Samuel L. Jackson Cast In Spike Lee's OLDBOY; Plus Bruce Hornsby To Score

Spike Lee has added The Avengers star Samuel L. Jackson to the cast of his remake of Chan-wook Park's Oldboy. Also Bruce Hornsby will be scoring the film, that's just the way it is.

Actor Samuel Jackson joins the cast of Spike Lee's remake of Chan-wook Park's ultimate revenge film, Oldboy. The LA Times has learned that Jackson will be playing a small but pivotal role in the film.

Jackson has come on board for a small but critical part in the new film, according to a person close to the production who was not authorized to talk about it publicly. The actor will play the man who is being tortured by the hero (Brolin) in a key revenge scene.

Fans of the original will remember the scene as perhaps the most visceral and disturbing of the film. Protagonist Dae-su Oh exacts vengeance on a man who once guarded him by extracting his teeth one-by-one with the claw end of a hammer.

They go on to say that in Spike Lee's version the torture scene will not include the removal of teeth, but don't worry Jackson's character will still be apart of a torture that is "plenty painful."

Bruce Hornsby will be composing the film. He has worked with Spike Lee in the past on Kobe Doin' Work and Red Hook Summer. The songwriter is perhaps best known for his 80's hit song, "The Way It Is."

Oldboy will be directed by Spike Lee (Inside Man) and star: Josh Brolin (Milk, Men in Black 3), Sharlto Copley (District 9, The A-Team), and actress Elizabeth Olsen (Silent House, Martha Marcy May Marlene).

I'll go see this. At least Will Smith isn't involved anymore.

@Musashi No he isn't going to look like that, it's a photoshopped pic someone did when he was announced for the "Joe" Dae-su role.

Spike Lee is an overrated hack director. I kind of wish a better filmmaker was in the director's chair. But whatever.

Really? A hack? Summer of Sam, Do the Right Thing, and Malcolm X are all solid films. Spike Lee is great at setting certain tones for each of his movies, and I think this is going to be a really cool combination.

ITS'S NOT A FRAKKING REMAKE!!!

Every stupid article that covers this film keeps calling it a remake, it's not! Do some decent journalism for once and do your ground works facts..

1: The original 'Old Boy' is an 8 volume JAPANESE manga comic series. Any film made from that is an "ADAPTATION" not a "REMAKE"!

2: The KOREANS made a film adaptation but made it with NO JAPANESE cast, it was a KOREAN version of the tale! It also largely changed the story to accommodate their own shorter version and also all the names were changed to Korean. For example the main character in the book is called 'Shinichi Gotō' while in the Korean movie he's called 'Oh Dae-su'.

3: The KOREANS also made a slight change tot he title to differentiate it from the manga comic. The Comic is called "Old Boy", two words; while theirs has it as a single word, "Oldboy", no spaces!

4: Spike Lee's version is not a remake of the KOREAN film its a re-adaptation of the original book. This time they want to get more of the original story accurately portrayed but they are still going to change all the names as this is an AMERICAN version of the Manga just as the KOREAN version was a KOREAN version of the same tale.

Those are the facts, stop writing these things up like they're some huge copycat movie from some other directors original work, this is clearly NOT the case. I love the Korean movie but it is not the Manga 100%. If another director wants to give the Manga a shot at the screen then by all rights he deserves a go, even if that director is Spike Lee!

@dgabbor:
Not true. Spike Lee directed "The Inside Man", which is actually quite good.One of the better heist movies in recent history.

He also directed The 25th Hour, which was fantastic.

Thanks for that info @Ceejay. Okay, I'll give this a watch like I gave "Let me in" a watch

Spike is a solid director. Poor choice in basketball teams but a very solid director.

@Ceejay
How many Korean films can you name that aren't directed by Park Chan-Wook?
How many Swedish movies can you list without including the Millennium series or Let the Right One In?

While yes, technically they are still adaptations, it is so obvious that this American remake is being made to capitalize on Park's success. Just like the other ones.

There's a LOT more manga out there to adapt - this is no coincidence.

Spike Lee, Tarintino and Jackson should do a movie

While I don't particularly care for Spike Lee's films, I thoroughly enjoyed "Inside Man"! A VERY well done heist film with a twist. Loved it!

Guys, guys, guys, stop the arguing...you're ALL very pretty! lol

Re-make, re-boot, re-imagining, re-tooled, re-examined...whatever the [frick] they wanna call it, doesn't matter, the original film "Oldboy" was fantastic, haven't read the manga but I'm quite sure it's a good read, I'm sure this'll be good as well, at least watchable. If not, who cares? Really? Will the Earth suddenly explode if it's bad? Probably not. If you're so against it, or Spike Lee for that matter, it's simple. Don't watch it. But...everyone here knows those of you who are SOOOOOOOOO against Lee AND the film will be one of the first in line to either see it at the theater, rent it at the video store, or buy it at Wal-Mart!

Side note: Tarantino would've been an excellent choice of director for this! In my honest opinion.

@TheAbomination

Spike Lee might be a lot of things, but an "overrated hack" isn't one of them. 'She's Gotta Have It', 'Do The Right Thing', 'Inside Man' and the woefully underrated '25th Hour' (Ed Norton's second best performance ever and THE definitive post 9/11 film, IMO) are anything but films made by a 'hack' director. I'm really looking forward to seeing his take on this movie.

Didn't Spike Lee and Sam Jackson have a falling out a couple years back?

Nonetheless, good to see 'em working together again.

@ guys who brought up "inside man" and "25th hour" in defense of spike lee: well done.

the whole "spike hasn't made a decent film in 10/15 years" nonsense is tiresome and in ignorance of his work. the guy isn't my favorite person but those films are great and he's an inspired choice for this remake - or whatever the hell it is.

he knows NY (where i'm assuming it'll take place) and so far the cast is great.

I would LOVE to see Spike take on Spider-man just for fun.

Not sure what the feel of this movie will be, but worth a watch. Sam Jackson is like Liam Neeson in that he is in everything.

all this time i've admired Sam Jackson's willingness to be involved in most of cbm's milestone projects, jurassic park, the new star wars trilogy and the marvel cinematic universe..but, just a cupla nites ago i caught this lame-o very cheap looking fighting flick with 'that guy from Twilight', called ARENA. it just sooooo badly ugh, i just can't believe that someone like Sam Jackson would WANT to be associated with this stinker. Jumper at least was meant to be a good movie, and it got Diane Lane, Anakin, that girl from The OC and Billy Elliott..AND Doug Liman directing, so i can see the attraction to the project.

but Arena..??!! he should FIRE the agent who got him that job.
