In the Marvel Universe's latest possible future, the world is still haunted by H-Day, a battle with the artificial intelligence Ultron that resulted in the deaths of many heroes.

The elderly Steve Rogers was recruited by Luke Cage, who formed an underground resistance called the Defenders to fight against totalitarian forces. Steve retook the Super-Soldier Serum and became Captain America once more, recruiting Ms. Marvel, Thor, a new Hawkeye and Tony Stark, now housed in a robotic body, to his cause.

James Stark, the son of Iron Man and the Wasp, has been corrupted by his mentor, who was revealed to be the Red Skull in disguise. With James' help, the Red Skull launched a government coup, killing the U.S. President and battling the Avengers in Washington, DC.

During the battle, the Red Skull unleashed his secret weapon: the Hulk!

Avengers: Twilight #6 begins with Thor taking on the Jade Giant in a battle which leaves chaos and destruction across the entire country. Captain America, meanwhile, is overpowered by the Skull and, in a tense confrontation with his son, Tony remembers what happened to The Wasp.

He hid his wife in a ring they left to James when they knew their time was nearly up and, with that, Janet Van Dyne returns (and she hasn't aged a day). Going giant-sized, she stops the Red Skull's nuke from dropping on the capital but is wounded by the villain.

Tony, Janet, and James are reunited, and Cap is impaled on a pole bearing the American flag. However, his Defenders have made sure the villain's gloating comments are being broadcast, opening the public's eyes to what's really going on.

With some help from James, Steve defeats his oldest foe by slicing him in half with his shield. As the Nazi's new robotic body prepares to self-destruct, James rockets him into the upper atmosphere, only for his father to take his place in an explosive heroic sacrifice.

Janet saves Cap and Thor uses Mjolnir to hold The Hulk deep at the bottom of the ocean, drowning and killing the Skull's out-of-control weapon.

Later, Steve and Janet catch up and we learn James is rebuilding Avengers Mansion as the new Iron Man. Thor returns to Asgard where Loki admits he manipulated events to reunite his brother with The Avengers (in a rare heroic act) and, in Valhalla, the God of Thunder has enlisted his father to ensure Tony and Bruce Banner find a place in the Asgardian afterlife.

We end on a positive note with a hint Earth's Mightiest Heroes will assemble again. Check out some highlights from Avengers: Twilight #6 below.
