Superhero films used to be the laughing stock of Hollywood. But with the success of Spider-Man and X-Men, "name" actors are seeking out superhero film roles, says Marvel Studios exec Avi Arad.
"What really appeals to these actors is not the tights," Arad told the New York Post.
"The costumes are alter-egos and they present ultimate role-playing opportunity. We have interesting, vulnerable characters - their superpowers do nothing but complicate their lives - which allows these guys to really show off their acting ability," he said.
Adding to the film’s appeal are talented directors like Sam Raimi (Spider-Man) and Ang Lee (Hulk), Arad added. "It's pretty intoxicating to think an actor can take the mantle of a comic book that's been around for 40 or 50 years and bring it to life in a way that's respected and brings on sequels," Arad says.
"Besides, they all look pretty good in the costumes."
