RUMOR CONTROL: You Can Join the Avengers Initiative and Kevin Pennington for Quasar After All?

During production for the Avengers, S.H.I.E.L.D will be travelling throughout New York looking for new recruits, that means you, the press release also reveals a new cast member.

First off, for now this should be taken as 100% pure speculation until it has been officially been confirmed, but a source who works at a news station in New York city has apparently just received an e-mail press release about a chance for fans in NYC to meet the cast playing S.H.I.E.L.D agents in the upcoming Avengers film during principal photography this year.

The press release also reveals a new character that was previously not known to be in the film, Quasar, who is being played (according to this) by Kevin Pennington.

S.H.I.E.L.D. invites you to join the AVENGERS initiative

Meet the cast of S.H.I.E.L.D. and join the Avengers initiative! Marvel Studios to announce a S.H.I.E.L.D. Assembly in New York City for spring 2011. During principal filming, S.H.I.E.L.D. will be out in full force in NYC to recruit and find new members. Cast members on hand include Samuel L. Jackson (Director Nick Fury), Clark Gregg (Agent Phil Coulson), Cobie Smulders (Agent Maria Hill) and Kevin Pennington (Agent Wendell Vaughn). Fans will get the chance to meet the stars and get their photograph taken with them at the event.

Apparently there were no dates or times specified, maybe to avoid a mob of fans swarming over NYC like madmen, it does seem a bit suspicious but it wouldn't be completely unrealistic for them to do this.
And some sources are saying this was not suppose to hit the news until April.

Now with Quasar to be in the film, and Ms. Marvel, does this mean that we'll be getting set up for a Kree-Skrull appearance in the Avengers 2?

But I guess we wont know for sure until a more reliable source confirms it, so for now remember, take it with a grain of salt.

Marvel72 @ "we all know marvel want to go comic after the avengers"??

Interesting - apart from the obvious stuff with Thor I haven't heard anything about that. You got any sources or links I can check?

@ orphix

it was covered on this site, its an old avenger story click the avenger logo on main, its in there somewhere i would get it myself but i'm a bit busy, check down the list of articles kevin fiege & i believe joe quesada mentioned that marvel wanted to go cosmic after the avengers.

also we done a poll what cosmic character would wou like to see make a cameo in the avengers?

i think all the clues are coming out.

-thor
-cosmic cube
-the infinity gauntlet

and now the quaser rumor,i think this could be true.

maybe some of the other long term users can confirm what i've been talking about.

Arh.... The ~thought~ of seeing Nova on the screen makes me have a pre-nerdgasm!

Still, I'm not sure if a standalone Nova movie would do well in the box office.

@ clogan

of course it will, green lantern is sort of dc answer to nova.

have jj abrams as director & chris pine as nova.

if you have the nova corp as like a inter-galactic police force,it could work.

maybe sphinx as the villain

@marvel72-- I don't really think you can call Green Lantern Dc's answer to Nova, considering Green Lantern came first.

I agree, though, that Chris Pine would OWN as Nova, and the movie would definitely be about a thousand times better than what it looks like the Green Lantern movie is shaping up to be, which is unfortunate, since I like both characters...

Project Pegasus was sorta mentioned in Iron Man 2. Tony is shown opening a wooden crate marked "Project Pegasus" got equipment to make his new element.

@marvel72-- And that's without getting into Squadron Supreme...

which reminds me of maybe one of the best comic lines of all time, from the JLA/Avengers cross-over (I don't remember who said it, but it was when the Avengers first met the JLA) "Who are these Squadron Supreme knock-offs!?"

I like a lot of the cosmic stuff BUT I hope they go about it with the right tone and pace. I want my comic book movies to feel comic-booky and not too science-fictiony (if you know what I mean).

I'm fine with near future technology ideas (Ironmans armour, super serum, hellicarriers, etc) but too much space travel, alien wars and robots arriving from the future would just be too much for me.

I remember Kevin Fiege saying once before that when you make a comicbook film you have to ask the general movie going audience to make some leaps and suspend their disbelief but you have to be careful. People would only make one leap at a time before they start switching off. Hence the reason they started with Ironman (which is a fairly reaslistic portayal of a superhero) instead of someone like Thor which is far more 'fantastical'.
LocoLobo1127
LocoLobo1127 - 2/9/2011, 7:58 AM
I want to see the Gaurdians of the Galaxy, i could see Nova making it in that way but for them to intro the Nova Corp, would be a mistake , its to close to the GL corp. So marvel should use the more modern history where the corp has been wiped out and Rider is the only Corp member left. I also absolutely demand that Rocket Racoon makes it in the movie
MIDAS
MIDAS - 2/9/2011, 8:06 AM
There have to be more super heroes than Iron Man, Thor, and Cap; because at the end of Iron Man, Nick Fury asks Tony Stark "What, did you think you were the only super hero in the world?" This implies that there already are others. (i.e. Hawkeye, Quasar, Ms. Marvel, etc.) He can't mean Thor because he hadn't come down to Earth yet, and he can't mean Cap because they hadn't found him yet.

@marvel72 - I've got your back on the cosmic movie thing. It's going to be badass especially if they get Chris Pine for Nova. Hopefully he won't be to old by the time they get around to it and hopefully the Surfer will be back in Marvel's hands along with the FF.
Clonemenace
Clonemenace - 2/9/2011, 8:13 AM
If people are willing to sit down for a very fantastical universe in the Lord of the Rings. I'm never going to buy the idea that some stupid producer wants to "dumb" down a COMIC BOOK CHARACTER for the big screen so the "general" audience won't half to flip a switch mentally.

That's both an insult to audiences everywhere and also makes little sense. After a studio decides to make a comic book movie. Reality already flew out the window. I say embrace the mythology of these characters. Everyone should know by now that comics have very fantastical story-lines. Doesn't make it bad, and certainly doesn't mean that it can't be translated on to the big screen.

nova & the silver surfer are my favorite cosmic characters, having the fantastic four back at marvel would be awesome all the characters from there grouping would be great but one springs to mind more than any else.......GALACTUS!(i bet he wouldn't look like a cloud in this one.)
Orphix
Orphix - 2/9/2011, 8:32 AM
Clonemenance @ Dude, just because Marvel Studios didn't want to start introducing their movie universe with space racoons, intergalactic police and two warring alien races doesn't mean they are 'dumbing down'.

By 'embracing the mythology' you are in serious danger of alienating a large number of the potential audience just by confusing them.

The marvel comic universe steals so many ideas from a whole host of genres (science-fiction, historical, magical, horror, war) that asking an audience to accept it in a movie would be too bewildering.

Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, even Toy Story, set up a simple, high-concept, one note premise and then run with it. The 'rules' are set up in ten minutes and then they are stuck to over the next three films.

What your suggesting would be simlar to having time travel in Lord of the Rings - or a viking warrior showing up in Star Wars.

@ Orphix: All those aspects are a part of the Marvel universe. If they are not presented it is Alienation of the source and heart of the film. If not in the movies it's more like taking the Orcs and Elves and other mythical creatures out of LOTR. That would change your staring cast and the heart of the story.
SKOne
SKOne - 2/9/2011, 11:01 AM
This is definitely not true. Kevin Pennington is just using the comic book rumor sites to stir up interest in himself. Marvel already has enough with the six Avengers members (Iron Man, Black Widow, Hawkeye, Hulk, Captain America,Thor), Agent Coulson, Maria Hill, and Nick Fury. Not to mention that from Joe Johnston's comments it really sounds like Bucky will become Winter Soldier. Having Quasar would totally ruin this movie like what happened with X-Men 3 and Spiderman 3.
Shaman
Shaman - 2/9/2011, 11:17 AM
He'll surely only be an agent of shield in the first film. And i say don't bring in ANY cosmic hero before the Kree/Skrull war spills over onto earth and introduces Captain Marvel first. Then Ms Marvel can come out of it as well as Quasar. Nova and his corps should be dead last (if ever) or hell, even stand on their own two legs. I mean come on. Realistically speaking, getting all those freakin' heroes in the same film PLUS the Nova Corps is just wishfull overkill.

@Intruder - I've been into Marvel comics for over 24 years and I know the characters so my fanboy badge is intact. We are just geeking out over the proposed Cosmic cinematic universe since they seem to be introducing Wendall Vaughn aka Quasar.
niknik
niknik - 2/9/2011, 11:38 AM
Quasar is just a dime store rip-off of Mar-Vell.......right down to the costume. If they are going to lead up to a Kree-Skrull war then they should use the characters that were actually involved in the real thing in the books, Mar-Vell being a key player. Why use a two-bit imitation when you can have the original? Makes no sense.

When Mar-Vell first came to earth it was as a spy using the assumed name of Dr. Walter Lawson. What they should do is change that assumed name to Wendell Vaughn. That way in the first flick fanboys will be thinking Quasar, then in Avengers II when the Kree-Skrull war comes up, have him revealed as Mar-Vell. That's how I'd handle it anyway. Sure as he!! wouldn't use the imitation when the original is at my disposal. That makes no sense to me at all. How does Ms. Marvel get her powers.....or her name? Better change it to Ms. Quasar.
Coldblood6

Folks relax.

What Marvel is doing here is brilliant!

They are picking good up and coming actors/actresses to play significant characters in small roles in the Avengers movie. These include Maria Hill, Wendell Vaughn, maybe Carol Danvers, etc. They will not be significant in the movie or clutter up its plot/storytelling. For Marvel fans they will be fantastic easter eggs and winks at what's coming while not confusing non-fans.

Then when they are ready to do the SHIELD movie, the Quasar movie, have Ms. Marvel join the Avengers in the 3rd Avengers movie, everything is in place.

It is a great strategy and I commend them.

Make Mine Marvel Cinematic Universe!!!

ThaMessenger07
ThaMessenger07 - 2/9/2011, 12:13 PM
@ EVERYONE: They will most likely only focus on a Skrull invasion with the Kree warning them or appearing later on in the Film. They Didn't Say Quasar they called him by name which means he will only be an agent. He is actually more relevant to the film then Mar-Vell or any Kree/Skrull member. The film will be nothing more then the Avengers beating down an Alien army if they go this route, which will be an amazing visual. This will simply open the Cosmic universe.

@ niknik: I'm sure Mar-Vell will be introduced in the first or second film before Ms. marvel is Ms. Marvel or Quasar.
