Well it seems we are getting a live action adaptation of Sleeping Beauty from Disney..kinda. As you can tell from the title this will focus more on the villain of the piece, the wicked Maleficent - and we may well see the gorgeous Angelina Jolie play the part.

From Deadline..

Disney has tapped Robert Stromberg to make his feature directorial debut on Maleficent, the Linda Woolverton-scripted revisionist take on the Sleeping Beauty fairy tale that is being constructed as a star vehicle for Angelina Jolie to play the villainess.

Stromberg has no directorial experience but he has acted as production designer on Avatar and Alice in Wonderland, and will again on Disney’s upcoming Oz The Great and Powerful. I'm sure Jolie needs no introduction! We also have two live action Snow White movies heading our way so there may well be a trend forming. Could the likes of Rapunzel and Cinderella be on the horizon? What say you folks, could you get on board with this?

Jolie would actually do really well as her I think. And Sleeping Beauty could be a good movie if they do it right.

Could be interesting I always thought Maleficent was the most evil and scary of the Disney villians.

That's pretty good casting right there that is.

Shot in the dark here, but how about Emma Watson? She can act pretty decent and she can pass for a 16 year old. And it'll pull in the Harry Potter fans to come see the movie, therefore......money.

She's been attached to this for some time, trying to get it to production. Having said that, I'm not totally sold on the idea. At least Tim Burton isn't involved!

@RorMachine- There is no popular actress who can fill that character's shoes. Remember, she Sleeping 'BEAUTY'.

IMO , the casting director's need to find an unknown actress with a gorgeous face. Not an easy task. If she's not absolutely beautiful, she'll never be able to sustain the role throughout the film.

HEADLOPPER...I AM HERE!!!

We have done it!
We should be uber proud right now!!!

Sleeping beauty should be played by the super gorgeous Tamsin Egerton!

Beyond perfect!

Tamsin is not very well known, at all...But, she is super gorgeous.

And, she was great in Camelot!
I think this could be a great break-out role for her...

BTW, Angelina Jolie is the perfect cast for the role of Maleficent.

They've got to make it edgy- PG-13 at least.
No stupid fairies.

The epic 'Knight in Shining Armor ' rescuing the damsel in distress sort of thing.

This is one of the few animated Disney movies which actually have a slightly edgy, adult theme to it.

Another would be 'Fantasia' believe it or not. At the end if you'll remember, there's this giant devil , and boobs and just an overall scary feel to it. Waayyyy ahead of it's time!

I always pictured Famke Janssen as Maleficent...

She has the same facial structure, voice, body...Everything.

But, Angelina is a great pick for her as well!
She is a great actress...LOVED her in "Salt"!

@tweeeeenkies3- We are kings...we shall rule!!!

Oh yeah, I remember you suggesting her. I'm on board with that!

Woooo, I'm stoked!

First ,I wake up this morning and find out the Miami Heat pulled off an overtime win against Atlanta, and now this!

It's been a good day!

@headlopper...We are pretty freakin' awesome!

We can see the future...We knew this day would come!
'Cause, we are amazing!

I am excited for this as well...
I think with a proper script, director, and cast, this will be great!!!

This made my night...Just saying.

Oh, and at the bottom when you asked "Could the likes of Rapunzel and Cinderella be on the horizon?"

I have to answer...There IS a Cinderella movie in the works...With Amanda Seyfried attached as Cinderella!

And, there is a Little Mermaid movie being made!

This could be a good take on the character, if it's done right. I just wish the masses would learn that these characters were not created by Disney, but by the Brothers Grimm.

Tweenkies, really? Hadn't heard that! Guess I need to be doin more research
headlopper
headlopper - 1/6/2012, 3:55 PM
@tweeeeenkies3- The right directer is key!

He'll control the tone and dynamic of the film, so he's the most important piece in the puzzle.

I suggest Del Toro, based upon his work in 'Pan's Labyrinth' and to a lesser degree 'Hellboy 2'.
Oarsis
Oarsis - 1/6/2012, 4:07 PM
@RorMachine...Yep!
There are a lot of websites talking about the current fairy tale movies in the works...The 2 I found that weren't posted on here were "Cinderella", with Amanda Seyfried....And "The Little Mermaid"...With Joe Wright directing, I believe.

@headlopper...There are many directors who could pull it off!
Del Toro is a good choice..."Pan's Labyrinth" was really good!
He could probably do it!
headlopper
headlopper - 1/6/2012, 4:21 PM
@CaptainProg- No dude, not this time. I get what you're saying and TOTALLY agree in principle, but this tale can truly be epic if made...well , 'epic-ly'!

mgeoff88 - 1/6/2012, 4:39 PM
Angelina Jolie is a great choice! I do find it odd that it's going to be a villain piece.

I know the main protagonist is in a sleep state for the duration of the story, but I figure if you're going the live-action route for a classic fairy tale, it should focus on the heroes, not the villains.

@CBArtist Well, it's kind of hard to when Disney is attached to so many of these kinds of movies. :)

@headlopper I agree. If we get that in live-action form -- epic.

I just hope they don't ruin Maleficent by giving her motivation for her evil. She doesn't do evil out of jealousy or greed, she is just evil and she likes being that way.

This movie could be good if done right.

BTW..Maleficent and the evil queen from Snow White look really similar. Does anyone know why this is? I'm very curious.

This could be awesome!

I can totally see Jolie as Maleficent! Little bit make up and she would be scary as hell in the role!
And hopefully they make her scary as hell!
Horror esque Sleeping Beauty movie would be great!

Henry Cavill would be good choice as the Prince Philip.

GUNSMITH@ Oh yeah that! I dont even count that crap so to me... the real Beauty and the Beast movie is still waiting to be made.
Until that comes i settle watching the tv-series and Disney´s film.

I remember Guillermo Del Toro saying that he was developing a movie version of it but it might take a while cause he has a busy schedule.
