DC's DARK NIGHTS: METAL Is Bigger Than Anyone Imagined And There'll Be Endless Surprises To Come

It seems DC Comics' Dark Nights: Metal crossover series is bigger than anyone could've initially predicted as it will feature a fan favorite Neil Gaiman created character playing a crucial role.

It's not often that a comic publisher releases the last page of the first issue of a major crossover event before it actually goes on sale, but that's exactly what DC Comics is doing...and boy is the reveal a doozy!  It seems Neil Gaiman's Dream aka The Sandman will play a key role in Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo's Dark Nights: Metal limited series.

In an interview with the Washington Post that went live earlier this morning, Scott Snyder stated that Gaiman told him the following when he explained Dream's role in Dark Nights: Metal.

"'I love it. Go for it.'   I was so excited [to hear that from Neil]. It was one of the greatest days of my professional life.  [Gaiman] couldn’t have been more generous. I just want to say thank you to him for sharing such an incredibly special character with us. It’s literally one of the best moments of my career, to be able to get to write a character that meant so much to me growing up and still does."

Dark Nights: Metal #1 goes on sale this Wednesday with a retail price of $4.99.

@TheFamousJMC - It's only for the miniseries, though, and I thought I read that because the demand was so high for issue 1, they're reducing the price by a dollar for the rest of the series.

@GAThrawnIGF - I just don't get the price charged for a product that is barely in demand. Comics were a luxury for me in the 90s at $1.25 - this level of inflation is just crazy. No wonder they don't sell like they used to. Unsustainable business model.

So... wait, so The New 52's Justice League Dark acted as a prelude to Preludes and now we have Daniel confirmed as the post-Flashpoint Dream and the map of the multiverse shows that the realms of The Endless are beyond The Bleed, so....

Does that all mean that the events of Neil Gaiman's Sandman are kinda cyclic and Daniel will be Dream for a reboot of those events? 'Cause that's pretty cool. I'd be up for a canonised reboot of those characters and events, in Rebirth, to a degree.

Also, this Dark Nights: Metal seems really in keeping with the themes of Rebirth (in that it is addressing comics' Dark Age and attempting to move past it and reconcile it with the lighter and more-fun modern age). Having Sandman involved as well as Watchmen is very interesting and a very, very cool move indeed.

It makes me wonder what else we are gonna see, in Dark Nights: Metal.

Maybe they could just throw in all the bad events that Batman had to endure in the Dark Age. Maybe they'll cripple Barbara Gordon again (The Killing Joke), kill Jason Todd again (A Death in the Family), burn down Wayne Manor and have Alfred keel over from a stroke at the scene (Dark Knight Returns), etc. etc. Throw an Earthquake and a plague in there and we're good to go.
They would have to make it all better at the end, though. Uncripple Babs again, bring Jason back to life again, rebuild Wayne Manor and have Alfred recover from his stroke, etc.
Although, maybe they do have some lasting surprises up their sleeves.
Maybe they'll do something like reveal Bruce Wayne's identity and have the world think that Batman is dead, due to the body of one of the Dark Knights of the Dark Multiverse, so that he can marry Catwoman and start a new life abroad, Dark Knight Rises style.
Who knows?
