bros. has released the first trailer for M. Night Shyamalan's new movie, Trap, which stars Josh Hartnett (Sin City, Halloween H20) as a serial killer cornered by the cops while attending a concert with his daughter.

All the brief synopsis tells us is that "a father and teen daughter attend a pop concert, where they realize they’re at the center of a dark and sinister event," but the teaser gives away a lot more.

Noticing a large police presence in and around the venue, Hartnett's character persuades a vendor to tell him what's going on, and finds out that the cops have been tipped off that a notorious serial killer known as The Butcher will be attending the concert.

Hartnett then goes to the bathroom to check his home security system, and we see that he has a man tied up in a chair screaming for help.

So, it seems he is the Butcher. Surely a twist that should have been kept out of the marketing? Shyamalan explains why he decided to give the game away right off the bat.

“When I thought of the idea. I was like, Why? You can’t hide it. It happens so early,” the filmmaker tells The Wrap. “This is the fun of the movie. It’s being in that point-of-view.”

This being a Shyamalan movie, we can't see this trailer giving everything away, and there's a lot of speculation that the film will include at least one more twist.

Shyamalan went on to explain how the music industry was a partial inspiration for the movie.

“We were talking about the form of music, and what tried to happen with the movie industry, which was, hey, just release everything ubiquitously everywhere and everyone can watch it whenever they want. That’s the future right? I said, ‘That’s not the f*cking future. That’s not the way we’re doing this.’ And I tried hard not to do and help everybody and say, ‘Don’t do that.’ But the music industry went that way, and I was like, ‘In what field do you do your work, and then give it away for free? What world is that?’”

Check out the trailer below, and let us know what you think.

Written and directed by M. Night Shyamalan, Trap stars Josh Hartnett, Ariel Donoghue, Saleka Shyamalan, Hayley Mills and Allison Pill. The film is produced by Ashwin Rajan, Marc Bienstock and M. Night Shyamalan. The executive producer is Steven Schneider. The director of photography is Sayombhu Mukdeeprom (Call Me by Your Name). The production designer is Debbie de Villa (The Hating Game). It is edited by Noëmi Preiswerk and the music is by Herdĭs Stefănsdŏttir (Knock at the Cabin). The music supervisor is Susan Jacobs (Old); the costume designer is Caroline Duncan (Old). The casting is by Douglas Aibel (Asteroid City).

Warner Bros. Pictures Presents A Blinding Edge Pictures Production, An M. Night Shyamalan Film: Trap. The film will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures. Trap will be released on 9th August 2024 by Warner Bros. Pictures

MNS has a terrific visual style, but a consistently good writer he is not. I think he could have gone down as one of the greats if he’d gone the Spielberg-ian route of directing more genre-diverse movies while leaving the writing to others.

@NoAssemblyReqd - I quite liked his writing on The Village. To me that's a much better movie than signs. I felt Signs writing and plots wqs just convenient. It was more about how many jumps can he get out of the audience.

@TheVandalore - I will never understand why people are watching reaction videos like this. This is so weird.

@TheVandalore - Knowing M Night, if the trailers show us who the killer is, there is more to it. Or is he the killer? [frick]ing hell, I love the suspense. That's M Night for you

@Usernametaken - Lack of validation, when they see others getting "hyped" or pissed for the things they feel similar about, they feel validated.

@Usernametaken - I was one of those kids who enjoyed seeing my friends reactions to new songs I found or anime I discovered or video game cinematics I unlocked. I was always enjoying sharing things I loved almost as much as enjoying it myself. That extended to movies and TV shows and stuff of that nature. Now that I'm older and not focusing my time on going out and socializing all the time but instead working a lot and saving money, I've found watching some of my favorite YouTubers react to things I'm interested in gives me short, manageable, enjoyable bits of getting to watch someone I find entertaining react to something I'm also interested in. I can watch this for a few mins, then get back to doing whatever else... Rather than driving to a friend's house to hang out and be like "dude I wanna show you this new trailer..." Instead, I watch a couple funny as people react to a new trailer that just dropped and get that same energy.

@HashTagSwagg - oh yeah... Totally validation fixes... Not, you know, just entertainment. Definitely validation.

😂 Y'all really some tools.

@THEKENDOMAN - yeah there has to be more. But the premise set up in the trailer is compelling, and Josh is giving me some Jack Nicholson vibes.

@IAmAHoot - I appreciate that. Reaction channels are some of the most popular of all and it's because nerds love getting feedback from fellow nerds. It's literally why everyone here goes to the comments to read opinions of others and even vote on if we agree with people.

It's a super weird flex this guy is trying to single out reaction content on a web site dedicated to people's reactions to news 😂

I love everything M Night does, and I know this will be another mother-[frick]ing head twister. I love the trailer too.

M Night is one of the most debatable, underrated directors out there.

This man does make Hollywood stories; he makes stories.

Honestly , I dig it!!.

I was a bit dissapointed that they seem to have given the “twist” away in the trailer but if it happens early on in the film then i can deal with it…

I can then just potentially enjoy this cat & mouse thriller from the POV of the killer which i don’t think i have ever seen before (I could be wrong).

Also I’m glad Hartnett is having a bit of resurgence it seems so hopefully this leads to more high profile roles for him again.
