AVENGERS 4 Directors Explain Those Apparent Time-Travel Scenes In The INFINITY WAR Sequel

Photos from the set of Avengers 4 showing either flashbacks or time-travel have been doing the rounds for months now but what do Joe and Anthony Russo have to say about them? Their answer may surprise you.

Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers 4 directors Joe and Anthony Russo recently sat down for an in-depth discussion about both movies and the subject of those recent set photos came up. In those, we've seen many of moments from The Avengers including Loki's capture and the Battle for New York.

The prevailing theory is that Earth's Mightiest Heroes are going to use the Time Stone to travel back in time and when the filmmakers were asked about using that as a plot device, Anthony responded, "Oh you know, big fan of the technique." Both of them then mentioned Back to the Future before Joe addressed those set photos head on and appeared to then debunk the time travel theory entirely.

"Look, it's interesting because yes there are photos that always leak, and then there's lots of conjecture about what those photos mean," he explained. "Certainly there is a five-minute sequence in 'Civil War' around a piece of technology that was laid in for a very specific reason. So if you go back and look at that film, you may get a hint as to a direction." That's a reference to B.A.R.F.!

The movie showed Tony Stark using that device to revisit a key moment from his past and it makes perfect sense that Avengers 4 will send the Armoured Avenger - and Ant-Man, it seems - back to the Battle of New York to possibly try and find a way to stop Thanos. A case containing B.A.R.F. has also been spotted on set. Do you buy these comments? Let us know your thoughts and theories below.

I think the whole BARF situation is a misdirect.

Not only because they are hinting to it here; why would they want to spoil a segment of Avngers 4?

But there were paparazzi/leaked photos in which the crew were holding a box (whihc was in clear view) whihc said BARF on it. If they are shooting on location, they would clearly have a code name on the box if it were BARF.

The blatant setting up the case for the cameras to see and their willingness to talk about it sounds like misdirection.

@IKidYouNotMan - Or they're trying to temper fan expectations. Some of the biggest backlash against The Last Jedi came from the movie not living up to fan theories about Snoke or Rey. But it's important to realise they're only theories, and you may be setting yourself up for disappointment if you take them as truth.

this script resource of B.A.R.F. it's better than time travel or parallel realities .. I understand that time travel and parallel realities are common in comics .. and that this might even hurt a Flashpoint-focused movie from Warner / DC .. but I think B.A.R.F. it's better .. we already have time travel and enough parallel realities in movies.

The barf scene totally made me want to barf. Tony looked absolutely terrible, I wish they didn’t even make his parents part of the story.

[frick]ing civil war dude. Iron man fights cap because he disagrees with his friend so passionately that he decides to kick his ass? Because cap is standing in the way of his vision? SOMETHING NEW AND INTERESTING?

No, let’s make him get mad about his dead parents. Like we haven’t [frick]ing seen that before.

@BloodyBed - I know right? We had 2 stories banking on the idea of heroes going against each other based on different views on justice that year yet neither of them went all out with them. Tony couldn't just have different views than Steve. He needed a supervillain to motivate him with his dead parents. Batman couldn't just view Superman as a potential threat. He needed a supervillain to pull the strings. And neither movie could give us an ending where we aren't sure whether the wounds could be healed. They both make it clear all this stuff will be solved either now or by the time of the next movie. By making it more needlessly complicated, they ironically made it less complex in both cases.
