Academy Award winner Emma Stone stars in Disney's Cruella, the studio's latest live-action feature based on one of its animated classics (in this case, 101 Dalmatians).
It's set to follow the rebellious early days of one of cinemas most notorious, and notoriously fashionable, villains, the legendary Cruella de Vil. Set in 1970s London amidst the punk rock revolution, the movie focuses on a young grifter named Estella, a clever and creative girl determined to make a name for herself with her designs. She befriends a pair of young thieves who appreciate her appetite for mischief, and together they are able to build a life for themselves on the London streets.
One day, Estella’s flair for fashion catches the eye of the Baroness von Hellman, a fashion legend who is devastatingly chic and terrifyingly haute, played by two-time Oscar winner Emma Thompson. But their relationship sets in motion a course of events and revelations that will cause Estella to embrace her wicked side and become the raucous, fashionable and revenge-bent Cruella.
This trailer delivers some fun visuals, and points to Cruella being an entertaining watch. It certainly doesn't look like the iconic villain is going to be portrayed in a sympathetic light (unlike, say, Maleficent), so the movie might need to rely heavily on Stone's charisma to get viewers invested.
It's also worth noting that a release date has now been set for May 28th...with no clarification on whether Cruella will debut in theaters, on Disney+, or both. All we know for now is that it's "releasing" that day, so keep checking back, as we'll hopefully have an update for you soon.
