Marvel Studios' crossover phenomenon The Avengers is becoming closer to actuality with director Joss Whedon issuing a statement via Whedonesque, addressing, confirming, and alerting fans that principal photography begins tomorrow.

Hi Pumpkins, joss here.

Tomorrow we start shooting (I THINK I'm legally permitted to say that). Day one. That's right. We'll be shooting the pivotal death/betrayal/product placement/setting up the sequel/coming out scene, at the following address:

[Marvel Lawyers rush in, take Joss's keyboard, blowtorch a picture of his family like in "Stormy Monday", drink his milkshake, leave the seat up, fluff his pillows, violently unfluff his pillows, leave]

Went too far. My bad. Anyhoo, it should be a fun day, followed by the eighty thousand other fun days it will take to finish this. I'll be checking in from time to time, if there's news or I crave attention (i.e. am awake) . None of it will be Avengers news -- I have some very denty pillows to remind of that -- but I may have tidbits. (They're not about Firefly. I should say that up front, if only to protect Sis Mo from the HATORZ.)

Some of you may be saying, Joss! Why this link, here, now, why, huh, howcum? My friend Allyx turned me on to these guys, and I'll tell you, they've gotten me through this intensely pressurized, preply time. I strongly recommend checking out their other vids -- I've watched them many many times, and I have a very special place for "Teamwork" in my heart. These guys are the guys. And IS there a better movie title than "Eagles Are Turning People Into Horses"? I thought not.

So wish me luck. DO IT! LUCK! NOW! I'm off to finish some Buffy pages, and then figure out what the movie is about already. I'm pretty sure it's about the Justice League [Marvel Lawyers re-enter, unspeakability occurs] or possibly something else. I'll get it. I've been looking forward to this. For about 46 years.

Catchphrase!

Special thanks to 'RealIronMan' of Spidermedia for the heads up. So, for all you Albuquerque, New Mexico citizens, be on the look out for stars. Though the Principal cast will be shooting next week; the first week of May.

Marvel's The Avengers picks up when an unexpected enemy emerges that threatens global safety and security. And Nick Fury, director of the international peacekeeping agency known as S.H.I.E.L.D., finds himself in need of a team to pull the world back from the brink of disaster. Starring Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Chris Evans, Jeremy Renner, Mark Ruffalo, Scarlett Johansson, Clark Gregg, Samuel L. Jackson, Cobie Smulders, Tom Hiddleston & Stellan Skarsgård, the film releases May 4, 2012!

I'm not a huge Whedon fan, but that was pretty funny. He's in good spirits for being about to take on a heavy burden of work & expectations. I think he'll do good if he's the same dude that wrote the first Toy Story...

I would imagine if Marvel thought his script was sub par they would have fired him. This isn't any old film; if it's done well this could be one of the highest grossing films ever! They have a lot riding on this.

Considering HE told THEM what the story needed to be, it's pretty safe to say they like what he's doing.

I've enjoyed his work, but he's coming off kinda geeky fanboyish. He better not f this up or I will punch him in the balls.

Must be really something. Can you imagine being a director for such a massive movie, and just waiting the day before the first day of shooting. I'd be so excited its not even funny. I wouldn't mind the stress for awesome experience. lol.

WTF?! A geeky-fanboyish director is EXACTLY what a big film like THE AVENGERS needs!! One of the craziest comments I've read on this site..

@theantagonist

Joe Johnson, Kenneth branaugh and John Favreau. None of these guys display the geeky, childish fanboy attitude. Fanboys ruin film. I'd rather have someone not know the source material, but be a really good director, and have marvel execs help "fill in blanks" on Marvel lore.

@Rodimus9

I like all of those directors and I think they fit their movies, but The Avengers is on a whole other level compared to them. In my opinion, this movie requires a director that knows and loves the source material just as much as we do. It means he understands our passion because he shares it as well and it will be conveyed in the movie!

Also, Jon did great on Iron Man but failed me on Iron Man 2. The fact that he even let Justin Theroux write the script for Iron Man 2 causes me to question his love for the character..

@antagonist

He's directed 1 movie, which was basically a 2 hour firefly episode. Don't get me wrong, he's a great writer, but he just hasn't proven himself as a director. I want a good director. When I heard Branaugh was doing Thor I was excited, because I new how good he is. Joss hasn't shown me anything director-wise. The Buffy musical was good, but we're talking The Avengers here.

I have complete faith to Josh.Favraeu had in his resume unrelated movies to the genre like elf and he nailed iron man both in my opinion.So Josh with his love for comics i think is an excellent choise.He is going to be respectful to the source material and i think if he could make awesome action sequences with the puny budget of serenity he will nail the action sequences of the avengers.I am just wondering were are all the marvel vs dc guys.No one to compare avengers with with batman?For the love of god few years ago the biggest new in cbms were batman and robin.Shit your asses down and enjoy a good movie and be thankful that it gets made.

joss whedon is pretty good writer & director,he knows his way round a comic book.

-the astonishing x-men
-the runaways
-myspace
-angel
-buffy the vampire slayer

also serenity was a good film,he wrote alien ressurection as well.

i think he'll do a fantastic job,i'll have to admit he wouldn't of been my first choice.

but marvel have picked the right directors for their movies so far.

I'm not saying he'll fail...I'm just nervous about this movie. If he falls short....reboot? I'm sure Marvel won't let it get out of hand. I like Serenity to btw.

That sounds oh so interesting. :D
This movie will be fantastic. It'll probably blow The Dark Knight out of the water, mark my words.

I'm not a big fan of Joss Whedon, but you can tell he's really passionate about his work. If reading this is any indication, he'll bring that same passion to the Avengers movie. I can't wait to see some set photos.

Guys, seriously, for all of you outhere who want to get excited about AVENGERS because of what it represents but CAN NOT because of Mr Joss Whedon... please do me a favor and watch the opening SERENITY sequence, uncut, perfectly choreographed, with pretty sharp dialogues, a pure marvel of cinema. HAVE NO FEAR MY FRIENDS, THE MAN KNOWS WHAT HE'S DOING AND WILL DELIVER THE GOODS !!!

This is why the world ends in 2012: It cannot cope with the awesomeness that is Avengers! :D I remember reading a comic about 8 years ago and in the letters page they said that crossovers and The Avengers would never make it to film. Glad to see times have changed! So can't wait for this!
