Avengers: Endgame Writer Reveals Marvel Studios Pushed Back On This Major Character's Death

Avengers: Endgame said farewell to some major characters, and one of the movie's writers has now revealed that Black Widow's death faced some major pushback from concerned Marvel Studios executives.

Avengers: Endgame remains Marvel Studios' biggest achievement, and the movie's shadow has loomed large over the entire Multiverse Saga. Topping, or even matching, the heights of the 2019 blockbuster has proven near-impossible for the MCU.

We'll find out this December whether Avengers: Doomsday can reach those same heights. In the meantime, writer Stephen McFeely—who penned Avengers: Endgame's script with Christopher Markus—revealed the moment that received the biggest pushback from Marvel Studios.

In Avengers: Endgame, Clint Barton and Natasha Romanoff head to Vormir to retrieve the Soul Stone. However, the only way to get the ancient cosmic artefact necessary to defeat Thanos is for one of them to make the ultimate sacrifice: a soul for a soul.

Black Widow takes the fall, stopping Hawkeye from doing so in the hope that he'll eventually be reunited with his family. It's a tragic, heartbreaking moment and one that wasn't easy for the writers.

"It’s not a small thing to kill off a principal female character in the MCU," McFeely told Forbes. "We tried a version of Hawkeye [dying] and a number of the female employees at Marvel, when they read [the script], grabbed me in the hallway and said, 'Don’t you do this to her. Don’t you take her heroic moment and give it to him.' And I said, 'Oh, that’s a really good point.'"

"There was a sense of dread over the decision. 'Okay, we’re going to go to New York—great. We’re going to go to Asgard—great. We’re going to go to Vormir—that’s bad,'" he recalled. "So, in the design, we needed to make sure that two people who loved each other went, and [Black Widow and Hawkeye] were the obvious pairing."

"So, even though it’s a platonic relationship, they’ve been together as a duo in the Avengers the whole time."

Ultimately, they decided this was the best direction to take Black Widow. "In our mind, it was always going to be [Black Widow] because she was, I would argue, the greater hero in some ways, but selfishly, just as part of what my job is, I want to make you feel the worst you can feel."

"But also, in the big picture, she’s got red in her ledger, and she’s been trying to make up for that her entire life. That’s why when she found the Avengers, they were a new family for her. So, this idea that she could save her family, in the greater sense of that, was really important."

Some fans have argued that Iron Man's eventual demise completely overshadowed Black Widow's sacrifice, but Avengers: Endgame intentionally mentions her passing several times right up until that moment. That was important for the movie's creative team.

"We were mentioning her all over the ending of the movie, where Hulk says, ‘I tried to bring her back,’ and Hawkeye is lamenting her loss with the Scarlet Witch," McFeely said. "It was about the best we could have done, given there was another character that was going to sacrifice himself."

Scarlett Johansson later reprised the role in a Black Widow movie set between the events of Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War. That served as her final farewell, and Florence Pugh's Yelena Belova has since inherited the "Black Widow" mantle.

The grave course of events set in motion by Thanos that wiped out half the universe and fractured the Avengers ranks compels the remaining Avengers to take one final stand in Marvel Studios’ grand conclusion to twenty-two films, Avengers: Endgame.

Directed by Anthony and Joe Russo and written by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, the movie features an epic ensemble which includes Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Don Cheadle, Paul Rudd, Brie Larson, Karen Gillan, Danai Gurira, Benedict Wong, Jon Favreau, Bradley Cooper, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Josh Brolin.

"Avengers: Endgame is a masterpiece which not only delivers on every expectation you had but exceeds ones you didn't even think about," we wrote in our review of the re-release. "This isn't just a movie; it's an experience and one that only gets better for its Encore."

Avengers Endgame: Encore is now playing in theaters.

Was it ever explained why Bruce couldn’t bring her back? Is her soul now on the gem or something?

@Gambito - It doesn’t really make a lot of sense to me. Like at the very least the Avengers could bring back a version of Natasha since Gamora was also sacrificed and a version of her brought back. But also when Cap returns the soul stone can’t he just stop the sacrifice and bring back that exact Natasha?

@Gambito - its because they werent time traveling but multiverse hopping. so there is only 1 natasha of 616 and she died in another multiverse meaning death is permanent in the mcu. cap went to return all the gems in the ending, but the plothole is how do u return the soul gem? maybe thats going to be a plot point in doomsday, but everyone jus let it go becuz they thought it was going to be the last time seeing the og avengers.

biggest issue with the endgame movie is that russo's weren't on the same page with writers markus & freely. markus & freely wrote a time travel story that is supposed to nip all multiverse branches by the end of the film, but russo's intent was that they just introduced a multi-verse of possibilities. russo's are the reason why the multi-verse saga is a mess and vague, thats why it only made sense to bring them back to end it.

@TheUnworthyThor - they didn't bring back a version of Natasha because it wouldn't have been "their natasha". Gotg vol 3 dealt with this idea, thats why Starlord spent the whole movie not just trying to save rocket but coming to terms with it. Gunn showed this distinction by giving multi-verse Gamora a different personality, thats why gamora ended up returning to the Ravagers instead of sticking around with the guardians because she wasn't as caring, loving, or righteous as the 616 gamora that died.

@mastakilla39 - name movie that’s does not have plot holes in them anyone who act as non paid movie critic will find them in comic book and non comic book movies all movies have them none of them are perfect

@dragon316 - Never said I didn't like Endgame. Its a solid 3/5 movie, but after coming out of the cinema the ending left me with more questions than answers because similar to Markus & Freely's intent I and most people who were paying attention took it as a time travel story as it was written as such. Hulk explained to ancient one in the film that Cap needs to return all the stones to avoid branch multi-verses from being created because if they return them at the exact point or before anything major happens it will stop any branch universes from being created.

So by the end of the film I was wondering what happened with Loki who stole the tesseract is he immune because he has an infinity stone, how do you return the soul stone, and doesn't there mean there are 2 Caps in 616? But as we saw in the later films they used the gimick of "multi-verse" to cover up or leave any plot holes open-ended.

Most people like I said, ignored the plot holes because they were more satisfied at where everyone ended up rather than explaining "how". Its the same thing with Dark Knight Rises, how did Batman survive a huge bomb blast even with auto pilot because Nolan clearly showed batman still in the Bat-Copter? People are just giving free-passes because they think its the end of a series/trilogy.

@Gambito - I dunno, I feel that it is pretty reasonable "magic rule" that you can't use the stones to undo the payment you had to give to get one of the stones.

I’m glad they went the direction they did since Natasha dying was more emotional then if Clint would have since that would have been too simple imo while it gives the former a nice sense of closure to her redemption…

Plus in hindsight , it gave the creative team for his show some material to deal with the fallout of that incident via Clint’s guilt about it and Yelena etc.

I do think Tony’s death perhaps overshadowed Nat’s to an extent (I still think they should have had a joint funeral for her alongside his) but the impact was still felt imo!!.

What I dont understand is why they haven't realized there is another Scar Jo out there. Like what happened with Gamora, the past self became the present Gamora. Wouldnt that have been possible with Scar Jo? She existed, so shouldnt they have been able to pull the past one to the present if they wanted?
And at the very least at this point there is another version of BW in another universe...

@AgentofSH1ELD - Gamora didn’t try to sue the crap out of Disney though

Bear with me here - Engame is the single greatest cinematic experience I've ever witnessed, but one of the few things that has always nagged at me about the movie is that Natasha was absent from the final resolution of the Infinity Saga. While I do think her sacrifice fits the story perfectly, what bothers me is that the writers missed a perfect opportunity to include her in a small but simple way:

Something that bothers me about Infinity War/Endgame is that the Thanos/Young Gamora scene 'inside' the Soul Stone after the initial Snap is just there, left hanging after they opted to cut the companion scene from Endgame with Tony and grown-up Morgan after his snap in Endgame. I would've kept that scene in, but instead of the Snappers encountering their 'daughters', I would've reframed it as they're meeting up with the person who sacrificed themselves to the Soul Stone - meaning Tony would've faced Natasha. She should've been dressed just as she was when they first met in Iron Man 2 (like Gamora appeared as she was when Thanos first met her), and they could've even had the same verbal exchange ("Did you do it?"/"Yes"/"What did it cost"/"Everything"). This would've given Black Widow some involvement in the endgame, and, it would've even added more resonance to Clint and Wanda's scene by the lake, where Clint ponders if Natasha knows that they won. Just my convoluted opinion.

@WADEZILLA13 - that could have been interesting but I’m glad that grown up Morgan and Tony scene was cut…

I like the idea of Thanos encountering young Gamora since I always took it as how he viewed her always was still as that little girl but Tony imagining grown up Morgan just felt logically like a weird leap for me , if I’m making any sense.

@WADEZILLA13 - ehhh.. I get what you are saying but Black Widow did have involvement in Endgame. She is the whole reason they were able to defeat Thanos. 1 out of 14,000,605. She was part of that 1. If Clint had made the sacrifice, they wouldnt have won.
WADEZILLA13
WADEZILLA13 - 10/1/2026, 12:44 PM
@AgentofSH1ELD - I don't dispute that; what I'm proposing is a way that she actually could've appeared in the final sequence of events.
AgentofSH1ELD
AgentofSH1ELD - 10/1/2026, 1:14 PM
@WADEZILLA13 - They would have had to include a scene where they grabbed her from Avengers 2012 or something like that. Only way she could have physically been there was a past version of herself.
WADEZILLA13
WADEZILLA13 - 10/1/2026, 1:37 PM
@AgentofSH1ELD - I'm not saying she should've been there physically, I was suggesting she appear in a Soul Stone vision. I thought I explained it pretty clearly. I just think it would've been a neat way to get her onscreen after the battle and bookend her story.
AgentofSH1ELD
AgentofSH1ELD - 10/2/2026, 7:56 AM
@WADEZILLA13 - But im saying I dont think it needed a bookend. To me, having some type of soul stone vision would cheapen her sacrifice. It carries more emotional weight without anything on type of it.

Nah, still should've been Clint's useless ass.

I think either of them (Clint or Natasha) sacrificing themselves would have carried weight. I think the Nat one does make sense for reasons described, and adds a level of further tragedy to Clint, making his win of getting back his family not entirely rosy. But a Clint sacrifice would've hit hard too. I think it's tough though to imagine how that would've played out -- Nat would've had even more tragedy baggage, and when Clint's family would've returned, he would've been gone. That would've made the ending carry more complicated sadness. Unfortunately Natasha being so much of a lone wolf outside of the Avengers offers maybe a cleaner ending emotionally. I do agree that it could've been taking away a big moment from her, but I don't think that should be the sole reason, and it doesn't sound like it was. Plus, Yelena rules, and I really enjoyed a lot of the Hawkeye series and the introduction of Kate Bishop to the MCU, albeit underutilized at this point.

AgentofSH1ELD - 10/1/2026, 1:13 PM
@blacksocksdaily - It wouldnt have worked b/c it would have been Clint that made the sacrifice and thats not part of the series of events that Dr. Strange said needed to take place for them to win. It was her and her only.
blacksocksdaily
blacksocksdaily - 10/1/2026, 3:13 PM
@AgentofSH1ELD - Yes, but in the case that the “1 way” involved Clint dying instead of Natasha. 🤦‍♂️
AgentofSH1ELD
AgentofSH1ELD - 10/2/2026, 8:26 AM
@blacksocksdaily - I think the writers knew that fans were more emotionally invested in Nat than they were clint.
