I actually think this could be a good move for the character. A little lame? Yes. But maybe, just maybe they are slowly working on bringing Peter and Mary Jane back together. Her now having spider powers should be a big incentive for Peter. She can now relate to him in the ultimate way.

Her power activated a couple issues bacK she was the last new Yorkers to get them, I think because after a sertain time of exposure to the virus turns you into a giant spider so I'm guessing she's the last one rogue just so Pete can swing with her and realize they need each other.
