Following a couple of rather vague loglines, Warner Bros. has finally released an official, full-length synopsis for Matt Reeves' The Batman, and it makes for a very interesting read.

The breakdown teases The Caped Crusader's (Robert Pattinson) increasingly dangerous journey into the criminal underworld of Gotham as he attempts to rid the corrupt city of crime after a two-year stint in the cape and cowl. Most of the supporting characters are mentioned, including The Riddler (Paul Dano), who we've been led to believe would be the murderer Batman will be hunting over the course of the movie.

But what if there's another big bad for The Bat to contend with?

The second part of the synopsis mentions that the evidence will begin to lead The Dark Knight "closer to home," which may suggest that the real mastermind behind these brutal killings has yet to be unveiled.

"Two years of stalking the streets as the Batman (Robert Pattinson), striking fear into the hearts of criminals, has led Bruce Wayne deep into the shadows of Gotham City. With only a few trusted allies — Alfred Pennyworth (Andy Serkis), Lt. James Gordon (Jeffrey Wright) — amongst the city’s corrupt network of officials and high-profile figures, the lone vigilante has established himself as the sole embodiment of vengeance amongst his fellow citizens."

“When a killer targets Gotham’s elite with a series of sadistic machinations, a trail of cryptic clues sends the World’s Greatest Detective on an investigation into the underworld, where he encounters such characters as Selina Kyle/aka Catwoman (Zoë Kravitz), Oswald Cobblepot/aka the Penguin (Colin Farrell), Carmine Falcone (John Turturro), and Edward Nashton/aka the Riddler (Paul Dano). As the evidence begins to lead closer to home and the scale of the perpetrator’s plans becomes clear, Batman must forge new relationships, unmask the culprit, and bring justice to the abuse of power and corruption that has long plagued Gotham City.”

We might be reading too much into this, but it's certainly worth considering. After all, rumors that Eternals star Barry Keoghan is actually playing The Joker in the film have been picking up steam, with the actor's brother seemingly confirming the report in a since-deleted Facebook post.

@MediaMan - I actually read an interesting take on a potential end to the Nolan trilogy (before anything was confirmed) that involved batman investigating a series of murders with the victims being people claiming to have been investigating batman. Then at the end its revealed to be Alfred trying to protect Bruce. Never wanna see that in a legit batman movie but does sound interesting.

@Origame - Thanks. I'd never read that. I don't really think this is the direction Reeves is going in this movie, it's just the first thing that popped into my head. Then again- who knows?

@Origame - I agree. I will say it would be something that might be done in one of the books (maybe it already has been). I remember way back when Jarvis turned against the Avengers in the early Ultron days because he needed the money or something like that... although Alfred's relationship with Bruce is obviously is different.
