Clayface may not have been the smash hit DC Studios was hoping for, but the James Watkins-helmed horror movie has continued to perform relatively well over the past few weeks and has now passed its break-even point at the box office.
According to the latest updates, Clayface has now taken in $56.6 million domestically and $52.4 million internationally for a global total of $109 million.
This may sound like small potatoes when compared to other recent superhero movies, but with a reported production budget of $44 million, Clayface must now be considered a minor success for the studio.
The gruesome R-rated movie has most likely peaked, however, as Godzilla Minus Zero has stomped to the top of box office charts with $31.6 million from 3,254 theaters.
“We’re so happy to see audiences embrace ‘Godzilla Minus Zero’ at an unprecedented scale for an international film,” says Chance Huskey, VP of distribution for Gkids, which distributed the movie in the U.S. “This landmark release is the result of a thoughtful campaign by Gkids and Toho that emphasized the ‘must see’ intensity of the theatrical experience.”
Meanwhile, The Cat in the Hat took in just $10 million from 60 international markets for a global start of $30.5 million. The movie received an A CinemaScore, so there is still time for it to rebound; but with a $92 million budget, the animated adaptation will likely rank as another dud for Warner Bros.
We have heard that James Gunn and Peter Safran have tentative plans in place for more smaller-budgeted movies focusing on minor characters, but it remains to be seen if Clayface has performed well enough for Skydance to give them the go-ahead.
DC Studios’ first-ever foray into the genre, Clayface is a horror thriller from director James Watkins, starring Tom Rhys Harries in the title role of the Gotham City villain. Clayface unravels one man’s horrifying descent from rising Hollywood star to revenge-filled monster in a story that explores the loss of one’s identity and humanity, corrosive love, and the dark underbelly of scientific ambition.
The film also stars Naomi Ackie, David Dencik, Max Minghella and Eddie Marsan, as well as Nancy Carroll and Joshua James. James Watkins directs from a screenplay by Mike Flanagan and Hossein Amini, story by Flanagan, based on characters from DC.
Clayface is produced by Matt Reeves, Lynn Harris, James Gunn and Peter Safran, with Michael E. Uslan, Rafi Crohn, Paul Ritchie, Chantal Nong Vo and Lars P. Winther executive producing.
