Clayface: A First Look At Matt Hagen's Monstrous Final Form Has Leaked Following Fan Screenings

With early fan screenings taking place in the UK yesterday, a first look at Matt Hagen's monstrous final form in Clayface is being shared on social media, and fans have a lot to say about it.

Yesterday evening, cinema chains across the UK held surprise screenings of DC Studios' Clayface. Oddly, those took place on the same night that the first press screening was held, meaning anyone who attended those paid-for showings is free to share their reviews.

That isn't sitting well with some critics, but the blame ultimately lies with Warner Bros. for attempting to build hype (which, based on the far more mixed social media reactions we've seen since last week's U.S. embargo lifted, hasn't paid off).

Inevitably, spoilers are everywhere, including shots of Matt Hagen's final form as Clayface. While we won't share those images here, they aren't hard to find on social media, both as blurry photos taken from the back row and as AI-enhanced, largely very accurate recreations.

Neither entirely do the design justice, and the best way to see this will, of course, be to buy a ticket and make your own mind up about the movie. However, these images are representative of the few seconds of screen time that the monstrous Clayface receives in his movie.

Clayface made his DCU debut in Creature Commandos, but they're two very different characters. We don't know how much time has passed between the two stories, though, so Matt may have evolved into a more comic-accurate Clayface over time. You'll find a deep dive into that here soon.

In our review, we concluded, "Tom Rhys Harries shines in Clayface, an uninspired and unoriginal movie that's too light on horror and lacking in comic book personality to be anything but forgettable. It should have been a game-changer for the genre; instead, it's DC's Morbius moment."

In Clayface, Matt Hagen’s meteoric rise from Gotham street kid to Hollywood leading man is tragically cut short when a local crime boss’s actions leave him horribly disfigured. Abandoned by his team and with nothing left, Matt seeks out a cutting-edge treatment that miraculously returns him to his former self, but also unexpectedly affects his grip on reality, spiralling him down a destructive path of all-consuming revenge.

The movie stars Tom Rhys Harries in the title role of the cult-favourite villain from Gotham's rogues' gallery. The cast includes Naomi Ackie, David Dencik, Max Minghella and Eddie Marsan, as well as Nancy Carroll and Joshua James.

James Watkins directs from a screenplay by Mike Flanagan and Hossein Amini, with Flanagan also getting a "Story by" credit. Clayface is produced by Matt Reeves, Lynn Harris, James Gunn and Peter Safran, with Michael E. Uslan, Chantal Nong Vo, Lars P. Winther, Rafi Crohn and Paul Ritchie executive producing.

Watkins' creative team includes director of photography Rob Hardy, production designer James Price, editor Jon Harris and costume designer Keith Madden. Volker Bertelmann (Conclave) is the movie's composer.

Clayface will be released in theaters on October 23.

@EscapeMySight - I'm all for championing practical effects but cheap-ass practical effects? For Clayface?! This character needed to be CG. Like we finally have the technology to do him justice and they choose this character to be a low budget b-movie thing.

I actually think that looks pretty cool. Alas, the movie sounds like another disappointment. Once again WB keep mslong the same mistakes and not learning from them.

@emeraldtaurus - As far as a real-word interpretation I can see how it’s actually pretty accurate. But there’s always room for interpretation in that regard either way.

@IAmAHoot - it's not comic accurate but it looks cool. Pity it's seen for a few seconds in the movie. Ill actually go see it cause it sounds good.

Don't understand why these are the kind of projects DC is trying to launch its universe with.

@Doodoopaypa - My theory is that with the success of "The Joker", WB had plans for more villain spinoffs or solo else world stories and Clayface was one of them. Then came the success of body horror movies like Smile and The Substance, WB saw an opportunity to make a low budget body horror film.

Then came Gunn's DCU inclusions. Since he has been trying to make everything under the DCU umbrella, He has the studio place Clayface within whatever continuity the DCU has and alas we have this disaster of a launch.

@SonOfAGif - ya there is no point to this and to use it in the main universe instead of a spin off is weird. They aren’t going to do nothing with Clayface and I’m willing to bet that and if they do watch them only use him in animation

It looks fine I guess. I'm weirdly disappointed by this movie and yet it's exactly what I expected from the second trailer onward. That first trailer got me so excited and everything after that has felt so lame and tame. I'll see it on streaming and I hope I'm wrong but this is really looking like it's not gonna be great.

2 out of 3 movies shit the bed. It’s a better batting average than the last attempt at a DC cinematic universe, but not by much. Being a DC fan really sucks ass, cause why tf are we getting a shitty Clayface movie anyway?

Gunn really looked at the worst parts of Sony and Phase 4/5 and said let’s do that

Oh a DC hate article full of hate comments

Where are the noble guys who spout "this site has become a cesspool of hate comments"

Oh yeah, this is not a Marvel article, lolz 😭😭😭😭😭

I don't know why you're complaining when you're cut from the same cloth. 😭 You're constantly hating on the MCU, making the same obsessive, childish comments and engaging in the same troll-like behaviour, just directed at Marvel instead of DC.

You're no different from the people you're complaining about.

The only real difference is which franchise you're obsessed with hating on, while acting like a DC apologist. You're literally two sides of the same coin. 💀

@PopBye - lolz. I think visionquest 8s great but you dont see an article for it. I also very much enjoyed Wonderman but that was cancelled. I never missed an mcu show/movie.

Those who constantly hate on DC never bothered to see it. See the difference?

And now retard wilding is on full Clayface hate afte Lanterns and the guys who frowned on the hate on this site from one of the marvel articles are now MIA.

You are not getting it

Looks more like the Preston Payne Clayface without the domed glass helmet.

Wouldn't have been hard to make him look more terrifying rather than pathetically sad.

He looks like Belial from Basket Case grew a body.

Actually kind of surprised how good the design is. Based on how everyone’s carrying on about it, it should have been way, way worse.

Everyone wants TAS design but that doesn’t make sense practically.

They shoulda just gone all in. Wh the need to show the actor's face? Just do the big monster design from BTAS.

I want to give James Gunn a chance but what the heck are they doing or planning over there at the studio. No one asked for Clayface. Give us the main DC characters or Justice league members. Once that’s done start expanding… like what’s dude doing
