THE BATMAN 2 Working Title Could Hint At The Sequel's Villain(s) - Possible SPOILERS

A production listing for Matt Reeves' The Batman - Part II has revealed the sequel's new working title, which may support a popular fan theory surrounding the movie's villain...

The Batman - Part II is expected to begin shooting on May 29 in London, and a new production listing has revealed the sequel's updated working title.

The Batman - Part II will reportedly commence filming under the title "Semper Vigilans."

This translates to "Always Vigilant" or "Ever Watchful," fueling speculation that the movie will introduce The Court of Owls.

In the comics, the nursery rhyme associated with this shadowy organisation reads: “Beware The Court of Owls, that watches all the time, ruling Gotham from a shadowed perch, behind granite and lime. They watch you at your hearth, they watch you in your bed, speak not a whispered word of them, or they'll send the Talon for your head.”

It's certainly an intriguing possibility, but we already know that Matt Reeves' sequel will feature Harvey Dent (Sebastian Stan), as well as his wife Gilda (Scarlett Johansson) and father Christopher (yet to be cast).

Previous reports have claimed that the movie's plot "involves District Attorney Harvey Dent, Commissioner James Gordon (Jeffrey Wright), and Batman forming an uneasy alliance to bring down a serial killer and the city’s entrenched mafia power."

If you're a DC Comics fan, you'll likely be aware that this is the premise of The Long Halloween, which also influenced elements of Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight. While Reeves and co-writer Mattson Tomlin might have worked the Court of Owls into this storyline (Talon could be the killer?), it seems unlikely given the scope of the comic book arc and depth of the COO lore.

The listing also mentions Paul Dano (The Riddler) as being part of the returning cast.

During a new interview with Screen Rant, Andy Serkis (Alfred) spoke about the sequel's script. He didn't give much away, of course, but did drop a few vague hints about the direction of the story.

"I obviously can't say too much about the film other than that I am really excited about going back into the world and working with Matt Reeves again, who I've now worked with a number of times, and he's a dear friend, and Rob. And the script and the story and the new story really does speak to Matt as a human being and what he feels about life. Rob and he got on brilliantly. And I can't say any more than that, but yeah, the relationship continues to be one of a very close, slightly at odds, but beautiful relationship."

The Batman - Part II is set to hit theaters on October 1, 2027.

Robert Pattinson will return as Bruce Wayne/Batman, along with Jeffrey Wright as Jim Gordon, Andy Serkis as Alfred, Colin Farrell as The Penguin, and (possibly) Barry Keoghan as The Joker. Zoë Kravitz is not expected to reprise her role as Selina Kyle/Catwoman.

I want to see the court just as much as anyone, but both of these apply to Batman himself as well.

So they cut and paste The Dark Knight and hope people don't notice?

@DocSpock - Commissioner James Gordon, and Batman forming an uneasy alliance to bring down a serial killer and the city’s entrenched mafia power.

I mean if you remove Harvey Dent, that's basically the plot from the first movie...

@DocSpock - It's exasperating when they have so many great villians and decades of lore to draw from.

True. How cool would Man-Bat be? Hush, Hugo Strange, Deathstroke. So many.

@DocSpock - Joker pulling the strings but with Deathstroke as the physical villain Batman has to battle, would be nuts. Heck, I'd love an almost Arkham Asylum adaptation with Bat's trapped and forced to fight through his rogue's gallery of villains using brawn and his detective skills to survive and uncover where the map is that shows where Joker hid bombs all around Gotham, or something.

As a side note, I really hope they don't make Thomas Wayne the villain. I can definitely see them making Bruce discover that Thomas was a horrible human being, or something like in Superman.

That’s a cool working title!!.

I would love if the Court of Owls were the main villains of this film since I feel their vibe really fits the dark , stylized horror-noir take on Batman and his world in this…

However Reeves wanting to still ground the characters makes me think this won’t be the case but we’ll see.

Anyway , I liked The Batman quite a bit (aswell as The Penguin) so I hope this one turns out just as good if not better!!.

Too early to bring them him, in the comic when they first show up, Batman at this point where he thinks he knows gotham's in's and out's only to discover that the Owls have been doing their corrupt shit this whole time under his nose. We just got something like that in the last film and he still just starting out as Batman.

@HashTagSwagg - That's true but it's not essential for him to discover the Court of Owls later in his career.
Absolute Batman's bringing them in now and that's set in Batman's early years and is written by the same guy.

Please don't be Phantasm, a character that was introduced in an animated film (albeit a great one) and didn't make her first comic book appearance until 2020 shouldn't be the main villain.

@MotherGooseUPus - Literally the only CBM on the horizon I'm genuinely looking forward to. Kind of tired of Feige's approach to Spider-Man, but Brand New Day has promise at least, and Doomsday could be hit or miss.

In terms of 'things we haven't seen before'. To date, we still haven't had a full-throttle, live-action Two-Face.

'Batman Forever' reduced him to a one-dimentional, dim-witted, side-kick. 'The Dark Knight' gave us a solid Harvey Dent, but his transition to Two-Face was abrupt and screen time? Over-and-done in seconds.

If they're doing the character again - I hope we get the WHOLE characterisation.

'Batman The Animated Series' had a fraction of their running time (even as a two-parter) and they made a brilliant job of it.

Yeah, ok, could be fun. I'm REALLY looking forward to Gunn's take, though. I just want this gritty grounded take to be done, so we can get to our new Batman in the DCU.

I don’t buy that apparent plot synopsis since it just seems too reminiscent of the first film..

Also it just seems like some scooper was like if Sebastian Stan is playing Harvey Dent and ScarJo his wife Gilda then that means they must be doing Long Halloween which has already had elements of it borrowed by The Dark Knight so i don’t think Matt Reeves would retread that ground but we’ll see.

I wouldn’t mind Sebastian being Harvey though since it makes sense given the previous D.A died in the first movie.

Also, why can’t we get a Batman that captures the magic of the animated series. Most agree that’s the best rendition of the character so far.

Idk maybe get the guy from Brand New Day on these batman films. He seems to understand the assignment

It's honestly the only way that they can go with the character otherwise it'll just be another copy of previous versions

Give him some slack, he's new at this and he just needs to find his groove. He needs to let his directors have some creative freedom.

All we have seen from him is his Superman stuff. Once his little saga is done with, maybe he'll step back a bit. Either way, good things are coming from DC overall.

Never in the history of film have we gotten a Superman movie and a Batman movie in the same year.

All we can do is hope that it all works out well for the sake of the brand as a whole.

But I have complete faith in the abilities of Gunn and his track record proves that.

The only thing that I don't understand is that sure he has been saying that nothing gets the greenlight unless the script is good. Great idea but it restricts how many projects get to move forward. We don't have any word on what's coming out past 2027.

I think the Court of Owls would be a good follow up seeing how the first movie is addressing the corruption in Gotham politicians and authorities.
I just hope we get another good detective movie like the first one. Maybe a bit more Batman action beating up thugs/villains. 🤓
