SNOW WHITE: Disney's Live-Action Remake Looks Set For Not-So Magical $63M - $70M Domestic Box Office Debut

Disney’s live-action Snow White movie has hit long-range box office tracking, and the forecast is... not great.

According to Deadline, the movie is looking at a 3-day start of $63 million - $70 million, while other sources believe $65M at this point in time is more accurate.

While this wouldn't usually be seen as a disastrous opening (especially if overseas numbers are stronger), for this particular movie, it simply might not be good enough.

A recent Forbes article revealed that Snow White's budget had ballooned to a whopping $269.4 million by the end of 2023 (current reports put it at $250M), which puts a lot of pressure on the movie to become a massive box office success.

This is just an early estimate, but if those numbers don't go up as we draw closer to the film's March release, Disney could have a major flop on its hands.

This project has been plagued by controversy since the very beginning, when Game of Thrones actor Peter Dinklage - who has nothing to do with the movie - called the decision to remake the animated classic "backwards" during a podcast interview.

A Disney spokesperson released a statement shortly after:

“To avoid reinforcing stereotypes from the original animated film, we are taking a different approach with these seven characters and have been consulting with members of the dwarfism community. We look forward to sharing more as the film heads into production after a lengthy development period.”

The strange-looking CGI humanoid... creatures that greeted fans in the first official trailer did not exactly go over well, and star Rachel Zegler's comments about making what many deemed to be unnecessary or "woke" changes to the original did not endear her to fans of the animated classic.

Snow White is helmed by The Amazing Spider-Man director Marc Webb, and is expected to expand upon the 1937 animated classic's story. The movie will feature new songs by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul (La La Land and The Greatest Showman), and will also feature Wonder Woman star Gal Gadot as the Evil Queen.

The actors for most of the seven "dwarfs" have not been announced, but we do know that Martin Klebba, who has been in all the Pirates of the Caribbean movies, will play Grumpy. It's also been confirmed that the movie will include a younger take on Snow White, which suggests that we will get some kind of flashback scenes that will expand on the origin of the title character.

Snow White is scheduled to hit theaters next month. Do you plan on checking this one out on the big screen? Be sure to let us know in the comments section down below.

Somehow captain America's box office is good but not much more than this.....go figure

@AllsNotGood -
To be expected honestly.

Neither has had a good reception among audiences even from when they were first starting development. Casting choices for both have faced backlash and both have a political element that has driven away members of the audience either focused around the portrayals of characters or remarks from the actors/actresses. Both are releasing at a time when the brands are damaged and audiences are fed-up.

Captain America 4 for instance is likely going to be the third lowest overall final box office in the franchise, only surpassing Captain America: The First Avenger if unadjusted for inflation. I think there's a risk people will skip it because it's likely going to be irrelevant to the events of Avengers 5/6 other than establishing that Sam is the new Captain America, which people can already pick up from the end of Endgame. No point watching it to set-up the future as we're looking at a semi or full reboot after Secret Wars/Avengers Forever.

Snow White on its $240m-$269.4m reported budget is not going to break-even if the box office follows the trajectory set here as it'd need around $600m to break-even at minimum. I think people have soured on the live-action animated film aspect they have going.

@Scarilian - great response. But honestly, Disney never reports the true budgets of these films. I’ve read reports that it had ballooned to 300-350 million. Then factor another 150 million in marketing. This movie probably needs to hit like 750 million to break even. Just like Like little mermaid which caused Disney to lose a lot of $

Isnt that too high numbers for the 10,000th version of Snow White? :/

Looks just as uninspired and dead as most of their remake/remix stuff. Anyone hoping that the culture war discourse surrounding this will have any impact should remind themselves it's targetted to families with young children who don't care about that shit and are not online. Budget is crazy, but those numbers are kinda anticipated since it's not one of their big Renaissance movies. I'm sure Lilo & Stich gonna be enormous.

@WakandanQueen - the Disney live action remakes/reimaginings I have seen have been a mixed bag overall…

I think my favorite is still Favreau’s Jungle Book with my least probably being his Lion King actually.

What about you?.

@TheVisionary25 - Least favourite was Dumbo by a mile, Jungle Book by far the best and actualy better than the animation for me by a mile.

Then there are all the little if any added value ones that loose some of the magic but overall as good like Aladdin, Beauty and the beast sorts. Technicaly Lion King as almost an exact copy of the animation should be in that roughly as good bunch, for me looses something being more life like with expressions so get why some class it low on the list, not keen myself but wouldn't call it bad either.

Overall most, for me, I'm like why did they bother with almost all of them but get that live action appeals to differing crowds to animations so if they turned a profit not worried about them existing.

There are some everyone seems to agree were terrible like for instance Pinocchio, of those only bothered with Dumbo.

@Apophis71 - I haven’t seen Dumbo but I did think Aladdin and Beauty and The Beast were decent

Then there’s Mulan which I didn’t much care for and then Lion King which I just didn’t really connect to it

Haven’t seen Little Mermaid yet.

Honestly , not too surprising since there’s been little buzz I’ve seen for it so far and contrary to people’s beliefs on here has little to nothing to do with Rachel Zegler or the “controversies” surrounding her or the film…

However , the movie is still a bit over a month away since it comes out March 21st so the estimates could grow , lessen or stay the same once the marketing truly ramps up.

Anyway i think the movie looks just fine tbh as is though i have really liked the new song for Snow White so far!!.

With all the bad press this movie is getting and the backlash Rachel is getting I would say that is not bad numbers at all. I was expecting worse.

All of these Disney live action movies have been notably worse than the animated original and are not even a nice counterpart to the animated feature.
