ETERNALS Director Chloé Zhao Isn't Taking The Helm Of Kevin Feige's STAR WARS Movie After All

Earlier this week, it was reported that Eternals helmer Chloé Zhao had been tapped to direct Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige's Star Wars movie, but it looks like the rumor has now been debunked.

Eternals didn't strike a chord with some critics, but it has been a box office hit for Disney and Marvel Studios. Director Chloé Zhao, meanwhile, won an Oscar earlier this year for Nomadland, and is likely to be highly sought after as a filmmaker in Hollywood moving forward. As a result, we weren't exactly shocked by the recent report that she might take the helm of Kevin Feige's Star Wars movie.

Loki Head Writer Michael Waldron has been working on the screenplay, and while little to no details have found their way online about the direction the Marvel Studios boss plans to take this Galaxy Far, Far Away, fans are definitely still excited. Unfortunately, it seems Zhao won't actually be involved.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, "we've been hearing this one all week, but insiders insist that no, Chloé Zhao is not directing Kevin Feige's Star Wars movie, or any Star Wars movie."

This wouldn't be the first time the trades have debunked rumours that ultimately come to fruition (before inevitably running them as their own exclusives), but THR has a great team when it comes to movie scoops, so we're inclined to believe their report is accurate. It's a shame about Zhao, but given the way Eternals wraps up, we'd think a sequel is probably a priority for the director.

We'll see what the future holds in store for Zhao and this highly anticipated Star Wars movie, which some believe will take the place of Rogue Squadron after that was recently pushed from 2023. Either way, it seems this iconic franchise will remain out of theaters and on Disney+ for the time being.

Shame. Star Wars through her lens would be very interesting.

@Fares - Agreed. I think she'd make an utterly stunning looking Star Wars movie.

Good for her if she does it, because she's clearly a fan. Good for her if she doesn't, because 'MCU -> Star Wars' is a downgrade these days. I just hope she's happy with whatever she's doing next.

Oh, and of course I hope she gets to make an Eternals sequel.

I liked Eternals but rather she stays there. Not sure if her style would work with Star Wars.

Perhaps Feige has thought of a better option. He reads the script and he imagines the movie through the lens of another director. No stones should be thrown at the windows of Feige's house. xD

Well she’s pretty much blacklisted in China, so if a movie studio wants a movie to open up there then she’s a non-starter.

Shame if true. She seemed very excited to direct one.

With Michael Waldron as a writer, it's was always an odd combo. Wonder who they'll get instead.

Keep her for Eternals 2 and definitely have her be a big part of the Galactus storyline

Can't be worse than JJ Abrams though.

I enjoyed Eternals but even if you didn't, was the directing really the problem? Michael Waldron is writing the script, I don't see why anyone would have a problem with her directing it
