Another year has come and gone and without a shadow of doubt we will still choose the Cinema as a sanctuary for escapism from modern life. You’ve admitted to yourself that your job sucks, every news about Brexit gets increasingly annoying and that an orange alien could bring about the end of the world through a nuclear holocaust. Quite possibly, none of those things apply to your life. I'm just projecting my own concerns.
Regardless, all is well. We can still afford to pay for a cinema ticket with an arm and leg and stare and a giant rectangle for over 2 hours and pretend everything is alright. But the movie has to be good first.
You visit this website often, so I assume you’ve seen loads of movies in 2017. So have I. And I know you’re dying to know some random guy's opinions of what is the best movies from 2017. I never thought there would be a time in my life when I would be able to watch a much comicbookmovies in a span of a year. Just an observation.
I’m Olu from OJFOODMACHINE and this is my 11 best movies of 2017. In no particular order this is my list.
Warners brothers will never stop making batman movies until you get tired of him, the success of the lego movie has inspired to studio to play it safe again and shove batman down our eyeballs. This obvious, shameless, uninspired cash grab should have failed but dammit, I liked it.
10. Atomic Blonde
Action movie based on a graphic novel character. Of course. That action scene was very good but it was not one take, it was made to look like one take. Just watch it again. The movie juggles too many plot threads but keeps things interesting with the neon set pieces and action scenes.
An action adventure, romance movie based on a graphic novel character. Why not. That wonder woman theme will never get old. Wonder Woman takes a classic well known comicbook character and gets them right. Wonder Woman is inspiring, funny and full of heart. DC and Warner Bros, no more depressing heroes…please.
Thriller, comedy, sci fi. I don’t care what genre it is. Get out is smart movie with well crafted social commentary. It doesn’t spend too much time preaching to its audience so much as it engages conversation.
07. Spider Homecoming
Action Adventure movie based on a comicbook character. Sure. Spiderman Homecoming is Ferris Bueller’s day off set in the marvel universe. It is fun. Full of energy and has a villain that is interesting enough to see again.
Edgar Wright’s colour coded, sonically charged flick is a pleasure to watch. It is unique, and a breath of fresh air. Baby Driver is worth seeing at least twice.
05. Guardians of the galaxy 2
The GoG is the second round of an intergalactic action adventure based on comicbook characters. GoG is interesting is interesting enough to keep us glued to us seats even if it is not as good as the first one
This is a passable Christmas flick that surprised me. Mainly because I never saw the first one. I laughed at this movie a couple of times. Also, I didn’t pay for the ticket so I enjoyed it more that I probably should have.
Action Drama movie Based on a comicbook character. This movie was the dark knight of the wolverine franchise. It was serious, it was dark, it was funny everything that it true about this character’s mythology so it worked.
02. Murder on the Orient Express
Full disclosure I love Agatha Christie’s Poirot on the Hallmark channel. I grew up on it. I loved David Suchet’s take on the character and he is still my favourite. I liked this movie a lot. I like this type of stuff even after learning Agatha Christie was a little bit racist
This is the hangover movie for 2017. It nearly lost me with the slap stick comedy in first 20 mins but the rest of it had me engaged. This movie is conscious and self affirming. I hope no one tries to make a sequel because that would be unnecessary
And that's it. I would love to know your thoughts. Hopefully 2018 would be able to bless us with some gems.
