Many fans have questioned the decision to make the next DCU project after Man of Tomorrow a comedic TV series like The People vs. Gorilla Grodd. A little variety isn't a bad thing, but it's an unexpected addition to a slate that still hasn't released Paradise Lost and Booster Gold.
Set footage has surprised fans, as Grodd, a formidable, terrifying villain in the comics, was spotted singing and dancing. That's a stark contrast to Creature Commandos, where we saw him in a possible future conquering the Earth alongside Circe.
We may witness Grodd's descent into villainy here, but for that, the show arguably needs The Flash. The Scarlet Speedster was last seen being played by the controversial Ezra Miller in 2023's The Flash movie, which James Gunn hailed as one of the greatest films ever made.
While Miller almost certainly won't appear in the DCU, it sounds like the Fastest Man Alive might. Following rumours that Barry will be referenced in Man of Tomorrow, scooper James Mack has claimed that there's a "100%" chance that we'll meet The Flash in The People vs. Gorilla Grodd.
Perhaps the series will feature a glimpse at a previous clash between the hero and Grodd. Barry may even be among those who testify at the villain's trial. It could even be as simple as a red blur on the screen, with that bringing us one step closer to seeing a more comic-accurate take on The Flash.
This intel doesn't come from the most reliable source, so we'll have to wait and see. After Lanterns, there's also a chance that Barry is a veteran superhero, with the spotlight shifting to Wally West for future adventures.
The People v. Gorilla Grodd follows a superintelligent ape who is convicted of murdering his father, the King of Gorilla City. In an eight-part "true" crime docuseries, the Daily Planet's Jimmy Olsen reopens the case, investigating whether Gorilla Grodd was wrongly convicted in one of Metropolis' most famous murder trials.
The Max Original comedy stars Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Jimmy Tatro as Gorilla Grodd, and Superman actors Beck Bennett as Steve Lombard, Mikaela Hoover as Cat Grant, and Wendell Pierce as Perry White.
The series also stars Mary Holland, Eduardo Franco, Arian Moayed, Dan Perrault, Andrew Leeds, and Tim Baltz. Their respective roles have not been revealed. Tony Yacenda and Dan Perrault will serve as showrunners, writers, and executive producers, with Yacenda set to direct all episodes. James Gunn and Peter Safran also serve as executive producers.
The People vs. Gorilla Grodd will likely premiere on HBO Max in 2027 or 2028.
