The Batman Part II Star Robert Pattinson Says Sequel Is A "Really Radical Retelling Of Batman"

The Batman Part II star Robert Pattinson has said the upcoming sequel makes some big changes to the Dark Knight's world, hinting at a "radical retelling" of a character fans know so well.

The Batman took some big swings with the Dark Knight's mythos in 2022, but could Matt Reeves' upcoming sequel turn Bruce Wayne's world completely on its head?

There are already some wild theories online about the child we've seen on set potentially being Bruce's son and a new take on Robin. Meanwhile, potential villains have been named as everyone from Two-Face to Phantasm, The Court of Owls, and Victor Zsasz.

In a new interview, Robert Pattinson has teased Reeves' plans for Batman, and it sounds like we should brace ourselves for a bold new take on the Caped Crusader in this Elseworlds tale.

"It's just amazing," the actor says in the video below. "It’s quite a radical change to the script, and it’s cool that [WB] are behind it and DC. It’s just crazy. I think [Matt Reeves] is the only person who anyone would allow to do it because it’s, like, a really radical retelling of Batman. I think that people will be excited by it."

It sounds like something big is coming that won't necessarily line up with the comics. That always risks being controversial, though Reeves has earned the trust of fans after The Batman and The Penguin.

As a reminder, the filmmaker previously said that The Batman Part II does "something that pushes even further into the character of Bruce Wayne" and teased that his approach to the sequel's villain has "never really been done in a movie before."

What that means remains to be seen. What we do know from set photos is that Batman will battle the GCPD and that he's going to be left in mortal peril before Alfred Pennyworth steps in. Filming has, for now, wrapped in Glasgow, so it's unclear how much more we'll see from the movie ahead of its release in 2028 (which feels like a long time from now).

Directed by Matt Reeves from a script by him and Mattson Tomlin, The Batman Part II stars Robert Pattinson, Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan, Colin Farrell, Andy Serkis, Jeffrey Wright, Charles Dance, Jayme Lawson, Gil Perez-Abraham, Sebastian Koch, and Brian Tyree Henry.

The Batman Part II is set to be released in theaters on February 18, 2028.

It'll be nice to get something actually different for a change, as the vast majority of comic book movies are just copy-paste of each other.

@TheJok3r - for the record, they all touted the last one as different when in reality, it was just Nolan Batman plus Se7en the movie.

Of course I could be totally wrong about this but he doesn’t seem like the time of guy who would say things that is just hyperbole. Tell me if I’m wrong

@RolandD - He's not the only one who's said this; other actors and people involved with the movie have made similar comments. Batman movies are events, and Reeves was clearly taking his time for a good reason.

@TheJok3r - Excellent point. If this is all true and if it’s done well. Many the people who have complained about how long this movie has taken will likely take back their complaints. Not everyone mind you but I think he’ll be forgiven by a lot of people if he does something extraordinary.

@RolandD - Everyone always complains during the wait, be it with movies, video games, etc., but they all disappear once the product is actually released and lives up to its potential.

@RolandD - he’s known to kind of joke around and exaggerate things in interviews but it’s never about his work or the films itself so he indeed must be truly impressed by this film to say that.

@TheJok3r - True is except for those here who universally hate just about everything. 😂

@TheVisionary25 - Like when he jokingly said that he wasn’t going to work out for the first movie and then people took him seriously and then went into rages about it?😂

@TheJok3r - I'm not convinced he was taking his time for any reason other than struggling to crack where to take the character.

@McMurdo - I would rather someone take their time to get a project right over pushing it out the door to meet an arbitrary deadline.

@TheJok3r - Nolan had 3-4 years inbetween each movie. He’s been on record saying that it’s a shame that most comic book movies won’t get that luxury cuz now studios want to pump everything out so fast. He said they highly benefited from all the creators of the film growing by working on other projects and then coming back together for Batman years later.

Naturally, they will make Thomas Wayne a villain and an awful person rather than a world renowned surgeon who thought Bruce that all life is precious, lending to the rationale of his no kill rule (along with not wanting “to become like the criminals he brings to justice”). Yawn, predictable

On topic: Pattinson is giving me Reed Richards vibes in the above video. I would've loved to see him put in place of the character one day.

@Astroman - It’s been done to death. I’m lower middle class but hold zero ill will toward billionaires. That’s the politics of envy. And in political circles, the ones vilifying billionaires are multimillionaires who live in a reality far removed from ours

Definitely think he’s going to dive deeper into Martha’s Arkham side of the family are her psychosis. Dig into the deeper underpinnings of Batman legitimately being unwell mentally maybe and him inheriting that mental instability. That and a sprinkle of some Court of Owls lore.

@MisterBones - WHY DID YOU SAY THAT NAME
ObserverIO
ObserverIO - 9/6/2026, 5:25 PM
@MisterBones - Barbatos would be a good connective tissue between all of these things. You can deal with both the religious beliefs of the Court of Owls and the shared psychosis between Bruce and his Mom and still keep it grounded in reality.

If Martha is an Arkham then hallucinating the giant bat Barbatos is a congenital psychosis. Elizabeth Arkham had it and passed it down to Amadeus Arkham in the classic OGN Arkham Asylum: A Serious House On Serious Earth. Martha could have it and Bruce has had it since The Dark Knight Returns.
McMurdo
McMurdo - 9/6/2026, 9:53 PM
@MisterBones - That would actually be sick but I'm not confident Reeves can write a sequel that can explore that with any real justice to the character/story. Maybe on the surface that's the goal but I worry we don't truly get there. Hopefully I am wrong. He had a co writer this time though so maybe we get lucky.

I'm reeeeeally starting to think this one will introduce Robin. Maybe not "the classic origin" and honestly I don't think a costumed Robin will show up in THIS ONE, but I think it will end with Robin coming into the fold. God I hope so. Batman needs Robin more than he needs Joker.
Bucky74
Bucky74 - 9/6/2026, 1:48 PM
@BiffDitko - I like him having both. To me, no screen Batman has earned his “bones” until he’s punched his Joker. Robin can work too, but has to be done right
McMurdo
McMurdo - 9/6/2026, 9:54 PM
@BiffDitko - it would be nonsensical to go from the ending of the first film into this Batman employing a child vigilante. The only way it would work is if the child is acting of his own volition and Bruce feels forced to take him in to protect him.
BiffDitko
BiffDitko - 9/7/2026, 7:25 AM
@McMurdo - Well if the Court Of Owls are indeed a part, it could be VERY EASY to introduce Dick GRAYSON considering he ties into their plans.
Read the comic.

Pattinson is inherently interesting. I liked his first Batman and where they left the story. People need to be more open minded. “Comics purism” is silly because the mediums of paper and film are so different. Let creators take chances and push characters to new places. Part of the magic of Batman is that the character is pliable. He can be a detective or vigilante, or both, and a paranoid strategist, and his mental imbalances are part of what make him interesting. A man with no superpowers in a world that has meta humans has to be a bit nuts to run and gun with them, but he does.

Im still holding out a retelling of Mask of the Phantasm with Court of Owls vibes woven through. The police chasing Batman due to them mistaking the Phantasm for him? The Phantasm being a Reeves retcon of the Talon in some way.

Christopher Nolan's the Dark Knight Trilogy is the bar that no Batman film has yet to even sniff. Reeves has done a good job, but so far it has paled in comparison to all of Nolan's excellent Batman films.
