Taking charge of Amazing Spider-Man is no easy task for any writer. It's Marvel Comics' most popular title with a legion of passionate fans who have certain expectations for the web-slinger on the page.
Zeb Wells and John Romita Jr. took the reins of the series in 2022 and, along with several guest artists, have delivered more than 50 issues as we write this.
Marvel Comics stepped in and made major changes to previous writer Nick Spencer's plans for Amazing Spider-Man, undoing what looked like the restoration of Peter Parker's marriage to Mary Jane Watson. In Wells' run, MJ was left stranded in the future and came back with a new boyfriend and two children, ending any hope of her and the web-slinger reigniting their lost romance.
Other noteworthy stories have included Spidey's rivalry with Tombstone, the Hobgoblin's return, Peter working alongside Norman Osborn at Oscorp, Ben Reilly's transformation into the villainous Chasm, the death of Ms. Marvel, a Gang War, and most recently, Spider-Man's transformation into Spider-Goblin.
Today, Marvel Comics has confirmed Wells and Romita Jr.'s Amazing Spider-Man run will end later this year.
"Tombstone's revenge! Spanning multiple issues, Spidey’s most brutal battle begins in Amazing Spider-Man #58," reads a brief press release sent to us this morning. "Hitting stands in September, the visceral issue will kick off the climactic final arc of Zeb Wells and John Romita Jr.’s epic run!"
Even if this arc is on the longer side, chances are it will wrap up by December. This also means a new creative team will be in charge when Amazing Spider-Man #1000 rolls around roughly two or three years from now.
"There's no better way to explore and test Peter's humor and resolve than by throwing the kitchen sink at him," Wells previously said. "His quips work best when they're a distraction from the tougher things happening in his life. I didn't want to lose the humor, but I wanted to juxtapose it with some darkness."
"When you work with JRJR, you are working with someone who has complete mastery over his craft," he added. "There is nothing you can write that he can't do—and he SELLS it. I am enjoying every second of it, because I will never have it this good again."
Who do you think should be Amazing Spider-Man's next creative team?
