First Look At Guy Ritchie's Live-Action ALADDIN Finally Reveals Will Smith's Genie

Guy Ritchie (King Arthur) is in charge of bringing Disney's live-action version of Aladdin to the big screen and now a first look at Aladdin, Jasmine, and Will Smith's Genie has been revealed...

At first glance, Sherlock Holmes director Guy Ritchie doesn't seem like the most natural fit for a live-action retelling of Disney's Aladdin but the studio has made some unexpected decisions along the way that have (mostly) paid off. Now, Entertainment Weekly has released a first look at the movie and we get to see Aladdin (Mena Massoud),  Jasmine (Naomi Scott), and Genie (Will Smith).

"Whenever you’re doing things that are iconic, it’s always terrifying," Smith says of the character before the magazine confirms that his appearance in Aladdin isn't 100% finished as of yet. "The question is always: Where was there meat left on the bone? Robin didn’t leave a lot of meat on the bone with the character."

"I think it’ll stand out as unique even in the Disney world," Smith adds. "There hasn’t been a lot of that hip-hop flavor in Disney history." Smith will have musical numbers in the movie and Ritchie promises a fresh take on Genie here. "I like the fact that our Genie has an ego and is a little bit vain and he cares about how he’s presented because he’s been doing this for a very long time."

In other news, the magazine reveals that Rajah will be part of proceedings while Nasim Pedrad is playing Dalia, Jasmine's handmaiden and best friend. Billy Magnussen, meanwhile, will play newly created Prince Anders of Skånland (one of her suitors).

What do you guys think of this first look at Aladdin? Share your thoughts in the usual place.

@Mattygrand - It's funny how people complain about things they don't understand. Being half Jordanian, I had been privy to the ORIGINAL Aladdin and Genie before Disney's version and I was confused when that cartoon came out and the genie was blue instead of brown.

As an adult, I understand the misappropriation of culture and why rich white people didn't want the genie to be portrayed as Arab - even though he is quite literally a Djinn.

Disney's Aladdin was wayyyyy better though! And one of my favorite movies. Now they hired the king of heists - Guy Richie - to do a heist movie (cave of wonders, anyone?) So I'm going to go into it with an open mind, hoping it will be it's own version, in it's own good way.

@LiteraryJoe - ah yes, but he's not brown, he's black! And the blue character is the most widely known and loved due to Robin Williams performance.

@Mattygrand - i personally like that the designs arent trying to match the animated movie. Jury's out on how much originality is in the rest but at least designs are unique.

@Mattygrand - Here's the thing. I was really hoping they WOULDN'T do a CGI blue genie, but this still looks bad.

@Mattygrand - Actually, on Will's social Media, he says he will be Blue and CGI. Thats just the Genie's human form when he's trying to blend in

@LiteraryJoe - Of course, Aladdin himself was originally Chinese (also set in China despite having many Muslim characters) and the story was only added to a translation of 1001 Arabian Nights by a French author who supposedly heard it from an Arabian storyteller and included it as an “extra” tale, although to the best of my knowledge nobody has ever uncovered an earlier recorded version of the tale.

So as cultural appropriations go, it’s a confusing one.
