BLADE Star Mahershala Ali Shares Promising Update On MCU Reboot: "We’ll Be Back At It Relatively Soon"

Despite the (supposed) behind-the-scenes drama negatively impacting Marvel Studios' plans to bring Blade back to the screen, star Mahershala Ali has shared a promising production update...

It may seem hard to believe, but it's been over four years since Marvel Studios first announced plans for a Blade reboot starring Mahershala Ali during San Diego Comic-Con, and if reports are accurate, the project has been plagued by production woes ever since.

A recent Variety exposé outlined some of the (supposed) issues Marvel Studios has been dealing with over the past while, and the studio was said to be having a hard time nailing down Blade's story (which isn't exactly a major revelation given the amount of writers and directors that have been attached at various points). It was also claimed that star Mahershala Ali threatened to away from the project at one point due to frustrations with the script.

Apparently, some early drafts saw Ali's new take on the Daywalker "relegated to third or fourth lead" in his own movie, and while this has been disputed by a writer who worked on a draft prior to the strikes (more here), it's clear that this production has been anything but plain sailing.

However, it seems things may have turned a corner.

During a new interview with EW, Ali shared a positive update on the project, and the actor sounds confident that filming will be ready to begin fairly soon.

“We’re working on it. That’s the best I could tell you. I’m really encouraged with the direction of the project. I think we’ll be back at it relatively soon.”

“I’m sincerely encouraged in terms of where things are at and who’s on board and who’s leading the way as far as the writing of the script and the directing and all that,” he added. “So that’s the extent of what I can tell you.”

Production was further impacted by the Hollywood strikes, and Marvel pushed the movie back to Nov. 7, 2025. Following numerous drafts and screenwriters, Logan and Alien: Covenant scribe Michael Green recently signed on to pen the script.

Yann Demange (who stepped in to replace Tariq earlier this year) is still on board to direct, and has previously confirmed that the movie will indeed be rated R.

"I'm excited to show a kind of ruthlessness, a roughness he has, that allows him to walk the earth in a particular way. I love him for that," said the filmmaker. "He’s got a dignity and integrity, but there is a ferocity there that he usually keeps under the surface. I want to unleash that and put it on the screen."

Blade will also star Aaron Pierre, Delroy Lindo, and Mia Goth.

Hopefully, his husband and daughter will be the focal points of this as the original creators intended.

@Batmangina - Husband?

@Urubrodi - Are you not a true fan? Gay Blade and his God Level Daughter were rumored to be the driving force behind this project's multiple bed shittings and false starts.

Batmangina - 12/5/2023, 8:28 PM
@Ryguy88 - Agreed. Watched Blade Trinity last week and HHH being the only gay vampire just felt so unrealistic.

@Batmangina - I heard about the daughter wasn't aware that a gay Blade was also a thing in an earlier script. Damn good riddance.

@Batmangina - everyone knows vampires are at least 40X more likely to be gay

Man, that's frustrating. I kinda wish Blade was like JOKER or The Batman elseworld stories at DC.
Let the dude breath because, at this point, I get why there are script issues; they're trying to tie it naturally into the 50 or so films Marvel has put out already.

Nothing will beat Wesley Snipes in Blade's opening scene with the blood sprinklers. And Blade II? Masterpiece.
Blade 3? Reynolds should probably be more embarrassed of that film than Green Lantern....

@lazlodaytona - I really do not get the hate towards Blade Trinity, also Ryan Reynolds was good otherwise very dull performance by Snipe(guess he was pissed with introduction of Biel and Reynolds)

@MochaKing - the producer & Director left blade trinity Snipes wasnt happy with the new regime also he didnt get along with Reynolds they shot their scenes separatedly. Snipe only did the blade3 to fulfill his 3pix contract

@MochaKing - To me it wasn't a good film but I do agree with you that Reynolds was good. That scene when he's captured and all those smart-alecky comments he said was freakin' funny.
You're right, Snipes was ticked about that. So much so that he's not in the movie as much you think. He'd get angry and just sit in his trailer. So, Goyer was forced to use the stunt double a LOT. The whole production was a mess due to Snipes.

@lazlodaytona - No not a good film. But it's fun, it still has rewatch appeal for me. Like Blade 1 and 2. Some story beats were honed in, but overall not the worse in level of Ant Man 3 or some of the Sony duds.

I really want to be optimistic about this but right now I can't.. too.kuch drama behind the scenes. I hope Ali is right but to quote a great movie.. "I'll believe it when me shit turns purple and smells like rainbow sherbet "

@lazlodaytona - Well now you're just making me blush 😊. That's a quote from "Super Troopers" in which Brian Cox played Captain O'Hagen. If you haven't seen it first flog yourself for your insolence and then head over to your nearest Blockbuster Video and pick up a copy right meow!

@lazlodaytona - Welp, ya gotta do what ya gotta do. I think the only remaining one has been turned into a B 'n B so you can spend the night. Don't forget to stock up on microwave popcorn and giant-sized Twizzlers 😉.

@StSteven - what a great vacation spot.

You ever watch "Jean Claude Van Johnson" on Prime. It's an awesome, 1 season series with many funny moments. I believe it's the last episode that has a very funny Blockbuster joke in it. Well worth the watch.
StSteven
StSteven - 12/7/2023, 4:47 PM
@lazlodaytona - Haven't seen it but I'll have to check it out. As it is my current "TV" intake is about half an hour at the end of the night and restricted to things my kids won't throw a fit over. Late night shows during the week usually do the trick as they usually make the kids fall to sleep. 😉

@StSteven - alright, cool. if u were ever a fan of the 80s action hero or the early 90s, you'll like thee show.
Hope u can get some time to check it out.

StSteven - 12/8/2023, 5:14 PM
@lazlodaytona - Oh, yeah, I totally grew up on that stuff (pretty much "The Expendables" cast before they started add the young people to the team). Every once in a while I'm allowed to use my "Daddy Swagger" to watch what I want, so I'll keep that show in mind. I'm pretty sure we have Prime currently, although it's hard to keep track of what streaming services we have because we get all the good deals on them through our various credit cards so they're always changing. Guess I'll have to break down and ask my wife. 🥺

By 2025 Gunn's DCU will be kicked off and become successful because of great hiring on both sides of the camera

Marvel will continue the flops if the mediocre products keep coming.

Disney's Blade is turning into The Flash. Four years will turn into SIX years and 8 different directors until a lackluster script is made leading to a underwhelming and undeserved finished product that will have it's lead take a backseat in his own movie.

At least we still have Blade and Blade II to rewatch.
