Last night, Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman broke the internet with an announcement confirming that the latter will reprise the role of Wolverine in Deadpool 3. The actor was thought to have retired from the role after 2017's Logan, but Marvel Studios was clearly able to convince him to don those claws one final time for the 2024 movie.
We have to assume the threequel will at least begin in Fox's X-Men Universe, likely ending with Wade Wilson in the MCU thanks to all that ongoing Multiversal madness.
Beyond that, we don't really know what to expect. However, before Reynolds was able to convince Jackman to join him in Deadpool 3, he may have revealed what the plan for the clawed mutant and his Merc with the Mouth is. Promoting Bell Let's Talk's mental health awareness campaign last year, the actor shared the movie's plot prior to the Disney/Fox merger.
"It’s critical to have open, honest and healthy discussions around mental health. By retweeting #BellLetsTalk you can make a difference," Reynolds said at the time. "In case that’s not enough, before Disney bought Fox, Deadpool 3 was gonna be a road trip between Deadpool and Logan. Rashomon style. For real."
Reynolds later made it clear that he wasn't kidding around, and while we have to believe the story has evolved and changed with Marvel Studios in charge, we wouldn't be surprised if the road trip side of things remained. Perhaps it will now just be a road trip through the Multiverse?
If nothing else, Deadpool 3 is surely going to feature some huge cameos both from Fox's X-Men Universe and the MCU. Fans are already hoping that the plan is for Jackman to return as Wolverine in Avengers: Secret Wars, but if this is it for him, we couldn't be happier that it involves the team-up fans have been dreaming about for years now.
Deadpool 3 is set to be released in theaters on September 6, 2024.
