New TENET Stills Released As Christopher Nolan Promises To Take The Spy Genre Into "New Territory"

Following yesterday's cover reveal, Total Film has unveiled a trio of new promo images for Christopher Nolan's Tenet, as the director discusses his film's ambitious goal to break new ground for its genre.

Warner Bros. recently released a full trailer for Christopher Nolan's Tenet, and while it was careful not to pull back the curtain completely, it did give fans a much better idea of what to expect from the mind-bending plot.

Now, Total Film has shared three new official stills to accompany yesterday's cover reveals. They feature John David Washington as the film's main protagonist (we still don't have a name for him), and Elizabeth Debicki as the mysterious woman who will help him on his mission to prevent World War III.

Nolan also spoke to the mag about his latest project, and it sounds like the filmmaker is hoping to break new ground for the spy film genre.

“It’s a film of great ambition and great scale that takes a genre, namely the spy film, and tries to take it into some new territory, and tries to take the audience on a ride they might not have had before, and might not be expecting."

We were hoping the new trailer would reveal an updated release date for Tenet, but the studio doesn't seem to have made a final decision as to when the movie will hit theaters. As far as we know it is still scheduled for July 17, but that's seen as highly ambitious by analysts, and WB actually removed that date from the film's official Twitter account for the trailer drop, before replacing it shortly after.

We should get an official update fairly soon, but for now you can check out the recent covers below along with the new trailer, and let us know what you think in the comments.

John David Washington is the new Protagonist in Christopher Nolan’s original sci-fi action spectacle “Tenet.” Armed with only one word—Tenet—and fighting for the survival of the entire world, the Protagonist journeys through a twilight world of international espionage on a mission that will unfold in something beyond real time.
Not time travel. Inversion.
The international cast of “Tenet” also includes Robert Pattinson, Elizabeth Debicki, Dimple Kapadia, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Clémence Poésy, with Michael Caine and Kenneth Branagh.
Nolan wrote and directed the film, utilizing a mixture of IMAX® and 70mm film to bring the story to the screen. “Tenet” is produced by Emma Thomas and Nolan. Thomas Hayslip served as executive producer.
