Man of Steel came out three years ago and it divided critics in half, because of the all cgi explosive third act and some of it was the editing and the pacing, now after it came out, fans who loved that movie supported it and even had arguments with people who didn't like it(Yes, there was a Twitter trend that said ‘Man Of Steel Sucks!’ Back then) but the fans supporting it were the ones who have tried to give a band aid to that movie,it's like supporting and dragging a drunk loved one who has so much more potential and didn't try enough the first time,(I was one of the fans who supported it so it was tiring and exhausting trying to defend it),as well that you hope they can pull it off the second time with Batman v Superman Dawn of Justice. They showed promise in the coming months towards filming. They casted Ben Affleck as Batman, they hired Chris Terrio to rewrite the script,it's amazing how much they have learned from the mistakes of Man of Steel and the trailers showed BIG promises.
But as we have seen the negative reviews for BvS (33% on rotten tomatoes is pretty telling) It looks like fans and audiences for the most part will be on that area where they will be the ones that carry good word of mouth and not critics, I think when most people see it today,it will probably change and maybe audiences might love it more than critics. But the fact is fans who love BvS and MOS will have to carry that franchise and frankly to be honest,I believe it shouldn't be carried by them,it should be carried by itself and how it promises a new Superhero universe. Seeing your loved one fail on their promises and fail again hurts you even more as a person who supported and as part of the CBM community, believing that a sequel would be very interesting.
Someone said that movies like Blade Runner,Watchmen and others were initially negative and eventually it became a classic, I agree with his points but here's the main problem here, they worked as standalone movies that never needed to set up a franchise. BvS needed to set up the Justice League, introduce Batman and develop Superman in 2hrs 30 minutes (with an Extended Cut that 30 minutes longer) and frankly, this wasn't the right platform to do it as you risk alienating a chunk of the audience who's used to Marvel Superhero movies.I'm asking fans who loved and liked the movie to not go through that process of trying to defend a movie amongst a horde of critics and people who didn't have the same feelings about the film you did. If you love it and like it,GREAT! But don't attack people who didn't. We are all better than that.
But as a reasonable conclusion I think what will happen after this is I think BvS will hit a billion or VERY close to it, but that's it, I also think it's time to put Zack Snyder from the directing chair and put him on as a producer, we all gave Zack Snyder a chance to do better and he didn't as a storyteller. I think Justice League will still happen with Zack directing, but after reading a recent rumour that George Miller producing Justice League and then seeing these negative reviews,I now think what's best is George Miller take over the director's chair for Justice League or maybe Justice League Part 2. I think Zack Snyder should stay on as a producer and part of the DC brain trust and directing the path it takes...But I think from what we have seen with MOS and BvS,Zack should be on a overseer type role instead directing. What shouldn't happen is another reboot because god knows we need another reboot(*sarcasm*)
This may be just me,but to be honest I'm tired of defending a film that should really stand on its own. It should not be a cult classic to set up a universe,it should be a movie that is different from Marvel but everyone loved. I'm very disappointed to say it isn't.
I have been negative on this editorial but it's only because I love the DC lore a little too much. Batman v Superman is DCs Iron Man 2 and I think it needed that, but we deserve a better storyteller that can tell a story that's powerful and let's not mistake this: Batman v Superman has got a lot of great stuff in it, just as a movie;it wasn't cohesive and it proves that Zack Snyder shouldn't direct these films nor should the editor as they have definitely kept the same editor from MOS so fire that editor and keep Snyder to producing role.
