UPDATE: Clayface's Surprising CinemaScore Revealed As DCU Movie Eyes $23+ Million Opening Weekend

Clayface has earned an impressive A- CinemaScore, matching The Batman and Superman. With strong audience scores, can DC Studios' $44 million horror movie become a box office hit?

UPDATE: The latest box office update suggests that Clayface is now on track to end the weekend with $25 million. DC Studios and Warner Bros. Discovery projected a $25 million to $30 million start, so even though it's on the lower end, this still falls within expectations.

Overseas may be a different matter. According to Exhibitor Relations Co., Clayface is "silly putty overseas—just $4.3M Friday in 76 markets on over 13k screens." While not confirmed, that could lead to a $15 million to $20 million start internationally, which would be a $40+ million global bow.

If the positive word of mouth has a similar impact to Obsession, then Clayface will make plenty of money heading into Halloween. However, should it suffer a 50% to 60% drop (the norm for most superhero movies), then it will be a challenge—but not impossible—for the latest DCU title to break even; to do so, the R-rated horror title needs to finish its run with an estimated $110 million.

Only time will tell whether Clayface becomes another huge breakout box office success for the horror genre, but the R-rated DC Studios movie has struck a chord with moviegoers.

Clayface has been awarded an A- CinemaScore, an impressive achievement for both the DC brand and horror movies. In terms of the former, it matches Superman, The Batman, Aquaman, and Man of Steel.

More impressive is that Clayface is one of the only post-COVID horror movies to receive an A-, putting it on par with A Quiet Place 2, Weapons, Five Nights at Freddy's, and even Obsession. In terms of critical reception, this is the win DC Studios needed after the tepid response to Supergirl in June.

James Gunn took to Threads for a victory lap, writing, "Really proud of this. Sinners is the only horror movie to have EVER gotten an A Cinemascore, and only three horror movies have gotten an A- in the last couple years -- Obsession, Weapons, and, now, Clayface. As always, all praise goes to James, Mike, Hossein, Tom, Naomi and the whole gang."

With 76% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes and a glowing 94% audience score, things look good for Clayface on that front. In terms of box office, Deadline reports that after a $9.5 million Friday (including $3.5 million from previews), it's now eyeing a $23 million to $25 million opening weekend in North America.

This is a weak result for the DC brand, but a solid performance for a horror movie. In fact, it's in the same ballpark as Smile and Black Phone 2, which went on to earn $355.5 million and $132.2 million, respectively. Needless to say, numbers like that would be a huge win for a title that only cost $44 million to produce.

While Clayface should open at #1, You Can See Everything is nipping at its heels with an estimated $19+ million second weekend. Laika's Wildwood, meanwhile, is in third place with an expected $11 million haul. Street Fighter, however, has slipped down the charts for a $9.5 million second frame.

We concluded our Clayface review by saying, "Tom Rhys Harries shines in Clayface, an uninspired and unoriginal movie that's too light on horror and lacking in comic book personality to be anything but forgettable. It should have been a game-changer for the genre; instead, it's DC's Morbius moment."

In Clayface, Matt Hagen’s meteoric rise from Gotham street kid to Hollywood leading man is tragically cut short when a local crime boss’s actions leave him horribly disfigured. Abandoned by his team and with nothing left, Matt seeks out a cutting-edge treatment that miraculously returns him to his former self, but also unexpectedly affects his grip on reality, spiralling him down a destructive path of all-consuming revenge.

The movie stars Tom Rhys Harries in the title role of the "cult-favourite" villain from Gotham's rogues' gallery. The cast includes Naomi Ackie, David Dencik, Max Minghella and Eddie Marsan, as well as Nancy Carroll and Joshua James.

Directed by James Watkins from a screenplay by Mike Flanagan and Hossein Amini, Clayface is now playing in theaters.

@dragon316 - i am thats why didnt want to spend money on it. The trailers look generic and I dont trust the critics when it comes to the DCU.

However, if the audience are giving it a similar rating to movies I do like, I'm more inclined to check it out.

@NotMyDiagnosis - At the very least try it out on discount Tuesday if you don't want to spend too much $. I highly recommend and I keep telling everyone that I was super skeptical of this movie until I watched it and it has to be one of my favorites now. Tom Rhys I would say is next to Heath Ledger (which I know will be very controversial too many people lol)

@SupermanFamFan - here in the UK I use a taste Card, therefore most of my cinema tickets are half price lol. It was more about not wanting to support WB, but yeah I may have to break that rule for this one.

@NotMyDiagnosis - It's not a bad movie but you're no missing anything if you wait till it streams either. You'd never know it was a DC movie so you're not missing anything.

Wildwood is a bonafide masterpiece. I actually can't believe how good it was.

Clayface is just one of the better villain movies and compared to recent DC fare it stands out a little. But it is pretty [frick]ing disposable. Wildwood is peak cinema.

ClayFACE?! [frick] that. ClayMATION!

@UltronIO - Oh Idk dude, there are some scenes in Clayface that in my opinion will be considered classic one day...

@SupermanFamFan - like what?

SupermanFamFan - 10/24/2026, 11:24 AM
@UltronIO - The Club scene was great, how Rhys acted and messed with the mobsters was satisfying as hell for me. He was toying with them and it was great 👍

The overall interaction between him and the love interest as he was getting worse made me think of classics like Nosferatu (Klaus Kinski), and how he hides in the sewers as his base seeing the homeless people in the tunnels to. Then to him talking to the girl which turned out to be him acting as her was a great twist.

The best part which I feel they took a note from the Penguin when Matt kills the girls fiance cements Clayface as a villain not an "anti-hero". Like how at the end of Penguin you think there might be some good in Cobblepot with the boy he mentors but he ends up choking him to death on the bench to make it clear Oz is a bad evil killer.

And for me the final reveal of his monstrous form was epic I loved it.

Mind you I am a total critic of DCU, did not like Supergirl or Lanterns so was genuinely surprised by this movie.

UltronIO - 10/24/2026, 11:46 AM
@SupermanFamFan - I thought the club scene went on too long. Like we get it they don't know it's him and he keeps turning into other people confusing them. I also thought the low-budget lack of effects let it down.

I did like a lot of the stuff with the doctor. The movie kept reminding me of better movies too. At the end when she had to kill him reminded me of the ending of The Fly, but nowhere near as epic (the score to The Fly was dope and really sells that moment in that film). I thought she was one of the only truly good actors in the piece. And it was the lady from Star Wars 9 on the space horse! I like her, she's really talented.

I didn't like the last shot though. They were so close to the BTAS design but they [frick]ed it up by showing half his human face. That pissed me off tbh.

Immana be real my favorite parts all had the hot gangster's moll in them. Because she was really hot.

SupermanFamFan - 10/24/2026, 1:37 PM
@UltronIO - Bro I respect this POV! I agree 💯 The Fly was an epic movie with a unforgettable soundtrack, I guess I just enjoyed Tom Rhys playing with the mob like they were playthings it was fun.

And yes the Dr was fantastic I've never seen her before (stopped watching Star Wars after Force awakens so that's probably why) but she impressed me and her compassion for Matt felt so genuine I teared up on some of the scenes with both of them.

And True I can't deny this it was so close to BTAS it didn't bother me though because I feel like it's still the beginning of his saga so he's not fully into the character yet but I can see them (if they don't screw up in the future) making either another Clayface movie that builds into a bigger plot with Batman or just have Clayface show up in Batman DCU all in as the BTAS design if they use Creature Commandos Season 2 to fill in some of Matt's gaps in between which they should do but probably won't...

@SupermanFamFan - I'm into it. But I think it should be Vs Battinson imho. This film felt like it was Matt Reeves Gotham. And it started out as a batverse movie so that's probably why. I noticed that Matt Reeves producer credit came before James Gunn's producer credit.

I know it's supposed to be DCU I just feel like it would fit into Reeves world a lot better.
SupermanFamFan
SupermanFamFan - 10/24/2026, 4:00 PM
@UltronIO - I agree wholeheartedly that this should be in Reeves world, I hope it ends up being so but if it succeeds financially Gunn might use that as a reason to bring it into the DCU

I managed to obtain a totally legit copy yesterday. its not a bad film (im saying this as a non dc fanboy) but what lets it down is that is a literal scene for scene remake of darkman, it borrows so heavily from that movie. and the final form reveal was pretty bad, otherwise its not great but not bad just ok

@HumanRubiksCube - all movies take ideas from other movies but avatar makes it that obvious

SupermanFamFan - 10/24/2026, 8:33 AM
@HumanRubiksCube - I loved the final form scene thought it was epic! But all good bro! I've never seen Darkman but imo it took elements from The Fly, Nosferatu (Kaul Kinski' version) and mixed the worlds of Penguin and Gotham TV series so I fell in love with Clayface despite being super cynical before reseeding it.

@CristianE - The movie has excellent 👌 quality, I wouldn't consider it horror I feel like it's more of an action pulp thriller which to the contrary from what everyone was saying before it released makes it feel more like a comic origin story...
