GUNDAM: Legendary Debuts A First Look At Jordan Vogt-Roberts' Live-Action Anime Adaptation

We found out earlier this year that Kong: Skull Island director Jordan Vogt-Roberts was set to helm a live-action Gundam movie for Netflix, and Legendary has now debuted a first-look image.

We first learned that a live-action Mobile Suit Gundam movie was in development back in 2018 during the Anime Expo, and earlier this year, we finally got an update on the project when it was announced that Jordan Vogt-Roberts (Kong: Skull Island) would direct the project for Netflix.

Now, Legendary has shared a first look at the anime adaptation in the form of some official concept art featuring the classic RX-78-2 robot suit engulfed in flames.

Gundam, which is generally credited with popularizing the giant robot genre all the way back in 1979, is set in the Universal Century, "an era in which people have emigrated to space colonies because of a growing population on Earth. Eventually, the people living in the colonies seek their autonomy and launch a war of independence against the people on Earth. Battles are fought by piloting robots known as mobile suits."

Legendary Pictures will partner with Sunrise to produce the adaptation, which has Brian K. Vaughan (Y: The Last Man, Saga) on board as screenwriter. Vaughan will also executive produce along with Cale Boyter, who will oversee the project on behalf of Legendary and Sunrise.

Legendary already has the Pacific Rim franchise, but with no word on a third movie, it looks like the studio may have moved on and would rather take a crack at the classic Mech anime series that directly inspired those giant robot/monster mashes.

No release or production start date for Gundam has been announced.

Cool is just the English word for Gundam.

@MrDandy - There's two types of Gundam. The serious depressing drama and the over the top silly. Fighting for freedom, fighting for toy bragging rights. Avenging loved ones, giant robot windmill.

I know where my preference lies, but the franchise does really cater to all tastes.

@MrDandy - id recommend Gundam wing personally. It's what got me into the franchise, and it more or less covers everything.

There's also g Gundam, which is the most anime thing you will ever see.

Eh I wasn’t a fan of Skull Island tbh, it largely shat on what King Kong is imo and as someone who was a huge fan of the 1933 and 2004 iterations it left me wishing they had just left it alone. Maybe it’s a little bit of retroactive dislike given I thought Godzilla vs Kong was atrocious but I’ll probably skip this unless the trailer is really good

Also this makes me sad Pacific Rim fizzled out with that second movie. The first one was dumb on a lot of levels but the Jaeger vs Kaiju action was awesome and I loved it for what it was

@Ha1frican - I love the first one. The fact it is so big and dumb is just part of its charm

@MrDandy - Yeah exactly, the camp and cliche of it adds to the enjoyment imo. It feels like live action anime for better or worse

Some things don’t translate well into live action and this may be one of them. I hope its good though because I love Gundam.

@Themeparkmovies - Netflix make some good movies
Ha1frican
Ha1frican - 11/9/2021, 7:37 PM
@Themeparkmovies - Yeah their output isn’t great, it’s getting better but it doesn’t instill confidence at this point. The only streaming exclusive movies I trust to have proper production quality is Apple TV and that because they just buy the rights to existing movies most of the time
