Danny Devito On Christopher Nolan's Batman Movies

Danny Devito On Christopher Nolan's Batman Movies

The ex Penguin from Tim Burton's movies shares his feelings on the current Bat franchise with MTV..

"I think they should do what they do best: take other people's ideas and make movies out of them," DeVito told MTV News when asked how he feels the studio should proceed with the next installment. "I wouldn't want to stand in the way of regress of progress."

The "Always Sunny in Philadelphia" actor then back peddled, saying that it isn't Nolan's films he's criticizing, but studios' affinity for dusting off old properties instead of pursuing new, original ideas.

"I think [Nolan] is great and did a great job with all of the Batman [films]," said DeVito. "I think he's an excellent director and an excellent filmmaker. ... I'm a big fan."

"I loved [Michael] Keaton and I loved [George] Clooney and all the people who played [Bruce Wayne], but this is kind of a more visceral thing now," explained DeVito.

"I don't think they're going to come close to anything Tim Burton does," he said. "You can't out-Fellini [Federico] Fellini and you can't out-Burton Burton, so it's good they're taking another tact."

Personally I have no idea what the logic is behind his way of thinking. Wasn't Burton just taking the ideas from the comics to make his movies? Maybe he's bitter they didn't ask him to reprise his role!

He was great as the penguin they used in the movie..but that Penguin was NOTHING like the one in the comics. Every writer pretty much wrote Penguin as the same gentleman thief who could turn a bit nasty but was never that grotesque monster Burton made him.

Just bring back Danny for the third Batman. Who else can fit that character today? Maybe that kid from Simon Birch if he's still around

I follow his logic entirely. Maybe not his comparison of Tim Burton to Frederico Fellini, but that's a matter of opinion.

He loved Clooney? No wonder you stopped reading at that point Phineas

Erm Danny DeVito, you have no right to say Burton's movies were better. Nolans movies are way better. Dont get me wrong I love Tim Burton and his Batman movies, but hmmm at least Nolan wasnt the one who gave his villain a big [frick]ing duck car and strapped a load of bombs to a bunch of penguins. I mean what?! Ah, Im just amazed the guy is still alive, he hasnt had a hit movie in ages. I loved Twins but the last time I saw him in anything good was that episode of Friends when he was the stripper policeman!

Ok guys, another reason to ignore Danny is he is rumoured to be in Rush Hour 4. Ok he says Burton is a better director but then he ends up in a Brett Ratner movie. Hahaha the irony!

"...killing children? I mean, isn't that a little?..."

BANG

"No... It's a lot."

DeVito's best line in the film. Was a good, but not great movie.

And you are right Phinehas. Lost me at Clooney.

I agree Ror..Penguin is supposed to be a gentlemanly stuffed-shirt kind of guy---I don't like Penguin as a freak (Although Danny Devito portrayed that part perfectly)...sorry about that all P's alliteration there! lol I guess I'm a little like Stan Lee with all the alliterations...ver-r-ry little! Batman Returns is still currently the 4th best Batman movie ever made.

I guess he can take solace in that.

Burton's Batman movies and Nolan's Batman movies fit their times perfectly. They're both simply amazing braces of film and story telling.

Amazing pieces of comic adaptation.

For me Burton's Batman captured the crazy/funny side of Joker like Alan Moore's Killing Joke whereas Nolan's The Dark Knight hit more of Brian Azzarello tale of The Joker.. Superb

Has anyone seen the PS3 slim?? And if your a PS3 owner like me, are you a little pissed that it's new hardware?

Who's trading in their older PS3's?????
Imran
Imran - 8/19/2009, 6:16 PM
PS3 slim?!!! WTF? Send me a link dude

When I was small I always thought Danny Devito and the guy from Roger Rabbit were one and the same
Imran
Imran - 8/19/2009, 6:20 PM
Okay googled it.. Looks like it's the way Sony had to go really but don't think there is a need to trade in your old PS3 but I might just do anyways lol.. 120GB and smaller.. Cool

Not like a lighter PSP or DS where size and weight made a big difference as you had to lug them around

JoshWilding - 8/19/2009, 6:27 PM
UNMASKED: yeah, i saw it! i dont feel the need to trade in my PS3 (its the original first model - 60GB) because IMO it looks nicer than the slim model and if i ever want/need more than the 60Gb i can just buy a new hard drive for the PS3 which ill probably never do as i wont be downloadng movies (we dont have that service in the UK until November) as i prefer to have an actual movie collection, lol! i couldnt afford to swap it anyway - my PS3 cost £350 new, it stopped playing games and blu rays a few months ago and was 7 or 8 months out of warrenty so i had to pay £145 for a replacement from Sony so the PS3 ive got has already cost me nearly £500, lol!

Imran - 8/19/2009, 6:29 PM
Looks like the new one doesn't have the slick piano finish.. That'll probably put me off..

My Xbox 360 Elite just looks grey compared to the black PS3 because of the finish..

DANNY DEVITO FOR MOLE MAN!!! :)

DeVito is entitled to his opinion. I see where he is coming from. Bottom line is this, Burton took the comic and made it come alive. Nolan took the comic and made it believeable. It's comparing apples to oranges really.

I was expecting Danny to kiss ass in this interview. I was pleasantly surprised. What really makes me mad is when Batman Returns came out people said it was too dark, but when The Dark Knight came out people took their 4 year old kids to it and bought them Joker stuff.

I'm really trying to keep my PS3.(40GB)

I love the look of it and everything. I just feel that Sony raped the first PS3 owners with this new hardware. I mean how can you just make ALL of the previous PS3's obsolete????

That's what pisses me off!

Do you guys think the older PS3's will still live on? What about online play? Will it be different???

JoshWilding
JoshWilding - 8/19/2009, 6:48 PM
UNMASKED: as far as i know the only change is the look - those of us with the original PS3's (which is millions of people) wont be affected! if anything we're better off - this newer slim PS3 is obviously cheaper because Sony have found a way to produce the system cheaper (because they were at one point making a loss on them) and the parts in our consoles are probably better! i know that might sound like im contradicting myself as i said above that mine broke a few months ago but apparently that was a common problem with the first batch of PS3's because of it being new tech. Online play isnt going to change at all! You have the 40GB version which came out after my 60Gb version whic made mine obsolete in a sense - its definitely just the look thats changing so dont worry man! :)

UNMASKED: no problem! :)

i use my PS3 for everything - games, blu-ray, dvd, cd...so im happy with the original model because looking at it standing next to my TV of the same colour it looks stunning! not that theres anything wrong with the slim - i just prefer the original! its great news though because a new model and a cheaper price tag can only be good news for new and existing PS3 owners!

yeah, GoW 3 is gonna be EPIC! there are loads of PS3 exclusives i cant wait for - Uncharted 2 is probably the game im most looking forward to!

oh and feel free to add me on your PS3 - my User ID is joshw_24 - dont be offended if i dont reply right away - i dont currently have broadband so im using a neighbors wireless connection that doesnt always work, lol!

What I didnt like about Tim Burton is that he killed off characeters when Batman doesnt kill people, even though Batman does have the choice to save or not to save!

But killing off Joker in Batman was very stupid!

Tim Burton = Emo

I followed him just fine. He was saying that you can't compare Burton's movies with Nolan's. One being better then the other may be a matter of personal opinion for some, but for many they are both great films. I see them more as alternate realities. One in a world where things are more comic book like (Burton), the other is more a "what if it happened in our world" type (Nolan).

HE WAS AN AWSOME PENGUIN, I WONDER WHAT NOLAN WOULD DO WITH IT? EVEN THOUGH IT WAS AN OUT THERE IDEA TO MAKE PENGUIN A FREAK THE WAY HE WAS PORTRAYED IN BAT 2, I LIKED IT, BUT KNOWING NOLAN HE PROBABLLY WILL GO SOMEWHERE THATS SO LEFT FIELD AND CATCH US OFF GUARD AND WE'LL BE LIKE"OH DAM, I NEVER REALLY THOUGHT OF HIM THAT WAY, HEY THATS REALLY COOL"
