THE BATMAN Star Colin Farrell Reveals New Details About THE PENGUIN Spinoff Including Show's Opening Scene

The Batman star Colin Farrell has shared some exciting new details about The Penguin TV series coming to HBO Max, revealing when the series takes place and even what the first scene will entail...

The Batman was a hit for Warner Bros. when it arrived in theaters earlier this year, so it's no wonder the studio is looking to capitalise on that by expanding the franchise on the small screen.

Initially, the plan was for an HBO Max TV series to focus on a corrupt cop in Gotham City during the Dark Knight's "Year One." That's since changed, with a show about The Penguin up first and something Arkham Asylum-related also on the horizon. Colin Farrell will reprise his role in the former, and we now have some very exciting new details on the project.

"It starts about a week after 'The Batman' ends," the actor confirms in the video below. "So Gotham is still somewhat underwater."

"I read the first script of the first episode and it opens up with [Oswald Cobblepott] feet splashing through the water in Falcone’s office," he continues, "which even just that alone when I read it I was like, 'Ahh, geez.'"

Lauren LeFranc is writing the untitled series, and Farrell would go on to share high praise for the work she's been doing. "It’s lovely. It’s so well written. Lauren LeFranc has done an extraordinary job. She’s writing the whole thing and showrunning it. She’s formidable and it’s a very exciting prospect."

It's interesting that The Penguin show picks up in the immediate aftermath of The Batman, though we've known from the start it would chronicle his rise to power in Gotham.

We can't imagine Robert Pattinson's Caped Crusader won't make some sort of cameo appearance, anyway, especially as this has all the makings of an event series that will inform the planned big screen sequel in a major way. That's still being written, of course, and there's currently no word on a release date.

Check out Farrell's comments in full below along with our own interviews with Jeffrey Wright, Paul Dano, and producer Dylan Clarke.
