With it looking increasingly likely that Tom Holland's Spider-Man will be absent from this December's Avengers: Doomsday, all eyes turn to Avengers: Secret Wars.
It's hard to imagine the web-slinger being absent from both movies. However, Marvel Studios has to share Peter Parker with Sony Pictures, so getting him to assemble with the rest of Earth's Mightiest Heroes isn't necessarily easy. Fortunately, we have a positive update for you today.
According to former Nexus Point News reporter @ApocHorseman, Holland will return as Spider-Man in Avengers: Secret Wars. However, "he's probably only going to shoot for a little bit," given his busy schedule (including his upcoming Fred Astaire biopic).
The insider added, "To clarify, all the actors film briefly. I don’t think anyone other than [Robert Downey Jr.] is there for the majority of the shoot. That’s how they did Doomsday."
This news comes at a time when there's a great deal of uncertainty surrounding Avengers: Secret Wars' planned December 2027 release. Fans have grown concerned following the news that the movie won't start shooting until January, but don't panic yet.
The scooper later took to X to say, "To clarify, the exact dates I heard were January, then wrap in late April or in May. That would leave them 7 to 8 months for post. I wouldn’t jump to any conclusions about delays yet. It’s not ideal but not impossible."
Daniel Richtman backed that up, writing, "For now, they’re still insisting on keeping the release date intact." This is something we have to believe Disney will put its foot down about, as losing that prime December slot and not releasing an MCU movie in 2027 would be a disaster.
A new promo poster for Avengers: Doomsday has also surfaced today, showcasing Doctor Doom and offering fans a detailed look at his armour. Once again, we have to believe the cloth on his arm is of great significance. What that is remains to be seen.
The confirmed (or semi-confirmed, at least) cast of Avengers: Secret Wars includes Robert Downey Jr. (Doctor Doom), Chris Evans (Steve Rogers), Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Anthony Mackie (Captain America), Benedict Cumberbatch (Doctor Strange), Paul Bettany (The Vision), Letitia Wright (Black Panther), Simu Liu (Shang-Chi), Florence Pugh (Yelena Belova), and Hayley Atwell (Peggy Carter).
Also appearing are Pedro Pascal (Mister Fantastic), Vanessa Kirby (Invisible Woman), Joseph Quinn (Human Torch), Ebon Moss-Bachrach (The Thing), Sadie Sink (Jean Grey), and Noah Jupe.
The Russo Brothers direct Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars from a screenplay by Stephen McFeely, with whom they previously collaborated on the Avengers and Captain America franchises. Loki and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness writer Michael Waldron has also been enlisted to refine the story, alongside Spider-Man: Brand New Day's Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers.
Avengers: Doomsday is set to be released on December 18, with Avengers: Secret Wars scheduled to arrive on December 17, 2027.
