Marvel Comics Reveals That New GHOST RIDER In FINAL VENGEANCE Series Will Be A Supervillain

Last year, Marvel announced plans for Ghost Rider: Final Vengeance, a series putting the spotlight on a new version of the character. Now, it's been confirmed this Spirit of Vengeance will be a villain!

It's a new year and almost time for a new Ghost Rider. Continuing his acclaimed work on the character, writer Benjamin Percy will team up with artist Danny Kim to introduce an all-new version of the character in this March's Ghost Rider: Final Vengeance #1

The series will see the Spirit of Vengeance turn down a dark road as it abandons Johnny Blaze and possesses a powerful Marvel supervillain instead. This promises to be a very different chapter for the iconic flamehead and like other highly-anticipated launches, it'll stand out in comic shops with a special Foil Variant Cover (it's like we're in the 90s all over again).

You can see the piece by artist Benjamin Su below, but who is this mysterious new Ghost Rider?

Well, we won't have to wait until March to find out. Marvel Comics has promised a special announcement is coming "very soon,"  so it's likely a matter of days - or weeks at most - before their identity is shared with the world. There's no real point even speculating before then as the publisher could have chosen a big-name baddie or an obscure villain who will get a fresh lick of paint. Either way, we're intrigued.

Earlier this year, Percy told Marvel.com about growing up as a fan of the iconic supernatural character.

"I moved all over as a kid, and I was often living in rural areas, so I rarely had a comic book shop I could visit with any regularity," he said. "But when I did get to a store, I’d be pulling back issues of Ghost Rider from the dusty bins. And at garage sales and convenience stores, I was always drawn to the horror titles. That flaming skull is the coolest design in comics."

As for his approach to mixing superheroes with horror, Percy added, "My brain is hard-wired for horror. I probably rented as many horror VHS tapes as a kid as I ate grilled cheese sandwiches, so it’s just part of my creative DNA. No matter what I’m writing - take a look at Wolverine (2020) and X-Force (2019) - it bends toward the upsetting, the dreadful, the uncanny."

The first Ghost Rider was stunt motorcyclist Johnny Blaze, who, to save the life of his foster father, agrees to give his soul to "Satan" (later revealed to be Mephisto). When he senses evil, Blaze finds his flesh consumed by hellfire, causing his head to become a flaming skull. He rides a fiery motorcycle and wields blasts of hellfire from his body, usually from his skeletal hands.

Danny Ketch became the new Ghost Rider after his sister was injured by ninja gangsters. He gained his powers after coming into contact with a motorcycle that contained the essence of a Spirit of Vengeance and later learned that Johnny is his long-lost sibling. Years later, Robbie Reyes inherited the mantle but ditched the bike for a muscle car.

It would be cool if it was one of Spidey's loser Villains who becomes the next host. I love the ideas of lame villains getting a glow up

@KaptainKhaos - I think it needs to be a villain with powers already. It would be pretty interesting if they had Mister Negative be the host. With his power set already? What would he do?

@KaptainKhaos - We could write our Big Wheel / Ghost Rider fan fic while sipping some tasty brews. I was joking before, but the more I think about it the more it works.

And I'm the one who likes that goofy campy movie. Howard FTW!!!

@DocSpock - Right there with you.

As a kid/early teen that movie messed with my head. During Howard the Duck I was cheering, laughing, getting erections during Howard's seducing, and flat-out terrified with the dude with the long tung.

@DocSpock - I went to the cinema to watch that. At the time we only had Superman movies, so I needed anything Marvel.

last good reads for me were the original young avengers series and Aquaman new 52 series with all the glorious ivan reis artwork. Wouldn't mind a different take on ghosty as long as it's not something they stick with long term.

Always felt that Ghost Rider should be portrayed more as a villain anyway, as should Punisher. They want to make everyone an antihero no a days. Villains don’t have to be evil, they just aren’t good guys.

There’s more than one way to skin a cat

Anyway, taking an actual villain and giving him the power of Vengeance is cool, interested to see who was chosen

@MuadDib - well said. Antiheroes are just hot commodity right now I guess, so I don't really see them go back to villain anytime soon

Ever since that comic store guy pointed out every comic scribe writes from the angle of pulling from themselves, I can't read quotes anymore without noticing it either.

Anyway, Ghost Rider as a straightup villain is actually pretty cool. Just a matter of time I suplose. Also, I bet ten points of internet bragging rights it's Norman Osborn.

Taylor Swift. It's gotta be Taylor Swift. I mean no one who makes that much money in one year is NOT a supervillain (see: Bezos, Zuckerberg, Musk, and the entire cast of "Friends" in the 90s). And look at what she's done to poor Travis Kelce. He's completely f**ked (and not in a good way). With her hordes of parademonic tween "Swifties", she's nigh unstoppable. I shudder to think of what would happen to Travs-Travs if he *shudder shudder* forgot her birthday. Or, God forbid, break up with her (I don't know for sure, but I think it would be something like the scene in "Wickerman" with Cage and the bees, but with Travis shouting "No! Not the Swiftees!!!!".

And in case there's any doubt, she has a new single coming out called "I am Legion" (don't bother searching for it - you can only currently find it on the Dark Swifty Web and trust me, you DON'T want to go there *shudder shudder*).
