The first trailer for Warner Bros. and New Line's upcoming adaptation of Ollie Masters and Ming Doyle's 2014 DC Vertigo miniseries The Kitchen has been released. The film marks the directorial debut of Straight Outta Compton writer Andrea Berloff.

The Kitchen stars Melissa McCarthy, Tiffany Haddish and Elisabeth Moss as three mob wives in Hell’s Kitchen in the 1970s who take over the city's criminal empire when their husbands are sent down by the FBI.

Though McCarthy and Haddish' involvement might suggest a comedic tone, this big-screen take is described as a "gritty drama," and, a couple of gags aside, the trailer definitely seems to support that.

The Kitchen also stars Domhnall Gleeson, James Badge Dale, Common, Bill Camp and Annabella Sciorra, and is set for release on 20th September.

Looks like Widows if it was from a weaker film-maker than Steve McQueen.

That said, this just reminded me of how good Melissa McCarthy was in Can You Ever Forgive Me with Richard E. Grant, so hopefully she continues this route of dramatic roles as opposed to more low-brow comedies.

@tmp3

Widows was a lower tier McQueen flick (lower tier McQueen is still better than most). Great performances, but man it was pretty boring and the twist had me smh 🤦🏼‍♂️

Glad I saw it but it was very disappointing to me. This movie actually looks better than I thought it would? Weird.

Is Haddish married to an Irish guy here because I find it hard to believe an IRISH MOB GUY IN 1970S NYC would marry a black chick.

I'm black and I would be surprised by that in 2019 too haha.

@BlackBeltJones - yea that's odd especially those times and him being in the Mob

@knocturnalzen10 - I mean....lets be real. He'd be more likely to harass her back then.

@BlackBeltJones - To be fair, the idea that a criminal organization's chain of command would somehow make the wife the next in charge already tosses believability to the side.

Might as well get some name recognition and free politic points for the movie.

@Reeds2Much - "...the idea that a criminal organization's chain of command would somehow make the wife the next in charge already tosses believability to the side."

And you're right. I guess after stretching believability with one thing you either keep running with it or you lean into believability for everything else just to support the already gritty, realistic tone of the project as a whole. Kind of take liberties with as little as you can to reinforce how realistic this world is supposed to appear.

@BlackBeltJones - Yep, in fact I think the dude who played "Savin" in Iron Man 3 is her husband in this movie.

James Badge Dale.

@BlackBeltJones - I hope they do deal with the racial aspect of it. It seems like it might with Haddish's comment on them not wanting her in the family.

@BlackBeltJones - You know not EVERY Irish person isn't a racist prick right? Even back in the 70's you would have SOME that didn't cater to the b.s. of the majority.

@TRexx21 - I know and no disrespect. It is a reach though when considering the climate of the time is all I am saying.

Not even that it is racist, but just extremely taboo. The original comic didn't have this, but I get why they casted differently.

@BlackBeltJones - I hear you, but even in the 70's you had plenty of interracial couples...they were just harassed instead of being put in Cheerio commercials back then. I'm sure they're going to touch on the difficulties of it and there's going to be some racist comments made, still doesn't make it a "reach" though.
GhostDog
GhostDog - 5/30/2019, 8:59 AM
@TRexx21 - I hope they do touch on that.

@BlackBeltJones - It would be a total miss if they don't...that and the fact that it's women trying to take over back in that time frame as well, it's gonna hit all the marks lol.

@TRexx21 - The Irish mob is known to be very racist.
MexCowboyNation
MexCowboyNation - 5/30/2019, 9:02 AM
@TRexx21 - Please don't try to deny this fact.
TRexx21
TRexx21 - 5/30/2019, 9:04 AM
@MexCowboyNation - Not denying anything, I just know that in group of 10 people at least 1 is going to think differently...hell in a group of 5 someone will go against the grain...it's human nature to have someone who doesn't do what everyone else is doing...even in the mob.
TRexx21
TRexx21 - 5/30/2019, 9:07 AM
@MexCowboyNation - I'm pretty sure they're going to deal with tons of racism in the movie, still doesn't mean it's totally impossible for this relationship to have existed back then.

McGarthy drops and gains weight so fast like Jonah hill

@knocturnalzen10 - Jonah Hill gains and loses weight in between projects, it's gotta be unhealthy at this point. He was really sickly looking in Maniac.

@tmp3 - very much so .... i work out frequently so i've learned a lot of things over the years... that's one big no/no for your body wise unfortunately . the drastic changes mess a lot things up . McGarthy actually looks great at this weight imo
