THE BATMAN Just Got Even More Complicated As New Report Points To It Being A Reboot...And Set In The DCEU

A new report claims to shed some light on what Matt Reeves and Warner Bros. has planned for The Batman and it sounds like the studio is taking a pretty unexpected approach to the franchise moving forward.

We've recently heard from reliable sources that Matt Reeves' The Batman will focus on a younger version of the Caped Crusader presumably set in the earlier days of the DCEU before he crossed paths with Superman and Wonder Woman. There have also been rumours that it will be a standalone adventure with no ties to the other movies and the situation remains rather confusing as a result.

Now, a new report from ElFanboy Podcast points to Warner Bros. taking a wait and see approach to The Batman and seeing how things go with it before deciding where it fits into the bigger picture.

"So essentially, they want to develop this Batman movie as if it is a reboot, as if it's all new. But they're not gonna make any overt statements about it, they're just gonna make a movie about a younger Batman, who - I believe it takes place in the past, which will create a backdoor for if they ever do want to cross-pollinate him with the other DC characters again. ... They're going to make Batman as his own standalone franchise, they're gonna basically start him over again to a degree, but they're going to leave a back door open so that, depending on how the next few DC  movies do, from there, they can decide which continuity he's a part of and whether or not they're gonna push forward on the shared concept and do more crossover movies."

Confused yet? Basically, The Batman will move away from the Ben Affleck version of the character by visiting the past and having the movie serve as a standalone adventure which isn't beholden to whatever is going on in the DCEU. What that means for the character in the present is hard to say but it sounds like Warner Bros. will wait and then have this new Batman become part of current franchises.

But also...I wish I could get the internet to filter out anything DCEU rlated for me...I just can't read anymore, they have no [frick]ing clue what they are doing and it's moving out of funny into straight up aggravating now!

@CLTMAN29 - It’s easy. Don’t click.

@CLTMAN29 - The only thing from keeping me from wanting to block anything DCEU related is because I'm still holding onto hope that WB will finally reboot the current DC live action film universe...

Especially with the recent merger with AT&T they can't allow the DCEU to keep hemorrhaging money, right? (...right!? Or maybe I'm wrong in trusting that they'll wise up even with new leaders in charge =/)

@grif - yeah at this point I don't even care anymore until I'm actually in the theater watching it

@grif - Yeah, at this point I don't care what they do...

I'm not gonna bother watching it because I'm so burned out. The only way they will get my attention back is if they announce a total reboot of the DCEU (which with the merger with AT&T I have some hope, but still) I have some doubts that will happen in a few years =/

Still waiting until Comic Con for any DCEU related news. That way this mess can be sorted out somehow.

@DeadWade213 - I want to do the same thing but the last time they "sorted things out" in terms of Batman, 11 months of will he wont he lunacy ensued.

I actually think it sounds smart. Means batman can do his own thing and crossover to any universe with little trouble.
Origame
Origame - 6/23/2018, 6:12 AM
@CoolCipher - It's in the past. Not a new universe (at least not yet). My guess is that assuming how well this does, they may have Flashpoint be involved so this younger Batman is then retconned into the present day.
CaptainElrond
CaptainElrond - 6/23/2018, 6:15 AM
@Origame - Can't say it's not a logical choice.
four20smoke
four20smoke - 6/23/2018, 6:16 AM
@CoolCipher - i mean its really what they are doing with wonder woman...they can keep making her stuff in the past to not have to explicitly tie it in to the dceu characters. They are in 84 now so they have at least 30 more years of tales for her that would be none JL related. Sucks because if she was this active, you would think her and younger batman could have hooked up at some point...
CaptainElrond
CaptainElrond - 6/23/2018, 6:20 AM
@four20smoke - I think it's a little different. I mean wonderwoman has the ww1 picture and bruce mentioning steve trevor.

four20smoke
four20smoke - 6/23/2018, 6:23 AM
@CoolCipher - not really, they also mentioned batman being an urban myth and references to his past adventures with penguin and whatever happened with Robin. They can flesh all that out plus more
CaptainElrond
CaptainElrond - 6/23/2018, 6:27 AM
@four20smoke - Well thats different...thats vague...they pretty much confirmed the storyline of wonderwoman in jl.
TheRose
TheRose - 6/23/2018, 6:29 AM
@CoolCipher - I'm with you on this. If nothing else, BvS established the idea that Bruse has been doing this for a while and he spent years of battling in Gotham with (presumably) a bat family. I'd be down to see Bruce before Joker kills Robin. Maybe then he'd be less of a porrly executed Dark Knight Returns.
CaptainElrond
CaptainElrond - 6/23/2018, 6:30 AM
@TheRose - I actually hope they just ignore the dceu and make there own path.
Battabing
Battabing - 6/23/2018, 6:52 AM
@Origame - There's 20 years of history we don't know about the DCEU Batman. They're just treating it like Wonder Woman; giving us a peak into the Black Dossier.
four20smoke
four20smoke - 6/23/2018, 7:00 AM
@TheRose -i think you are actually making my point. Some sort of past deeds have been referenced for the bat. They can tell these tales in the past without having them connect directly to the current dceu if they want. Not a bad idea i suppose...current time can be to have these great universe expanding stories with huge threats and the past can be character specific stories. They cant do this with flash or superman but any character they havent introduced yet they can, like MM and GL. They can even cross pollinate them im the past. The only one they cant is batman and WM. Everyone else can potentially have met at some point in the past.
TheRose
TheRose - 6/23/2018, 9:18 AM
@four20smoke - DC has always had a knack with past and future events. Time travel is an achievable science, so we get stories that span all time. Vandal Savage and the dawn of man, the legacy of the Greek gods, Jonah Hex and the Wild West, Etrigan and the age of Arthur. You could examine the colorful dawn of heroes with the Justice Society set in the 60s, or explore the mistakes of the Guardians as they made the Lantern Corps. Of course, look to the future with the Legion of Superheroes and Batman Beyond.

Man...if they do this, Vandal Savage could become THE big bad I've been waiting to see DC pull off. The man pulling the strings across the entirety of time!!
four20smoke
four20smoke - 6/23/2018, 10:49 AM
@TheRose - exactly!! DC could potentially do something truly epic if they are able to pull something like this off. They could have the opportunity to explore these past events and as you mention, just tie in small things like VS and then if things go right they can incorporate them into a proper universe.

Is this anything new? I figured this was already what they were going to do when the DCEU imploded: new take on Batman, wait and see about crossing over in the future.
DeadWade213
DeadWade213 - 6/23/2018, 6:09 AM
Until I see Ben Affleck go on any social media website and announce he's done with his role as Batman, none of this means anything.
Origame
Origame - 6/23/2018, 6:10 AM
So...it's a soft reboot then? One that's keeping in mind that it could still be set in the DCEU? I'm fine with DC bashing, but this doesn't sound any more complicated than what we already thought with the potential Flashpoint movie.
Spagett
Spagett - 6/23/2018, 6:11 AM
Just make a flashpoint movie, have Ben at the start talking to Barry, Then he does a flashpoint meme and everything sucks, Then at the end of the movie, Barry fixes it. Everything seems pretty normal when he gets back to the future. He goes to the batcave to see Bruce to give him the Thomas Wayne letter, Bruce turns around and it's some 29 year old dude. Badda-bing Budda-boom, DCEU fixed, Batman young, great gag.
CaptainElrond
CaptainElrond - 6/23/2018, 6:13 AM
@Spagett - I'm more of a full reboot type guy, but this would work actually pretty well. Still it owuld mean keeping ezra's millers flash..err.
Origame
Origame - 6/23/2018, 6:14 AM
@Spagett - Not sure Affleck would want to be part of that, but other than that, simple. Especially since they can keep what worked like WW.
Spagett
Spagett - 6/23/2018, 6:23 AM
@CoolCipher - Okay well...Barry gets home, "Whooo-weee" That was one crazy adventure". *Pulls off his mask and looks in the mirror* He's a different actor. *Looks shocked* Badda-bing Budda-boom, DCEU fixed, Flash better, great gag.
