DEADPOOL 3 Director Shawn Levy Describes The Upcoming Threequel As An "R-Rated Bloodbath"

Deadpool 3 director Shawn Levy talks more about his plans for the Marvel Studios threequel, saying both Wade Wilson and Wolverine will receive an equal share of the spotlight in this "R-rated bloodbath."

Deadpool 3 will be Marvel Studios' first R-rated movie, a surprise, but also a necessity when it comes to a character like Ryan Reynolds' Merc with the Mouth.

He'll be joined by Hugh Jackman's Wolverine in a threequel we've recently heard is going to be a lead-in to Avengers: Secret Wars. That suggests both characters will remain part of the MCU moving forward, news which has been welcomed by fans.

During a recent interview with Collider, Deadpool 3 director Shawn Levy described the movie as an "R-rated bloodbath" and said it will be a "two-hander" which gives both Deadpool and Wolverine an equal share of the spotlight.

"You have two major movie stars together in a movie playing their most iconic signature roles - that is director heaven," Levy said. "So the story, the tone, the movie itself leans into that gift of having Deadpool and Wolverine co-starring in a movie for the first time. So, we're definitely not running away from that."

In a separate interview with Deadline, the filmmaker talked more about his approach to the franchise, suggesting he's not looking to break the mould.

"Deadpool 1 is, to me, a perfect movie, and so I was not going to mess with the DNA of that franchise," Levy explains. "Our movie is raw, audacious, very much R-rated. We went to great lengths to not shoot it on sound stages with digital environments. The internet has proven that by revealing pictures of our shoot. Thank you, internet!"

"But we wanted something that felt grounded [and] real, but you put Hugh Jackman in his most iconic character alongside Ryan Reynolds in his most iconic character...I would say it's more a descendant of Midnight Run, and 48 Hours, and Planes, Trains and Automobiles than it is a descendant of Airplane!"

All signs point to Levy being the right person to deliver a team-up we've spent years waiting for. However, as Deadpool 3 is also going to be a key chapter in the ongoing Multiverse Saga, the director will have more than just a team-up to juggle.

Alongside Reynolds and Jackman, Deadpool franchise vets Karan Soni (Dopinder), Leslie Uggams (Blind Al), Morena Baccarin (Vanessa), Stefan Kapicic (Colossus), Brianna Hildebrand (Negasonic Teenage Warhead), Shioli Kutsuna (Yukio), and Rob Delaney (Peter) are all set to return in this threequel.

Emma Corrin is expected to play Cassandra Nova, while Matthew Macfadyen will likely take on the role of a TVA agent named Paradox. It's also been confirmed that Jennifer Garner will reprise her role as Elektra, with Liev Schreiber, James Marsden, Patrick Stewart, and Ian McKellen among the many names rumoured to appear.

Deadpool 3 is currently set to be released in theaters on May 3, 2024.

Fox coming in to save the MCU. lol Times have changed.

@TheRationalNerd - Fox CHARACTERS, let's be clear. It's not like they were prime quality when it comes to Marvel properties as well.

@Fogs - X1, X2, First Class, DOFP, Logan, and Deadpool are better and more iconic than the majority of Marvel content released since Endgame. And even NWH relied on Sony nostalgia lol

@YouCray04 - Agreed. I meant their last entries were not stellar, unfortunately.

@YouCray04 - Post Endgame the only 2 movies I'd say were really good are NWH and Guardians 3. Shang-Chi, Black Widow and Black Panther 2 were good. The rest... well let's leave at that.

@TheRationalNerd - Fox doesn't exist any more. (The film studio.) Fox isn't doing anything. Marvel Studios opted to make this film and use the "Multiverse" theme of this saga to make sense of it. Marvel Studios is also giving us a comic accurate Wolverine suit for the first time because Fox had the character for over two decades and squandered that completely.

That said, I still have mixed feelings about how this film is going to affect the MCU.

@YouCray04 - But Fox-Men is a failed franchise altogether. The handful of films you just mentioned is being compared to the minority of films the MCU has made that weren't as widely accepted. This is just truly not an "apples to apples" comparison. Not to mention, the "since Endgame" argument is quite a bit skewed. There are plenty of projects "post Endgame" that are better than some "pre Endgame" projects. People just have irrational biases like everything now is supposed to stack up to the mega climax of Infinity War and Endgame. But no one wants to have the sober conversation about Thor 2 being awful. Or Hulk being mostly forgettable. Or Iron Man 2 and 3 being meh. Or Captain Marvel being a little underwhelming. Or AM2 not meeting expectations.

I'll be the first to admit Thor 4 and AM3 dropped the ball. But this whole notion that the Multiverse Saga is some fall from grace that the Infinity Saga was, is just honestly not looking at all things considered.

Notice the praise Levy gave for D1 but nothing for it’s inferior sequel lol

I will say that it’s refreshing to hear him talk about shooting on actual locations. MCU has turned into Spy Kids at this point with it’s entirely greem screen locations which look even worse since they’re overworking their vfx to the bone over last minute changes.

@TheLobster - Disney only cares about DEI, now back to work you got damn slaves! Theres money to be made from exploiting ppls pronouns and race

@TheLobster - Ant Man 3 was the worst offender when it comes to this. Of course it's difficult to show an another dimension without CGI but they could've done better.

@TheLobster -

That was one of my biggest complaints about the DCEU. Everything feels like a soundstage.

Now the MCU has been doing that and it feels cheap.😑

I know the pandemic made them shift to that but god-damn they need to stop and it looks like they will. Atleast with this project 💪

@Archgoat - the thing too is that they took VFX artists off Quantumania to work on Wakanda Forever which is insane given how vfx heavy the former is by comparison.

@AmazingFILMporg - I do agree with some of the DCU films but I still think Snyder’s films (not counting Josstice League) had better CGI work because say what you want about ZS (this site has no issue doing just that lol) but at least he doesn’t change his mind at the 11th hour.

[frick]ing Quantumania changed their ending like less than a month before it hit theaters which only puts pressure on vfx to make said changes at no additional pay either smh

The one DCEU film that felt real was MOS. Actual locations and green screen when needed.

The last MCU project that felt real was probably falcon and the winter soldier 🤔

Idk but every major studio needs to stop that trend 😬

@AmazingFILMporg - totally agree. I really hope with vfx artists unionizing that the abuse will stop from studios and therefor quality vfx will actually be produced.

It's going to be absolute garbage if the only thing this has going for it is violence and deaths again, like Multiverse of Madness.
TheLobster
TheLobster - 9/11/2023, 11:20 AM
@Scarilian - Multiverse isn’t absolute garbage though? At least not by comparison to the rest of Phase 4 and 5 lol

@TheLobster -
It was a complete disaster:

Either way, my comparrison was primarily how tons of deaths happened in Multiverse of Madness including of fan favorite characters and it all felt empty, meaningless and kinda disrespectful as it's Disney playing with characters the fans want to see and then portraying them as being [frick]ing incompetent stupid idiots who get slaughtered.

Deadpool 3 will no doubt do the same, it'll probably adapt 'Deadpool kills the Marvel Universe' only it'll be focused around the Fox-Verse so we'll see deaths of all the characters people liked from the Fox-Verse.

"I would say it's more a descendant of Midnight Run, and 48 Hours, and Planes, Trains and Automobiles than it is a descendant of Airplane!"

Now that sounds more like what Reynolds originally envisioned than the ludicrous Dark Phoenix version 3 rumor that's been going around (albeit with some other red-haired, red-wearing character).

"In case that’s not enough, before Disney bought Fox, Deadpool 3 was gonna be a road trip between Deadpool and Logan. Rashomon style. For real."
