Clayface Now "Certified Fresh" On Rotten Tomatoes; May Be Beaten To Box Office No. 1 Spot This Weekend

DC Studios' Clayface seemed like a surefire bet to claim the No. 1 spot at the domestic box office this weekend, but the R-rated DCU movie is now facing some unexpected competition...

Clayface releases this weekend, and while box office projections for the latest DCU movie remain solid - especially taking its relatively modest $30M - $40M budget into account - the R-rated body-horror comic book film will face some unexpected competition for the No. 1 spot from a movie that's entering its second weekend in theaters.

The James Watkins-directed film looks set to take in $25 million to $35 million from 3,400 North American theaters, while A24’s Elizabeth Holmes documentary, You Can See Everything, could earn a very impressive $20 million to $25 million after expanding to 2,600 venues.

This would result in YCSE becoming the rare movie to see an increase in ticket sales in its sophomore outing. The Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim-helmed meta-documentary shattered initial expectations with $15.6 million from just 855 theaters, marking the biggest opening for a nonmusical documentary in 20 years.

The review embargo for Clayface lifted earlier today, and, somewhat surprisingly following mixed social media reactions, the movie is now officially "Certified Fresh" on Rotten Tomatoes with a perfectly respectable 75% based on 83 reviews.

"It's a character-driven piece," DC Studios co-CEO Peter Safran told Collider in a recent interview. "The body horror is great, but without the characters that you care about, it really doesn't mean a lot. And the fact that there's that deep relationship that is ultimately quite twisted between Tom and Naomi [Ackie]'s characters is an important part of it.

I think the best horror movies, if you strip out the horror elements, are still good dramas, and this one has that element. You are following Tom falling in love with his doctor."

Do you plan on seeing Clayface this weekend? Let us know in the comments.

DC Studios’ first-ever foray into the genre, Clayface is a horror thriller from director James Watkins, starring Tom Rhys Harries in the title role of the Gotham City villain. Clayface unravels one man’s horrifying descent from rising Hollywood star to revenge-filled monster in a story that explores the loss of one’s identity and humanity, corrosive love, and the dark underbelly of scientific ambition.

The film also stars Naomi Ackie, David Dencik, Max Minghella and Eddie Marsan, as well as Nancy Carroll and Joshua James. James Watkins directs from a screenplay by Mike Flanagan and Hossein Amini, story by Flanagan, based on characters from DC.

Clayface is produced by Matt Reeves, Lynn Harris, James Gunn and Peter Safran, with Michael E. Uslan, Rafi Crohn, Paul Ritchie, Chantal Nong Vo and Lars P. Winther executive producing.

It is still going to flop. Look at what's about to happen with Wildwood also releasing this weekend. 100% on Rotten Tomatoes and will be lucky to even make half its budget back.

@DoomGame - Wildwood is what we call "counter programming". The crowd who sees an animated film is not the same crowd for Clayface. This is a false equivalency. And if you think Clayface won't make a profit from a 40m budget with 10m in tax cuts YOU'RE DELUSIONAL

@WhatIfRickJames - I cant tell. WB gave Zack a HEROS welcome last month & told him they was wrong for interfering & changing his vision etc. Zack didn't have FREE Reign like Gunn. Also his 5 Films MOS,BVS, Aquaman 1, Wonder Woman 1, & Zacks JLA ALL did VERY well. Gunn is STRUGGLING MIGHTILY his films & TV shows.😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

Certified fresh at 85 reviews?

I see the studios are up to their old tricks again.

@NotMyDiagnosis - what's the problem? They're critics. What happens when the audience score is just as high? Say more stupid comments?
Irregular
Irregular - 10/21/2026, 7:29 PM
@NotMyDiagnosis - I mean...it hit all the criteria for what can be considered certified fresh so I mean it is working by design. Of course it could lose the verified badge in the next 2-3 days.
NotMyDiagnosis
NotMyDiagnosis - 10/21/2026, 7:44 PM
@Irregular - oh im aware, but im also aware how studios invite certain critics to screenings first to try and get that certified fresh for the opening weekend.

Supergirl actually meets that criteria as it is sitting at 300+ reviews with a 52% meaning over half of those reviews are fresh (and has over 5 top critic fresh reviews), the only issue they had is that a lot of the rotten reviews hit within the first week which tanked its score quickly.

Obviously this doesn't always go to plan but I can see how scores can be manipulated.
NotMyDiagnosis
NotMyDiagnosis - 10/21/2026, 7:46 PM
@bobevanz - supergirl has 380 reviews with around 190 + fresh reviews dickwipe. You do the math.

@NotMyDiagnosis - @bobevanz is a Gunn Glazer!! Hes gonna shill for him til his last breath!😂😂😂😂He shilled for Supergirl saying it was gonna out do Spiderman😂😂😂😂Then Supergirl flopped...HARD & his response was, "I like the film y'all are haters..& dont like women..."😂😂😂No we dont like BULL SHIT!
Irregular
Irregular - 10/21/2026, 7:57 PM
@NotMyDiagnosis - "Supergirl actually meets that criteria as it is sitting at 300+ reviews with a 52% meaning over half of those reviews are fresh"

Um..NO. From the site:

Certified Fresh status is a special designation awarded to the best-reviewed movies and TV shows. To qualify, movies or TV shows must meet the following requirements:

-A Tomatometer score of 75% or higher, with at least five reviews from Top Critics.
-Films in wide release must have a minimum of 80 reviews. This also applies for films expanding from limited to wide release.
-Films in limited release must have a minimum of 40 reviews.
-Streaming movies must have a minimum of 40 reviews.
-Only individual seasons of a TV show are eligible, and each season must have accrued reviews from a minimum of 20 critics, 5 among them Top Critics.
-Theatrical releases that premiere at festivals must have an announced theatrical rollout date unless they meet or exceed the Certified Fresh criteria for wide releases.

So like I said...by design it's considered Certified Fresh. Means out of that number of 80, 75% of those critics...enjoyed Clayface. Like I said too, it could lose the badge in the next 2-3 days. But as of NOW. At the time of your comment where you saw the badge...it is what it is by design.

NotMyDiagnosis
NotMyDiagnosis - 10/22/2026, 3:17 AM
@Irregular - i literally agreed with what you said. The only difference was supergirl had rotten reviews out of the gate, had the majority of the 190+ fresh reviews come in before the rotten reviews it would have achieved the certified fresh rating in its opening weekend.

My point is, if studios know which critics usually favour their movies they can give them earlier screenings to try and manipulate the score before the rest of the critics get a chance to see it.
