BOX OFFICE: MOANA Surfs Straight To #1 As DOCTOR STRANGE Nears $200 Million Domestically

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them was no match for Disney's latest animated effort at the Thanksgiving box office, while Marvel's Doctor Strange looks set to hit another benchmark...

Moana opened big this past Wednesday, but after earning an impressive $21.8 million yesterday, the latest release from Disney Animation is on track for a projected five day holiday debut in the $80 million range. That's a great result, and yet another hit for the studio in what has been a great year for them. The Dwayne Johnson led release won't top Frozen's $93.6 million for the second best Thanksgiving opening in history, and for now, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire retains the record.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them did well in its second weekend, earning $18.6 million on Friday for a five day haul of around $65 million. As a result, it's safe at #2 and now set to reach $350 million worldwide by Monday. That's more than enough to justify at least one of those four sequels!

The rest of this weekend's new releases have done fairly well, but none of them proved to be a match for Moana and Fantastic Beasts. Doctor Strange meanwhile also had a good few days, as an additional $5.4 million on Friday means that it's now made £197.2 million domestically and is set to cross the $200 million mark today. We'll hopefully have an update and its worldwide cume for you pretty soon.

Loved Strange, 2nd favorite movie of the year so far. Really want to see Moana, but always wait a few weeks for animated movies.....too many screaming kids and shit.

@RancidBane - Yeah was really interested in seeing Kubo. Might go out and rent it for sure, I missed it at the theater sadly.

@RancidBane - I honestly feel that Kubo is extremely overrated. The movie was good but had a lot of flaws imo. I still prefer Paranormal over it. Hell, this year I felt Zootopia was a better film than Kubo.
