Avengers: Doomsday will bring Hayley Atwell back to the MCU as Peggy Carter, though exact her role in the movie currently remains to be seen. The actress saw plenty of action in Marvel Animation's What If...?, but Captain Carter's live-action debut was cut short—literally—by the Scarlet Witch in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
Avengers Endgame: Encore's new ending featured Loki interrupting Steve Rogers' dance with Peggy in a hugely intriguing tease for this December. However, the character has otherwise been absent from trailers for Avengers: Doomsday.
Talking to The Playlist, Atwell shared her excitement for fans to see the character's story arc in the movie. In the process, she shed unexpected light on Marvel Studios and the Russo Brothers' unique approach to making these movies.
"I think with this, though, there is such meticulous care for delighting the fans that I really feel that the studio knows exactly what it’s doing for the sake of really delighting and satisfying the expectation and going beyond it," she explained. "So ['Doomsday'] comes out in December, [and] it’s so epic."
"It’s so extraordinary, the level of ambition and scope that they had for it, that I knew that whatever we were trying — and we tried different things, we shot different things, there were different storylines, some picked up, some developed, some dropped away," Atwell admitted. "It really is with the intention of finding the thing that makes the most sense for those characters, but also for what role they play in this part of the world."
These comments come as unverified rumours swirl on social media that the story arcs of characters like The Sentry and Captain Marvel have been greatly reduced after reshoots. Boris, meanwhile, has supposedly been completely cut.
While Atwell sounds excited about what Marvel Studios has in store for her in Avengers: Doomsday, it doesn't appear as if Peggy will see much in the way of action. Instead, that's something the actress is hoping to explore in a future MCU project.
"I’ve said publicly that any time I’ve been asked to come back or speculation of me coming back, of wanting to in some way do something new and evolve her more," Atwell shared. "And I love the fact that in 'What If...?' it was an animation, but we saw her doing so much more than I’d gotten to do in a practical sense in the live action."
"And I hope that that’s something that if the fans want it specifically, that there is a calling for that to happen at some point. I’d be willing to have that conversation for sure," she concluded.
In Avengers: Doomsday, beloved heroes from three distinct universes will be set on a deadly collision course and face an existential threat unlike anything they’ve ever encountered.
The movie is set to be released on December 18. We've also included some promo art and the latest test screening chatter for you below.
