COMICS: Marvel Announces New SQUADRON SUPREME Ongoing Series

The Avengers won't be the only Marvel super-team to get an overhaul in the aftermath of Secret Wars, as we'll also be introduced to a new incarnation of Squadron Supreme (remember them?) from writer James Robinson and artist Leonard Kirk. Click on for more...

The original Squadron Supreme were basically Marvel's version of DC's JLA. The team-members were from the parallel Earth-712, and the roster was made up of Hyperion, Nighthawk, Dr Spectrum, Amphibian, Power Princess, Whizzer and Skrullian Skymaster. At least some of those guys - or rather, versions of some of those guys - will be back for this new ongoing series from James Robinson.

These characters will all be pulled from the various worlds destroyed as a result of Battleworld, so we'll see: Great Society's Doctor Spectrum, the Nighthawk from Supreme Power, Blur from the New Universe's DP 7, and the Hyperion featured in Jonathan Hickman's Avengers run.

Below you can check out the cover to Squadron Supreme #1 by Alex Ross, and find out what Robinson has to say about the characters.

"In terms of the characters, their attitude is that they’ve all lost their own worlds and they’ve got to save this world no matter what. So at times that will put them often at odds with the Avengers. They aren’t always going to [do] the thing that you think is the right thing. And that quite frankly as the series goes on will lead to some of them questioning if they’re doing things the right way and others steadfastly believing that they are and that will lead to inner conflicts and everything else. The only ‘A’ in the title is in the word ‘squad’ but it’s an Avengers book that doesn’t have the Avengers as prominently in it so as a result I’m definitely making a point of making this a vital book that fits within the Avengers family and the Marvel Universe so I think that people might be surprised by that—that it isn’t one of those off the sideline ancillary books but it’s definitely a book in the heart of the Avengers universe."

This Nighthawk sucks, is basically Batman. Real Nighthawk can fly and is super strong at night, that's the point.

Squadron Supreme is basically Justice League,Wouldn't it of been awesome if Marvel could of squeezed out a Squadron Supreme movie before Justice league Part 1? Even though The Squadron supreme came out after Justice league.

They don't need to clone the JL when they could give us the Annihilators and leave the JL in the dust .

I'm a very big fan of the Supreme Power comics, all of them! I'll be getting this series. It would be cool if the Squadron showed up in an Avengers film down the line!

Gotta wonder if this is something that they could be considering for the Marvel Cinematic Universe at some point.

So, they will largely be the foils for the Avengers. They are all obviously the most expendable characters on the new Marvel roster. So, I wouldn't expect all of them to make it a year.

I am disappointed. This new team doesn't really interest me. They are cheap knock-offs of DCs big heroes. Now they will become a team which is at odds with the new Avengers on a regular basis. That sounds dumb. Marvel has no shortage of great villains and these are who they choose to give a book to? The members of this team will be some of Marvel's new anti-heroes and possibly villains. The odds of Hyperion becoming an evil version of Superman and a villain are huge. It is too predictable.

I brought the 12 issue series way back in the 80's, because it was a Justice League rip off and I found it really good. I am glad that they are bring the the whole team back into the new Marvel Universe. Now I think that this team will be more like the DC's Authority than anything else.

I guess they'll profit from the clueless who'll confuse them for Suicide Squad when that movie hits.
