Marvel's Original UNCANNY AVENGERS Roster Almost Included Fantomex And A Resurrected Fan-Favorite

With so much upheaval in the world right now, writer Rick Remender has been bringing some joy to the lives of comic book fans on social media by sharing many of his rejected Marvel Comics pitches in a bid to show us what might have been. This time, he's revealed some of the characters he was hoping to use in the Uncanny Avengers series.

While the line-up we got was pretty impressive (Captain America, Havok, Thor, Wolverine, Sunfire, Wonder Man, Rogue, The Wasp, and Scarlet Witch), he originally had a much different idea.

As you can see below, he originally planned on using Captain America, Scarlet Witch, Wolverine, Storm, Thor, and Uncanny Avengers members Psylocke and Fantomex. However, the biggest reveal here is the inclusion of Captain Mar-Vell, a character who has been dead in the comic books for decades now.

His return would have been huge news, and undoubtedly changed the Marvel Universe as we know it.

Remender adds that he planned on including Doctor Voodoo at one point too, but that couldn't happen because he'd recently been killed off. Uncanny Avengers was a fun title, and the title's line-up helped make it compelling reading each month. It's definitely a shame we didn't see some of these heroes join them, though!

What do you guys think?

I miss the original Mar-Vell. Maybe it should be only Uncle Ben and Mar-Vell stay dead.

@RolandD - and both are basically forgotten by the mcu.

@Origame - It’s Carol and Uncle Tony and don’t you forget it.

@RolandD - sorry sorry sorry. Of course. The holy trinity are carol, tony, and the holy feige. All worship carol and tony died for our sins.

@RolandD - comic characters should stay dead no point killing them off if you know they somehow return from how many times did Jean grey die I lost count it’s always super hero parent that stay dead but not hero’s them self and villain watcher is still dead as useless he was apocalypse died few times to be return.

Comic companies make costumes try realistic in books but where is real world if no one stays dead all it is fantasy with no reality involved

I enjoyed the title as is, but this certainly would have been interesting.
I hope Mar-Vell stays dead though

@JoshWilding
You might wanna edit that roster on the 1st line up. It was Sunfire and not Sunspot

I enjoyed this 1st Uncanny Avengers run. Didn't really like Sunfire on the team and don't remember any purpose he served other than being a mutant on the Unity Squad (maybe I should read run again). They could have probably had one these others in his place.

I hate how homogenous the Marvel Universe has become thanks to the division of film rights.

@Chewtoy - I haven't read many modern books, but in general I like when worlds collide. Beast on the original X-men was pretty bland, but really came to life when he got transplanted to the Avengers. Same with Carol (going the other way). And it's always interesting to watch the Fantastic Four lineup get shaken up with a Medusa or an Ant-Man or something.

They can go overboard, sure, but having teams that function more like a singles mixer means there's the opportunity for flagging characters to find a new tone, a new group dynamic, or just some new spark that was missing in their old books.

Storm and thor on the same team

I'd feel bad for any water based villain

@Vigor - from recent Thor's runs to Storm actually being Omega level .... i'd feel bad for most unless they're above sky-father levels , and even that's a stretch with Thor's recent feats ....

@GodHercules20 - Oh man, i feel the complete opposite. Interested in looking further though - got a good point of refernece - good story, etc?

@GodHercules20 - He really stole the show from Deadpool in Uncanny X-Force.

@soberchimera - that was because of Remender; so the guy clearly had soft spot for him. i personally think he's the dumbest character. his powerset makes no sense at all and his backstory is basically just "what if wolverine hadnt lost his memory"

but that's just my opinion.

aside from the weird World stuff - which could've been a cool idea except so many writers used that to have fantomex have all these deus ex machina powers

I used to really like Captain Mar-Vell, one of my favorites, even though he died the year before I was born, and I always wanted him to be brought back. But they finally figured out Carol Danvers after decades of neglect and at this point she has far surpassed his amount of stories and now his importance to the Marvel Universe so I’m glad the never brought him back, now she has become a Hal Jordan or Barry Allen, completely supplanting a predecessor.

@TheUnworthyThor - Eh, pretty sure Civil War II killed her credibility.
TheUnworthyThor
TheUnworthyThor - 4/2/2020, 5:46 PM
@soberchimera - One storyline can’t kill a character or Barry and Hal would have been dead several times over in the eyes of fans and the Kelly Thompson run since then as been generally well received.
Spock0Clock
Spock0Clock - 4/3/2020, 2:00 AM
@soberchimera - Civil War II killed Carol's credibility just as much as Civil War I killed Tony's.
BruceParker
BruceParker - 4/4/2020, 2:13 AM
@soberchimera - I agree, but all would be forgotten if someone would pen an epic, and memorable, story arc for Captain Marvel. Still waiting though....
soberchimera
soberchimera - 4/4/2020, 5:46 PM
@Spock0Clock - Civil War DID kill Tony's credibility for awhile, or at least Mark Millar's since he had Tony act completely out of character. And besides Carol Danvers has not earned as reputable a place in the Marvel Universe as Iron Man.

My dream line-up for an X-Force movie would include Fantomex.

For me ideally it would be: Cable, Domino, Warpath, Boom Boom, Shatterstar, Psylocke, Fantomex and Deadpool.

I liked the actual line up. Rogue was 'eh.. but it was kinda cool to get her mixing it up w/Wanda, so it was alright. And I like how they added in Sunfire. He doesn't get the credit he deserves - and most of all, I LOVED their use of Havok, and how they played it off of the previous X-story. Cap taking the backseat, to promote mutants, and a Good Summers bro. Psylocke could have been kinda cool, and Storm is my second favorite all-time mutant, so I'm always down to see her in there. Voodoo would have been cool, to get some mystical mix in there. Sooo glad they didn't use that Fantom-X guy though - he's pretty lame. And MarVell... nah...

You kids here don't have a clue. Mar-Vell was a badass. If they bring him back, perhaps we might get a proper Captain Marvel rather than the trash we got. With the history he had with Thanos, I'm shocked we didn't get him earlier. IF we can't have Mar-Vell, I at least hope they do justice with Moonknight.
