Why Marlon Wayans Didn't End Up Playing Robin!

io9 did an interview with Marlon Wayans and Channing Tatum about their upcoming movie "GI Joe: Rise Of Cobra." They had some pretty interesting(and pretty silly!) things to say! Wayans in particular, about nearly playing a certain Boy Wonder..

From io9..

You guys had great chemistry in the film. Were there any funny moments we didn't get to see of you two, goofing off as a couple of 'Joes?'

Marlon Wayans: There's some stuff, but we pretty much stuck to the script.

So you guys are toys now...

Wayans: I'm about to go raid Hasbro. I saw this one doll that had the accelerator suit. It's like RoboCop. It was running. I was like, "I need this for my son."

Speaking of RoboCop and science fiction, you guys are really growing in this genre. Were there any superheroes that you two were rumored to play, that didn't end up being true?

Wayans: I was actually supposed to play Robin, in "Batman Returns," about 15 years ago. But there was too many characters. I was cast, I was paid and everything. I still get residual checks. Tim Burton didn't wind up doing three. Joel Schumacher did it and he had a different vision for who Robin was. So he hired Chris O' Donnell.

Are you happy that you didn't wind up being Robin in that movie?

Wayans: No, look — I get why they picked Chris O' Donnell, because it would be messed up to have Batman and you've got Robin, and his bulge is somewhat bigger than Batman's. Batman would have a serious problem with that.

Channing Tatum: [Laughs] I was rumored to play Captain America. Actually, I would love to play him, but I've read Will Smith is going to do it.(???)

Are there and superheroes you would like to play in the future, since you didn't get to play Robin and you don't think you're up for Captain America?

Tatum: I want to get recast as Snake Eyes.

Wayans: I would like to do the Mask. Jim Carrey did one, Jamie Kennedy did two. I would like to do three.

Tatum: There's a darker superhero called Plucker. I want to do that, badly. I'm trying to set it up now. [Channing is linked to this project as the producer].

Wayans: I want to play Plastic Man — that would be fun too....

In the movie...

Wayans: I want to play the Brown Hornet, from Fat Albert. I want to play the Brown Hornet and be buff on top, and just have really skinny legs. I could get Tracy Morgan to play Stinger.(????)

You guys do a lot of ridiculous stuff in G.I. Joe, what was your favorite moment?

Wayans: Right here [points to Tatum]. We had a great time filming together. On set, off set....

Really? That was more fun that driving a motorcycle through the rain, with sunglasses on?

Tatum: My Top Gun moment? [Laughs].

Wayans: That was so ultimate sexy. I was so like, "oh I wish that was me!" But see here's the difference: White guys in the rain look cool, if I was in the rain my afro would all small, skin would be all dry, it would not be a good site.

The reason he most likely didnt play robin was because he is black. I dont ever recall a black robin in any comic book. If im wrong then someone go ahead and fix me. But thats just what i think
Batmanknight
Batmanknight - 8/5/2009, 7:06 AM
I think he would've been an alright Robin, he's not a terrible actor but the whole white/black thing came into play and since Robin was never black they didn't want people to not like it. Someone like Burton would do it but not Shumacher. But O'Donnel did a good job for that kind of Batman.

Tatum sounds like a tool and he wouldn't be a good Captain America

Marlon Wayans as Robin? What were they trying to do, give Batman Forever some Webster appeal?
MarkCassidy
MarkCassidy - 8/5/2009, 7:28 AM
O'Donnel sucked as Robin, he sucks in everything because hes an annoying little git!

I would rather have had Wayans, and that's saying something! The race issue is a factor..only because i don't like such drastic changes in the source..but Shumaker made so many anyway, what difference would it have made?

I actually think Will Smith would be a great Cap!

sorry....if will smith is captain america i want jean claude van dam playing the black panther
MarkCassidy
MarkCassidy - 8/5/2009, 7:40 AM
Why? Van Damme is shit? Shouldn't that be the most important thing? Cap is an American, so is Will Smith. He's also the best actor for the job, the dude bleeds red white and blue!..He just happens to be a black man. Its a pretty radical change, but to be honest, i could live with it..only because hes a better candidate for the role than any white guy i have heard yet.

I realize its never going to happen, but i really could see it working.
MarkCassidy
MarkCassidy - 8/5/2009, 7:51 AM
I know its a big departure but Smith is just so perfect for the role! I don;t want to see it really, but ill tell you this, i would be happier with Smith than Jason [frick]ing Lewis!..regardless of the [frick] you to the comics.

this thing was unfunny and stupid. im betting they had a private makeout session afterwards. ridiculous

the character of robin in batman returns was not necessarily robin. his name was "the kid" and he was only gonna help batman out on the side, not as a full partner with a costume etc...kinda like a street wise kid who gives batman info and stuff. similiar to shia leboufs character in i robot or constantine. he was never actually referred to as robin or even given a name like dick grayson. thats tim burton for ya. as for batman and robin at that point they obviously went a different direction than burton which is why he was not cast, race had nothing to do with it.

i would be alright with will smith as cap. as ROR said, wont happen, but id still see it.

THEHAWK - 8/5/2009, 9:49 AM
I would like to see Smith as Cap. He is the best out of everyone listed, but it probably won't happen for a couple of reasons, the main of which would be that it is a major departure from the comics.

Anyone heard anything about Hancock 2?
icebergslick
icebergslick - 8/5/2009, 10:44 AM
Haven't heard anything about Hancock 2. Looking forward to it though. Wayans and Tatum look like they have a good buddy/buddy vibe for this G.I.JOE flick. I might just give it a chance. Not expecting anything great though.

As for Cap, I love Will Smith as an actor, but I hope they stay true to the Marvel character and make him caucasion. Case being, I always thought Cap was the biggest slap in the face to the Nazi's he fought because their dream of a super race (blonde hair, blue eyes) is exactly what we (AMERICA) sent over there to put our foot in their A$$!!!! Peace to the comicbookmovie.com community.

Eh, Bjious, no he's not.

Channing Tatum is awful.

Thats true icebergslick , i actually never thought about it that way! Yeah i know Smith can't be Cap, but think about all of his qualities aside from being a different skin tone! You can't get anymore all American. He's got a huge build and is great in action roles. He has also proven hes a great dramatic actor. I would sure as hell follow him into battle!

none of them have that all american boy quality. i agree with iceberg that smith would be great, but an arian god basically stickin it to the jackass nazis is the way to go.

I like Will Smith and he seems very patriotic, but I don't want such a drastic change in the origin of Cap, I know that Smith could do it justice but there would be so much of a backlash from the comic community it would be ridiculous.

Will Smith is GOOD and showed in HANCOCK that he can pull the superhero thing off as well. Let's keep CAP white especially if he's going to be Steve Rogers....I hate it when they mess with the uniforms. I'll wait for G.I.Joe to hit DVD I just cant see how WAYANS and his over the top clown act isnt going to take away from the movie. Maybe Im expecting too much from the movie in the first place...if it's geared more towards kids then it should do fine. Otherwise WAYANS must not be on the screen that much for the movie to have a somewhat serious believeable feel.

I just dont understand why they cast this CLOWN...I'll admit I've never read a G.I.Joe comicbook and I've only seen a few cartoons. My brother did have the G.I.Joe with the Kung Fu grip and I had BULLETMAN...OH YEA. Back to Wayans something about them just get under my skin I HATE ALL OF THEIR MOVIES. They're all way to over the top with their girly little voices.

So to be honest I really dont care how G.I. ends up it just looks like it has promise. I guess if there's a part2 they'll cast Gary Coleman and Andrew Dice Clay.

I guess O'Donnell SUCKED as Robin along with everyone and everything else about that train wreck. If and when they cast another Robin put him in his TeeN TITANS TIGHTS AND CAST SOMEONE UNDER THE AGE OF 21.IF HE'S OLDER OR LOOKING BATMAN IN THE FACE HE'S NOT ROBIN(THE BOY WONDER)ANYMORE HE'S FREAKING NIGHTWING!!!
