BIRDS OF PREY Director Cathy Yan Has Plans For A Sequel Exploring Harley Quinn's Relationship With Poison Ivy

Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey didn't make the biggest of impacts at the box office, but as it now looks to find new life on VOD platforms, director Cathy Yan has told The Wrap that she already has an idea for a sequel should it happen. It's obviously very early days on that front, but this is something bound to get comic book fans excited.

"I would love to see Poison Ivy and I would certainly love to see the relationship between Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy," the filmmaker told the trade, explaining that their romance would be a big part of the follow-up. We're not sure where that leads the Birds of Prey, of course, but those are characters who will presumably headline their own spinoff somewhere down the line.

Asked whether she thinks a sequel revolving around Harley Quinn will actually happen, Yan added: "I don’t know — I think people aren’t ready to let go of Harley Quinn quite yet and you know, Margot I don’t think is ready to let go of Harley Quinn yet either, so… hopefully."

The character is, of course, set to appear in James Gunn's The Suicide Squad, so we are going to see more of her before too long. Given the somewhat standalone nature of the DC Extended Universe these days, though, it's doubtful that the return of Task Force X to the big screen will do much to set the stage for whatever Warner Bros. has planned next for Harley Quinn.

It would be no bad thing to see Yan get the chance to explore Harley's budding romance with Ivy, though, and we'll just have to keep our fingers cross that happens somewhere down the line.

What do you guys think?

I’m good. I hope Gunn reboots the character to something much closer to the animated series from the 90s. I’m just not interested in this new version of Harley and am already sick of her.

@SpideyPuffsMJ - if they do a green arrow movie, for a sequel they should keep this black canary though

@dracula - Absolutely 100%.

Now that Stephen Amell is gone, I'd love to see Charlie Hunnam as Oliver Queen and would be curious to see the interplay between him and Jurnee Smollett-Bell's Black Canary with good dialogue and writing.

@demery - Charlie Hunnam would be great, although they would probably get someone younger

@demery @dracula - he's shit on CBMs numerous times in the past, so I doubt it. Alexander Ludwig maybe?

@inkniron - Dont remember seeing him in anything, but if he is good, then that would be fine and in a few years, he would be the right age

@dracula - He's great in Vikings, to me. He also has a bit part in Bad Boys for life from what I understand.

I guess they could do that. Chuck Catwoman in there for the [frick] of it and show GC Sirens’ origins.

Then make the ending to this bizarre ass trilogy GCS vs BOP lol
dracula
dracula - 4/4/2020, 6:58 PM
@PicolasCage - doubt it will happen

Ironic how she is mentioning it now after BoP didn't become a hit at the box office, this brings the question: Why didn't you bring Ivy and the Sirens from the start instead of the weird movie we ended up with?
dracula
dracula - 4/4/2020, 6:57 PM
that would be cool but unless on demand somehow gives it a massive boost in sales it's not gonna happen, sure Shazam didn't have a massive box office haul, but it had a smaller budget, made more money and a great critical response

@dracula - Shazam had a bigger budget.

I'd rather have a Harley and Ivy team up movie than a sequel to whatever movie shes in next.

BoP was actually good so I wouldnt mind a sequel to that...without Harley.

@Himura - agree, but considering everything, doubt it will happen
